I was also recently diagnosed with tongue cancer at the age of 21. I've had to undergo chemo and radiation, one of the most disappointing things being a atheist is that most everyone around me is becoming more religious because of it. I was asked by a doctor if I believed in God, when I replied "no" he seemed to be at a loss of words and continued to prep me for my PET scan.

At 25 years old, I've followed Hitchens for some time, from my roots as a Catholic Christian, to today a non-theist. I didn't like him when he was well, I don't like him any more now he is ill and I wont like him any extra once he's dead. I have always admired his strength of character and that has certainly increased by seeing the way he is dealing with this terrible thing. I was also recently diagnosed with tongue cancer at the age of 21. I've had to undergo chemo and radiation, one of the most disappointing things being a atheist is that most everyone around me is becoming more religious because of it. I was asked by a doctor if I believed in God, when I replied "no" he seemed to be at a loss of words and continued to prep me for my PET scan.

At 25 years old, I've followed Hitchens for some time, from my roots as a Catholic Christian, to today a non-theist. He manages to summarize the reality of religion so concisely, only the truly brainwashed, denial ridden, selfish fairy land dwelling, fools could possibly still follow any of the old school religions (/cultures) that linger around today. Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Scientology, Hinduism, etc. etc. All silly...just so silly!

First of all, I do not agree with Homosexuality for one reason alone. It serves no purpose. The underlying principle behind holy matrimony is procreation. You need a man and a woman to ensure the propagation of the species. Homosexuality is the purest form of selfgratification.

@sportsportsport Yes, I think many of us started to count how many of those things we have achieved in our own lives. Personally, I think it's more a case of what might the three big things be in one's own life that one should think about achieving. It's different for each of us but as Hitch is such a scholarly fellow, his inevitably include writing a book. All the best in finding and achieving your Three Duties!

@Tapiola2007 Yes of course, likewise and thank you - although writing a book to me, is interpreted as simply writing. I think the act of writing and self reflection should be implied by that one duty. The other two are more obvious.

I like Mr. Hitchens. He makes a lot of valuable arguements. From what I recieved from him, I'm with the idea that the God we serve has not been taught to the greatest benefit of mankind. I believe in God, but not the way He's been taught here in America. I wish Mr. Hitchen the best.

@TeraPeoPunjabi Yes you're right, religion does prey on the sick, the weak, the poor and the stupid. I could say the same thing about Islam, it's affecting how much fun you have and discriminating against women, jews and homosexuals.
I take a genuine interest in the subject, money is irrelevant.
If you would like the argument to become banal and uninteresting; arguing with you is like arguing with a reclusive, closed-minded moron, it is however, incredibly enjoyable (if frustrating).

He has fought against Islam, not muslims. He has actually been very supportive of some of the Islamic poets and political commentators who fought against the fundamentalist parties of the past.
Using the word "we" hints that he is respectful of muslim idiots as well as muslim heroes. It's the belief that islam and christianity are mutually exclusive and the most important division that causes so many of the wars that plague the world.

I didn't like him when he was well, I don't like him any more now he is ill and I wont like him any extra once he's dead. I have always admired his strength of character and that has certainly increased by seeing the way he is dealing with this terrible thing. I do hope he can get some good quality of life from his remaining years.

The man has no equal that I am aware of. His words will change the world and his students will see to it they are immortal. He delivers sanity to an insane word. Morality, to a world that struggles to find common morality. Hope, to a seemingly lost cause and a fierce voice of reason. The thoughts we skeptics think, bravely said out loud with intellectual certainty that cares not of any ridicule. Condemnation of attempts to manipulation the masses with delusional fairy tales are his forte.

Brilliant. Sad. Inspiring. It seemed to me as if the interview started out with a little bit of optimism about Hitchens future and gradually evolved into pure rationality. He knows he's dying. We know he's dying. I too will pass his books down to my children. Great interview. I'm getting choked up here.

Watching this made me seriously think about writing a letter to Hitchens. And I'll be letting my children be free thinkers also. It will be a gloomy, sad, depressing day on earth when Christopher Hitchens dies, and hopefully that isn't for a long, LONG time.
