Both Korjus and the real life Mrs. Johann Strauss, Junior, (Jetty) were very beautiful women and were good opera singers. (Mrs. Strauss, Poldi, in this movie was a non-existant figure).
Also, the real life Johann Strauss, Junior, could not dance at all but his opera singer wife was a good dancer !!!
See `the Great Waltz`(1972), which was in colour. It gave a more accurate story of his life.
@xwiirastusx ......when she was injured in the auto accident in 1939 or early 1940 only her leg was injured and was already on tour again in South America when the US entered WW2. She performed in concert until she was married in 1952. After her marriage she still made records. She died in 1980. One of the great voices of all time. There is an official web site for her where you can buy a 4 pack cd. bonhomRichard1
I first saw this movie in 1948 when I was 12 years old.I still think Miliza Korjus is beautiful & had a marvellous voice. This was a great movie.I have a VHS tape & regularly watch it & still enjoy. What a shame that her Hollywood career was cut short by an accident.
Friends always find it confused why I am in great favour of those black and white movies. I simply told them we human beings, at some points were in the retrogress. We are losing the sense of art, the talent of art is leaving us. I dont criticize movies like Avantar, but with too much techonology orientation, Movie has lost its nature beauty that is excellent performance, music and scripts. If production of movie is only for profit, nothing else, movies as Great Waltz would never come back again
I adore this movie, not only for the its aesthetic value, but because with this movie I fell in love with Strauss. The music in it is so lovely, the singing-divine. I know it may not be his whole life exactly as it was, but it is a great story nonetheless. This movie, this great piece of cinema, will forever live with me in my heart... I adore this. The Great Waltz, this movie touched me, possibly more than any other. Miliza Korjus had a wonderful voice. Completely "angelic." Thank you for this.
Soy un fanático de esta legendaria cantante lírica...!! La conocí gracias a mi querida madrecita. que la admiró a través de las pantallas de cine, cuando era pequeña...! La volvimos a disfrutar en Vhs y Dvd...! ¡ INOLVIDABLES E INIGUALABLES IMAGENES...!!!!
absolutely wonderful!! I danced this waltz with my daddy. For my quinceanera (its like sweet sixteen but for fifteen instead) My heart dances with this song.
Seidel actually appears in a wonderful 1941 film titled "Melody For Three' starring Fay Bainter and Jean Hersholt (in a 'Dr. Christian' role). .As you correctly imply, his tone touches the heart and soul. Look for it as it was released on DVD in 2004 .Thanks for reminding us all.
Let us remember Toscha Seidel [the violinist who recorded the violin solos for the soundtrack]. One of the greates students of Leopold Auer (the teacher of Jascha Heifetz, Mischa Elman, Nathan Milstein etc.), his solo career was limited and he is almost forgotten today. But none of the currently famous violinists can even begin to approach his beauty of tone...
what a singer and a life ! check out her story on wikipedia she had a lot of struggles with health in her life and became a u.n. rep "" wonderful lady !!
It never ceases to amaze me how Miliza Korjus always not only sings amazingly well, but she always seem so bubbly and happy! You don't see such genuine love of music today in a performer! Lizzy _Tish
agree her voice gives me the shivers. she is the best waltz singer of all time. the expression on her face says it all when she sings. i like your posts.
Perhaps I love this particular masterpiece so much is that my parents were both born in that era when Austria-Hungary was still an empire. Both came to America from Hungary. Visited there, and fell in love with both Austria and Hungary as well as Miliza Korjus and Johann's music! Lizzy _Tish
Johann StrausssII and Miliza Korjus are still my favorites after over 50 years! Thank you so much for allowing us to see and hear their music once again! Lizzy _Tish
The scene in "The Great Waltz" where this song was first thought of and sung was great! Johann and Miliza were riding through The Vienna Woods, and caught musical glimmers of it there! Magnificent! Lizzy Tish
Absolutely wonderful! This was my favorite musical of all time! Thanks so much for giving some of it back to me! I had records of Miliza K. way back when, but wore them out many yrs. ago. Lizzy S.
from overseas have a look on the web! I agree this an outstanding film some parts look a little dated but one of the best films of its time and for me remains perfect that for posting this wonderful clip!!!
One of the most brilliantly photographed (and sung) scenes of Hollywood in the 30s/ The camerawork garnered an Oscar. Grand to see this classic, thrilling clip once again. Take a bow, Korjus!
As a portrait artist I couldn't find a better subject than that gorgeous sophrano in the wide-brimmed hat (in Strauss - The Great Waltz). Do you know where I can obtain a photo of her?
You can buy this online for a cost and worth it the best of the best!!

Interesting camera movement 4:38 - 4:44. Seems like they did run with camera, it is not steady at end.
