Surprising that the Hinomaru markings did not bleed more under the masking, considering how thickly he applied the red paint. The tape must have been sealed exceptionally well at the edges. The painting skill he displays overall is quite remarkable. Freeing oneself of the airbrush makes things a lot simpler and safer (no more venting, no breathing of overspray.) Still, I personally will stick with the airbrush for the ease of getting a good result. I just don't have this guy's brushing ability.
This is one series of model builds that needs to be in HD. I think the airbrush fanboys would better appreciate his work. I believe in both methods. This guy shows the master crafting using the brush method,
The most inspiring modeling video I've seen. This guy may have got me to start again. All the reasons I stopped was the airbrush. Hated everything about it. Hated the breathing mask, hated the cleanup, hated the masking, hated the paint dust...
And in the end, this guy ends up with a more realistic finish anyway.
@blumax68 It's doable. I have an old Czech book on modeling techniques that shows how to do it. You cut your brushes very short and stipple the paint. I mostly airbrush now because it's much faster but you can get a very nice streak-free finish with high-quality brushes and high-quality paint (looks like he's using Gunze, I've had excellent results with PollyScale straight from the bottle).
In a oldest italian manual there is the same system for making german mimetic type for Bf109G 74/75/76 scheme, using a sponge. However the best system for my experience is a good gravity airbrush and acrylic colour sprayed at 0,2 atm.
He used some smaller decals...That goes to show you the old school way of building and finishing a model. Hand painted with thinned paints and a final 'weathering' with oils. Turned out great.
I think he also painted the "meatballs" on this zero... i saw him cut out a perfect circle on a large piece of tape, cut the circle out, taped in on the wings, painted it with a brush, removed the tape after the paint dries, and Voila!!! shit wish i had the patience of this great one in making a model...
An even lesser known plane involved in Pearl Harbor was the P-36. One pilot, woken out of sleep by the attack jumped into the cockpit of a P-36, still in his pajamas, and managed to get airborne with two other P-36 pilots and were able to shoot down a couple Japanese planes. The pilot in the pajamas was Lt. Rasmussen, who passed away in 2005. If your near Dayton, Ohio, you can go to the Air Museum there and see a real P-36 with a guy in pajamas climbing in the cockpit.
Good work !

Ok with the brushes him is a monster, but the "Zero" is just a color. I'd see a german WW2 camouflage with a brush!
