@strud34 No, he is blipping to keep the turbo spinning and to get the engine rpm matched or greater then the speed of the gearbox, so he is always on the power.

those were the good old days!!!yes rohl was the man!no wonder he was voted driver of the millennium by his peers! and by the way that was the way to watch a stage!!i used to be one of those fans and i'm proud of it!!
The ban could have been avoidable. First of all, there needed to be better crowd control. Second of all, drivers shouldn't drive when they are ill. Third, teams shouldn't do crazy things to make their car handle better. End of discussion.
the only reason why gilles panizzi drives the evo w/o heel and toe is:the evo has a newer and better constructed turbo. If gilles would drive an s1 he would also use heel and toe
Bonkers compared to today. I think every boy racer should watch this and realise they are shit in their little saxo`s. Driving fast is an art and should be left to the experts.
downshift w/o heel and toe, but still keep the rpm in the rang. Please search "Gilles Panizzi Evo test" on youtube, you will see how he downshift w/o using heel and toe. Also in this video, Walther did not release the clutch all at once. Instead he's using the brake to balance the engine brake from the lower gear. Thank you for your correction for my wrong comment.
there IS heel toe involved here, watch carefully how his right foot is moving while he`s stepping on the clutch. also lots of match revving downshifts before going into left foot braking. I`ve seen the Gilles Panizzi Evo test video. yes, he doesn`t heel toe, but that`s just his preference in style of driving.
with that music it looks like foot-on-pedal porn.

This video is perfection. The cra[[y 80's music and VHS era haziness actually make it even better.

23noob23 4 years ago
With that monster turbo on the S1 you have to keep the revs up and not get below the range of the engine.
toraabe 4 years ago 2
Exactly, while stock 5 cylinder engines have a wide range, purpose build rally versions of it have a narrow power band at high revs.
It's very much like these modern over 10000rpm rally engines. If you make a mistake and revs go below the optimal range, you lose time fast.

What are you talking about? He was heel-toeing his d/shifts. He was also left foot braking and balancing car on throttle and brakes very well.
