BUY THIS CAMERA ONLY IF YOUR VERY SURE THAT YOUR PROJECT WILL BE A SUCCESS!!! OTHERWISE, JUST A WASTE OF MONEY! @TRE1275 Ive seen a movie that was shot entierly with the Nokia N9 (i think) camera.
@itsLauraLaugh we paid 17.5K but the package is now well in to 40 or 50k with lenses. this video was one of the first ones we ever shot and the res is really low but it. We have made back our money on it many times but with the advent of DSLR's you can get really pretty footage for a very low cost. Still this camera can do things DSLR's can't and vice-versa.
many ppl here think that the red camera is everything and the truth is a great filmmaker can make a movie with a flip phone. There are mini reds in development right now that will deliver the same resolutions for much, much cheaper in a few years. Unless your film has guaranteed theatrical distribution, you don't need to spend 30k buying or renting the red. You could have all the resolution in the world but that doesn't mean your project will be worth a shit.
@TRE1275 but still i dont care if steven spielberg directed it...i would never sit there and watch a movie shot on a flip phone..(unless they paid me)
i dont get it.. this camera is capable of going up to 4k rez , and this video is only 360p, why not render in higher quality such as 720p? or even 1080p
Superb video, Blare. I'm looking at renting this camera once I save up enough. (which will be years from now, lol). Hopefully I can bring my screenplay to life finally. And since we're (ALL us hungry directors) not execs in Hollywood who do nothing anymore but make remakes, sequels and prequeles, us smaller people can create REAL movies without having to spend millions on film, lab costs, and other useless expenses. Go REDONE!
god, there's something about the colors and the motion this camera produces, that always looks great. well it is like a 16,000 dollar camera so i guess you could expect it
@nuahsx 16,000 for just the body my friend... that means no EVF,no lcd monitor,no batteries,no battery cradle,no breakout boxes to make the plugs pluggable ha,no lense,no rod support system to support your lense, no matbox,no dove plate...just the body. ha your looking at like 50-60 thousand to get a decent red rig.
@TheNEWfilmfanatic99 In film, footage is shot at 24 frames per second. Although digital can replicate this look, it is not native on many digital cameras, so most shoot at 60 frames per second. That extra 36 frames makes it look a bit quicker.
thank you. I used to think that way for sure and on things like this I still do. the more one learns about directing the more they learn about subtleties and distance and POV etc... there is certainly a lifetime's worth of knowledge to gain. (most of which I don't have yet)
I would suggest the red because I own one and for some things you would need all the resolution and because it is inexpensive compared to any comparable camera and i can do the post for it on a laptop (most of it at least)
It looks like he took a FX1 and put it in it's Cineframe24 feature...
Not trying to rip or anything, But don't claim this is REDone footage where there are people out here really trying to gain some knowledge about the camera...
I mean you said it yourself your don't really know much about film.. So why would you go out and Spend $18,000 on a camera when your an amateur.
And get over over-saturating your footage.. It looks cheesy! Just a tip!
Uploading RED footage to YouTube is like bragging about your new CEO position at a garbage dump. Why waste your breath when it can't even be appreciated in such an environment?
@Psythik It's not like when someone replies to my comment I have to wait for a carrier pigeon to arrive to let me know. But don't worry, I don't pay attention to anything ever, either. Except for your replies.
The problem is it doesn't look like 35mm, it looks like what it is - video! I still can't see the attraction in trying to get rid of film, when it's vastly superior. While Speilberg feels the same way, we won't see the end in the near future.
I'm sure they'll solve those problems in the near future. Gradually, film will disappear. It's just so much cheaper to shoot on digital video and beam the film to theaters via satellite. No more reel cans, no more carrying film around the country..... life will be much easier.
The Red has a lot of flexibility, if properly used the raw footage can be made to look very much like film. I agree that this footage looks like video, may be it was shot to look like video.
it is tough to tell on you tube but i like the footage on both - nice concept. by the way I would like everyone to go see KNOWING and with the eye of an average viewer find any reason why the RED Camera does not deserve to be side by side with any film camera.
I would definitely be willing to believe that of all the 10's of thousands of HVX cameras sold someone has managed to shoot something better than I did during my first week with a brand new camera . congratulations.
Really though, I think most digital people would shoot on film if they could but it is just TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE. Whatever philosophical issues you have with video tape, we all want the same thing, really. A good looking picture. But to say you're video is silly...
In some ways yes - instant ability to edit, no grain to deal with, superior resolution depending on how much money you spend on scanning. In other ways no - slightly less dynamic latitude, a bias towards 5000K, issues dealing with something that isn't almost completely mechanical.
So people think, wow, a red-one camera, and now I can make the next movie. Yeah, sure...
Then they think, well I need a jib, or a dolly, or a rigging crew. Well we can outsource that *rolls eyes*. Yes, we can get all the cheap labour from China, and they will do the same. Lets have 20 red-cameras and show those ARRICAM made in Germany whose boss.
Arrogance in the digital community at it's best.....
jib, dolly, rigging crew, kino-flo, Joker Bug, outsource, such big words I don't know nothing about. i just figure i can pick up a picture takin machine and point it at whatever i see that's purtty. and yeah that's a great idea to hire people from China, I'll just dig a hole straight through and have 'em walk on over. OR.. I could spend nearly 80 hours a week studying, learning, trying to perfect my craft and producing whatever I can with what I can afford in an earnest attempt to make my
(pt2) visions, words and imaginings a reality in whatever format I may be able to pass them on to other people. Perhaps you're right though, everyone in the world should be elitist, hater, trolls who must rip on other people's efforts instead of spending time creating with whatever tools they have at their disposal. Please teach me the ways of squashing other people's attempts at artistic expression because they do not possess an official Arricam Camera, Tshirt and club membership certificate.
An idiot? For stating the truth? You digital guys are so cheap, you don't even know what makes a good movie. Listen, I'm going to setup a good set and throw rocks in a pond and get an academy award. I just can't wait!
I still believe the Red One is not a cinematography tool. It just doesn't have that looks and feel. It doesn't have the tonal range in different areas, especially in the highlight parts because it has something like 8 stops of latitude. I believe the ARRICAM has something like 14 stops. The halide crystals in film can pick up light differently than a CMOS based camera which scans line by line instead of light hitting the film plane developing the whole plane.
last time i checked the ARRICAM is a piece of metal that rotates something through it that actually records the data. Let's call that 'film.' ARRI doesn't make 'film' Kodak and Fuji do and this 'film' has an accepted dynamic latitude of around 12 stops. not 14. That's like saying Compact Flash cards have 14 stops of latitude (which is what the RED can record to.) Once again. The film makes the pictures, not the machine that makes it go round and round. nice try though.
So film makes the picture? Yeah, but you need a collimated beam of light to hit the film plane passing through shutter. Most film stocks have the same latitute range. So I refer it to the camera instead. I'm not stupid so you don't have to ply innocent. Infact, the Kodak Vision 3 film stock line has a superb tonal range in the shadow area with low grain. I only think the ARRI D-20, (Something you couldn't afford), could get this shadow range from what I've heard, since it's good in night scenes
vglover must be and idiot who is trying to promot arricams get a life.
we talking about low budget moveis in a very mint quality thats all even if the arricam are beter the red one is affordable and best at what it can do i am going fopr red one mate i have seen other videos that can tell you how good this camera is thanks for the vid mate and f**k all this saying a bad word about t his
Loved the vid! looked great. RED camera rocks! Is that The Shins I hear? Because RED footage + The Shins music = The ultimate movie experience. haha jk.
Mysterium™ is a 12-megapixel 24.4mm x 13.7mm Bayer pattern [single layer] CMOS-type sensor. It has an active array of 4,900 x 2,580 pixels. Each pixel is 5.4 microns.
As mentioned above, Mysterium™ is a Super 35mm [S35mm] sized sensor. This means that footage shot with the RED ONE has the same depth of field [DOF] characteristics as a motion picture film camera. Because the image is clean from square one, 4K appears significantly sharper than a 4K film scan would.
Yeah, you did kill the video with the ending. The shaking and paint color red. Re-do the ending and be more creative with the crash, make it more realistic. Do a side shot of him smiling with eyes closed, then loud horn beep, wheels screeching and go to massive motion blur on the face combined with particle generator for broken glass. Also make it more sudden, the stupid smile went on a little too long.
it took us like ten seconds to shoot the ending. it was more of an afterthought. what about making it more cinematic would make it funnier. I say nothing. that's not the point. do you know that he got in an accident? if yes then the point is accomplished. I wasn't trying to prove I can shoot an accident.
yes we got the point there was an accident but if thats your attitude towards the film, just banging an end together in 5 minutes then your going to wreak nice pieces of work. if i couldn't match the quality of the first parts then i literally wouldn't of bothered putting the end on at all weather it made sense or not. If its supposed to be funny then i would still say it was the wrong approach.
This video is amazing looking, the over all video content and quality over powers any minute flaws, so pretty much you guys can shut your mouths about clipping minute artifacts.
Only the base is 17,000. The whole thing would cost at least 25,000. And if I had 25,000 dollars lying around, I would buy a car haha. I'm not much of a renter. Maybe I would. Yeah.
RED just gave me a sensor upgrade for free, it's called BUILD 16. And have you ever seen the rolling shutter issues. If you can find an average movie goer that could ever spot one I will give you my RED. The highlights do clip a little sooner than film, but their roll off is very natural and organic and nothing like typical video.
Hey, don't get upset. I didn't insult the camera. But, a rolling shutter is a rolling shutter. I could understand if a normal moviegoer wouldn't even begin to notice the most blatant of rs. It just doesn't ENTIRELY gel with me, if you understand what I am saying. Maybe this clip (no pun intended) is just overexposed. I would like to think so.
I just think a better sentence would be "The RED is great. A few minor annoyances are as follows..." There are a few seconds with clipped highlights on the back of his legs in the video but that's it, nothing else in the movie clips except the center of the sun. And I knew I was clipping them when I shot it, so yes, I could've protected them more, but the whole shooting also took like an hour so there you go. Thanks for the comments.
the slo mo shots were 2k and not slowed down any in post - all in camera- one wide slo mo was 3k and the other wides were all 4k. at this resolution i defy anyone to tell a difference. you have to really be looking to be able to tell at 1080p

Also make it more sudden, the stupid smile went on a little too long.
denisbetsi 3 years ago
it took us like ten seconds to shoot the ending. it was more of an afterthought. what about making it more cinematic would make it funnier. I say nothing. that's not the point. do you know that he got in an accident? if yes then the point is accomplished. I wasn't trying to prove I can shoot an accident.
BlareMedia 3 years ago
yes we got the point there was an accident but if thats your attitude towards the film, just banging an end together in 5 minutes then your going to wreak nice pieces of work. if i couldn't match the quality of the first parts then i literally wouldn't of bothered putting the end on at all weather it made sense or not. If its supposed to be funny then i would still say it was the wrong approach.
But some nice shots.

We're actually using the Red One on our USS Seaviper feature film. This camera is amazing. By the way, you killed the video with the ending.

in a good or bad way.
BlareMedia 3 years ago
Film quality. I can't tell the difference between film and this. Red did it.
TheRealBladeRunner 3 years ago 2
right on. watch it on VIMEO you'll be amazed

Thats because your eyes aren't good.

Quote you fucking dumbass.
TheRealBladeRunner 3 years ago
This video is amazing looking, the over all video content and quality over powers any minute flaws, so pretty much you guys can shut your mouths about clipping minute artifacts.

thanks for the compliment.

When I win the lottery, Im gonna buy one :D
klpeekl2000 3 years ago
You don't need to win the lottery. It's only $17000. And you can rent.
TheRealBladeRunner 3 years ago
Only the base is 17,000. The whole thing would cost at least 25,000. And if I had 25,000 dollars lying around, I would buy a car haha. I'm not much of a renter. Maybe I would. Yeah.
klpeekl2000 3 years ago
Still, that's not bad -- 25k. If you were doing a short film it's like $1100 to rent.
TheRealBladeRunner 3 years ago
damn those red ones look sweet. if i had anything of value, i'd sell it for that camera.
emptytainment00 3 years ago
very nice camera work. good composition. i agree, the average moviegoer doesn't know the difference.
MakeMyMovie13 3 years ago
thanks a lot. it was fun!
Uncooltshirtsdotcom 3 years ago
gee, i hope the sensor upgrade comes soon. Red would be great if it weren't for gthe video highlights, and rolling shutter artifacts.
AmazingShoestring 3 years ago
RED just gave me a sensor upgrade for free, it's called BUILD 16. And have you ever seen the rolling shutter issues. If you can find an average movie goer that could ever spot one I will give you my RED. The highlights do clip a little sooner than film, but their roll off is very natural and organic and nothing like typical video.
BlareMedia 3 years ago
Hey, don't get upset. I didn't insult the camera. But, a rolling shutter is a rolling shutter. I could understand if a normal moviegoer wouldn't even begin to notice the most blatant of rs. It just doesn't ENTIRELY gel with me, if you understand what I am saying. Maybe this clip (no pun intended) is just overexposed. I would like to think so.
AmazingShoestring 3 years ago
I just think a better sentence would be "The RED is great. A few minor annoyances are as follows..." There are a few seconds with clipped highlights on the back of his legs in the video but that's it, nothing else in the movie clips except the center of the sun. And I knew I was clipping them when I shot it, so yes, I could've protected them more, but the whole shooting also took like an hour so there you go. Thanks for the comments.

How the damn did you afford this camera?
WelschVideo 3 years ago
didn't yet, still working on paying it off. that's why we're renting at such great prices.
Uncooltshirtsdotcom 3 years ago
how much does it cost to rent one?
Kolvincorpse 3 years ago
es absurdo mirar la calidad que puede ofrecer la red one desde un video youtube.
Pongan un video mostrando como se monta la camara y como se opera joer
IRIMIHAS 3 years ago
absolutely spectacular. Ah, what I would give for a RED ONE. How does it compare to Dalsa Digital Cinema?
kithriel18 3 years ago
thanks man. I've never used a Dalsa but I hear it puts out beautiful images at the expense of useability, ergonomics, storage, price etc...
BlareMedia 3 years ago
I'm assuming you know about the 3k RED SCARLET that's coming out, as well as the 5k epic. That's so sweet. cinematography will never be the same.
kithriel18 3 years ago
Nice vid, dude. Was that 2K or 4k?
MrPerdition 3 years ago
the slo mo shots were 2k and not slowed down any in post - all in camera- one wide slo mo was 3k and the other wides were all 4k. at this resolution i defy anyone to tell a difference. you have to really be looking to be able to tell at 1080p
Uncooltshirtsdotcom 3 years ago
Make sure you watch it in High Quality mode. it looks even better. thanks for the comments.
BlareMedia 3 years ago
Very good, I loved the color. Have you heard about the RED EPIC? ITS 5K! but cost 30k :(
JoeyRythem 3 years ago
Actually, it's 40K. :-)
SirHaakon 3 years ago
sure have, we might upgrade when it comes around but that'll be a year or so.
