Ehhhh I don't know about this....maybe some people are taking advantage, but there's really a high rate of unemployment right now and people can't find jobs.  What are they supposed to do? Everybody needs help sometimes. Maybe they are mentally ill, maybe they DO have a drug/alcohol problem. It's not easy to overcome these things and just get a job! Maybe giving money to people on the streets isn't helpful, but I will not stop having compassion for them. Always give love.

In my experience homeless people really appreciate a friendly smile and a pat on the shoulder much more than money. Like any human being would. In my country we have this problem of Romanian Gypsies coming over to beg, pick pockets and steal anything that's not made of concrete. Most of the money seems to go to the Gypsy loan sharks, who financed their migration, not food, clothes or education for the children. Do I want to feed a loan shark? I love animals, but not that much.

when you give money to a homeless look inside of you for a reason you are doing it.

is it to satisfy your ego? or maybe you feel uncomfortable getting asked for a change and just want to get rid of him and give away your cash, maybe its hard to say 'no'? Most of the time its not real compasion.

I NEVEr give money on the street, for the reasons stated by this smart guy.

I must say i totaly agree with you :) Homeless people (MOST OF EM) like 90% are ppl who dont want a house but go out in the streets beggining to get drinks,and other stuff not necesary for living.. they also dont like working.. when u say them why dont they go to work they hit you or swear you:|

Homeless people do not like rules and authority, they are anti social and most are mentally ill. There are many families in need..many are losing their jobs..if you really want to help don't do it sporactically to make your self feel good..Look at me!! what a good person I am..now I feel good for the whole day..I just gave some bum a couple of bucks! My friend made a sandwich for a bum in front of her beach home and upon giving it to him he stabbed her to death.

Love that philosophy. Same too goes to the red cross symbology or other symbolic organizations. The money people gives to that group goes to the big wigs and not so much to the homless. I know they cry broke, look at the millions they receive every year vs the number of homeless. Last i read, law stated only 15% of the proceeds have to go toward that cause. Organization can legally keep 85% for themself. That is to say they did not crock their books. Just look at the ceo`s house and cars.

Until they CAN work you don't know crap. If these people who are worried about ID's without addresses were REALLY worried than they would be MORE worried about homeless people with NO ID's, so that's a lame excuse. not working cuz noone will LET you ain't even an excuse, that's just truth.

I agree with you about the handouts thing. They don't want pity they want RESPECT. So give them some and let them work and if they run away after 2 weeks than oh well atleast you can say you ain't a liar.

@seanjohn151 ~~ What the hell is the matter with you?? Not every person on the street can be summed up by your simplistic logic. Obviously you have Never been out on the street and homeless. Have you ever sat down with these people Long Enough to listen to their story? Sure some of them desire their way of life, but the ones I've reached out to - do not.

Sometimes a life can be completely turned around for the better just by giving COMPASSION.

I think it all depends and nothing must be done only through one way. There are many different ways. However, i agree with him that giving the homeless job and necessities is useful. If you give the person money, the money will be gone sooner or later and the person is still homeless. Rather let him have a work and gain stalbe income for himself.

I agree with most of what was said. But sometimes I would see an elserly person or a person with mental disablity? What should be done in that case. Obviously the state, governmental organizations should take care of these people , i guerss, using out tax money. But elderly and mentaly disabled cannot work...what should be done about them?

You are Right On! I give about 20% of my income to charity but I would NEVER give money to a street person. Don't enable them to continue living the street life and they WILL get the help they need.

i don't think anyone wants to be homeless. People want to be happy, feel peace and love. I believe homeless people have been through some tough times and thats why they drink and do drugs. I believe its true that we should not give them money but we should have compassion for everyone in need of love in this world.
