@nichtsleezy You are right cousin, now enjoying his Trovatore with Sutherland; actually I was wondering what a remark like this might bring. Are you dutch, by the way?
This was Lucianissimo at his best. This music fit him like a glove and no one sang it better. Passionate but in full technical command. And the sound! The most beautiful tenor voice.....ever, Bravo, Maestro!
Why is it all his earliest and best work is impossible to get, but the later, weaker stuff is so widely available?
Surely someone with a controlling interest in his estate could see that things like this were released, so he should not be remembered by the next generation only for those fund-raisers with the Spice girls, etc?
I couldn't agree more - there is so much material of him in his prime languishing in vaults ( and, fortunately, circulating among collectors). By the way there is a parallel situation with Frank Sinatra at the moment - lots of dvds of a frail elderly man, but the great footage of him live and at his peak is kept by his estate who refuse to release it. It's all very odd, as you say, tragic for new generations. Long live youtube.
Yes, and the live film exists - i've managed to collect great "contraband" dvd's of Sinatra live in 1961, 1962 etc - amazing footage representing a high point in popular singing as art - yet the Sinatra family don't release it, even prosecute those who share it...I wonder what they are waiting for? They seem happy to release his weakest work. Many other artists seem to be suffering from this...
not his best day??? are you KIDDING ME??? this performance from 1978 in La Scala was supreme, hear the thunderous applause of the audience they love him, die for him. and the audience of La Scala are infamous for their criticism of the opera performances tenors . Luciano Pavarotti the most amazing tenor ever!
Good to see Pavarotti doing what he did best - singing in a real opera in a real opera house and not waving a hanky at 100,000 people in some rained-out park. I saw him once in Tosca at Covent Garden, thankfully before the "Nessun Dorma" years, and it was unforgettable, even though he was huge and "couldn't act for toffee".
Does opera get any better? I don't think so. Pavarotti at La Scala singing in Un Ballo in Maschera. And as if that is not excellent enough, the year is 1978! What we're watching here is a flashback to operatic history of excellence in the making.
Lucianissimo at his very best!! What a great role for him...the best Riccardo ever. He produced the most beautiful sound I ever heard. I thank him and God for the thousands of hours of pleasure he afforded me. R.I.P. PS....saw Licitra in "Ballo" at the Met - BIG disappointment!
greatartists - great post, and I totally agree about this scene. Its SO Verdi and so Pavarotti. I was fortunate enough to hear the man sing this in San Francisco - 1971. I was 11 and it was my first opera. I fell asleep durring that gallows scene, but woke up anytime Luciano came on stage. I will NEVER forget him.
What a man! What a voice! My wife and I honeymoon'd in Italia, and we listened to him before, during, and after. He is singing in God's chorus now. May his voice bless all the generations, as it has ours!!!
Earlier this evening I listened to the late Luciano Pavarotti's complete Decca recording of the opera with Solti (1985) - all of it. It's a great set to remember him by, and the rest of the cast is fine too: Margaret Price (Amelia), Renato Bruson (Renato), Christa Ludwig (Ulrica), Kathleen Battle (Oscar).
Listening to the recording only a few days after Pavarotti's death, it was particularly moving when the character whom Pavarotti is portraying dies at the end of the third act.
Thanks for the recommendation of the recording. It was amazing how the role of Riccardo fit Pavarotti's temperament and voice so well. What would Verdi have thought of him I wonder?
You can get this from various opera websites such as premiereopera, and from collectors - but it would be nice to see this commercially released some day.Too much of his best work remains unavailable....
This does not look at all like Abbado

amazing stuff!

Its wildly frustrating.
The vaults at the Met, as well as a dozen other opera houses, must have priceless stuff hidden away.
Any one of a dozen different productions of Tosca out there would be okay with me, though I would particularly like the one with Shirley Verret.

Funny you should say that. I have often thought that none of the footage available of Sinatra ever did him justice.
Live, he was electric, like no other performer, but the recorded television programs don't show anything like that.

今は亡きパバロッテイの豊かな声量に圧倒されます。仮面舞踏会は日本ではあまり人気ないですが、欧米では人気作品ということを再認識させられる迫力十分な出来栄えです。

Perfect singing and conducting: Pavarotti was a giant of Bel Canto.

This isn't a Bel Canto work though. If you mean he sings beautifully I totally agree.
