They announce it like it's a real sport.There are even "fouls" for going to the bathroom or becoming aggressive. Last year, they even brought in some cats.

I could see the hamster thing done like that, just putting them in costume and then pretending like they are fighting a war.

I don't think you can really say the show went downhill. It changed... it was the same performers every time. Ryan/Colin/Wayne were much more consistent than the British actors and McShane who generally represent the "good old days". But the US trio took fewer risks, and much less editting/selecting was done than in the early days, so instead of them doing 20 games and picking the 5 best, the US series just cut out a few that weren't airable. At any rate, different strokes for different folks.
