Well, that's part right. In truth though, it's not him that's losing any money from people downloading his music freely. It's the people who paid for the recording sessions--his label, basically. There are plenty of artists out there that've made gold records twenty years ago who still haven't seen a dime of their record sales due to recoupables. Bands and artists make their living these days off of live performances and merch (i.e. t-shirts and such) almost exclusively.
