What do you think of our role regarding bill HR 3101 which would require VOIP providers to pay to TRS fund and also make internet-based products and services more accessible to deaf people? We (VIU) support it and have signed the peition to support it. Should we not do that?

ADA, requiring phone companies to pay for TRS, was passed in 1990 which was before the Internet came into the picture. To date, Internet Providers (IP) are not paying one cent into TRS and are having a free ride eventho most of TRS minutes (including VRS and IP Relays) rely on the Internet! HR3101 should update the ADA requirements to include all IPs to pay their share.

I agree. VOIP providers are telephone companies. Because TRS fund is quickly getting smaller due to more poeple using VOIP instead of analog. And we are in support of HR 3101 to require VOIP provider to pay to TRS fund. Should we not involve ourselves in that political issue?

Also I am bothered how some interpreters want to get involved politically and are trying to be opportunist! Enough already! Also fee per month idea will never work. According to VR 80% of Deaf and Hoh people are unemployed and probably would not be able to afford a "fee." Plus with todays technology and webcams ability to use netmeeting to make videocalls for free, the fee idea wont fly!

For those who have strong opinion against paying fees for phone access through internet, I encourage you to look at issues on net neutrality and VOIP providers to pay to TRS fund as this can impact you. We support VOIP providers to pay for TRS fund because analog is now decline and means TRS fund shrink. It is complicated, I suggest you research and figure out if Deaf are safe from being impacted by that. (Gina Gonzalez)

VIU founder (Gina). Internet bill is for internet access (internet market) not telephone access market. FCC pays for telephone access for deaf people and will be happy to pay less by providers only providing the minimum. You want better telecommunications products/service, then that is where the money talks not the "disadvantages" and long list of bills.

mkallina, I can give you a parallel concept on email. Postal Office Corporation has suggested to FCC to charge 5 cent for every email transited between two parties. They claim that free email usage has affected their business' revenues. We the people did protest and FCC has heard our complaint. They decide to keep email as free of charge because people still paying the ISP and email is part of the service. It's applied to what VIU are trying to do. Why do we need to pay extra fees?

VIU sent a SUGGESTION to FCC on how to reform VRS. VIU membership is open to Deaf people too, and there are Deaf founders of VIU. My Deaf parents had to pay for phone services to call TTY to TTY, and also had to pay for long distance charges. Why is paying for video phone services so bad? I know there would be BIG change on the provider's side if their customers were PAYING. No more lousy unqualified interpreters, and no more bad connections for point to point using different VP products.

That is one thing to think about and ponder as you look at the deaf community's "glass ceiling" frustration in employment promotional advances.

IMHO, this organization VIU is so biased and unethical. I don't believe there's any Deaf member involved who could have objected against this outrageous action. As you mentioned there is a glass celing in vrs industry. There are many glass ceiling in different industries as well. A fee for ptp is useless isnce we don't have disposable income to pay for the service. The vp usage is a stepping stone for breaking the glass ceiling.

The fee for ptp will cause a domino effect. That means fcc can reduce the neca bill therefore vrs company may lay off interpreters to retain profit. In end, we will have long call waiting to obtain an available interpreter.

Please dont hate me, a while ago, I was chatting with my poker buddies at the poker table during a break time... I mentioned that vrs indsturies will charge us for using vrs... My buddies got freaked out... One of them said yes it will happen soon or later cuz FCC will get tired of paying millions and millions of dollars per year.... FCC will stop the fundings...
