  • arent they only like 20 yrs old hahaha critics...

  • Ohhh lets rip on an 80's Phish show for a couple flubs. BFD! Go do something productive.

  • sloppy. ZPZ much better.

  • Fishman is quite underrated as a drummer. Look up 'Mike Portnoy Peaches En Regalia' and you find a video of Portnoy playing the same song with Zappa Plays Zappa. Fishman does a superior job here!

  • there a good band, this Phish

  • @horowizard you are a moron phish crushes this with 4 people better than zappas 11 piece band. it takes more "musicianship" when you can do it with 7 less people. you are a jackass...

  • @TheMrBaybutt Sorry, but horowizard has a point. The keyboardist in particular keeps dropping notes, and it sounds like he starts playing the wrong bar a couple of times and tries to cover for it. The rest of the band is workmanlike at best. Zappa's 1971 version, on which this is based, only had 5 members actually playing, not 11, and they put on a much greater display of precision and flair. Sorry, not hating, just critiquing.

  • @TheMrBaybutt ....You've lost your mind dude.....Lay off the brown acid!

  • @TheMrBaybutt And you are an asshole who wouldn't know musicianship if it came up and bit you on the face. Crushes? More like massacres it. What do you even know about it? It doesn't matter if the band has 4 people or 40. These guys just haven't got the chops to pull this stuff off as plainly evident here in this video. These boys don't come close to what the guys in Zappa's groups were capable of. Never in my life have I read a more pitifully moronic statement.

  • Sounds like it was modeled after the 1971 version

  • This what is and has been so cool about PHISH, They can play anything, and fucking rip it up!

  • woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.... This is why I like "The Phish" lol

  • This is horrible. Poor musicianship, no feel and no groove. So many mistakes. Phish ought to be ashamed of themselves.

  • @horowizard Are you listening to the same song as the rest of us?

  • @FrancisDrive I have no idea what you and the rest are listening to. Perhaps you ought to reacquaint yourself with the original.

  • @horowizard Well, remember this is an audience recording, transferred from a warbly tape. That makes anyone sound amatuer.

  • @unknownkingdom I don't think so. It may be a hand held audience job but probably digital. Warbly or not, the recording doesn't lie. It's the performance that is sub-par.

  • Hey! That's me a 1:33!...lower left corner... the guy swaying left to right... my face is lit up. The history books won't tell you this but everyone in that room was on X... which was still legal(ish) at the time. Phish owe a lot of their early success on the college campuses to that fact... in addition to the fact that they were mind-blowing live.

  • @TheFlownetwork .....So, in other words it cost you $25-$50 (1 or 2 tabs) to get off on X.....Go to a DEAD or FURTHER show and you surpass that buzz for about $5....Just keep your eyes peeled for the Visine bottles going around...

  • @TheFlownetwork Not EVERYONE was on X at that show. Some of us were on LSD instead.

  • so sad trey dedicates the next song to his sister T_T

  • Keeping the music of Frank alive, always a good "thingphish"

  • @kousebandslangen You do realize Zappa was alive when Phish performed this?

  • Has no one else noticed this was Summer of '89? Ha ha.

  • @guyyute Yep, Seen Frank live several times in 88. Excellent shows. R.I.P Zappa

  • so far 23 idiots watched this video!!!

  • Page with hair!!

  • Nice job Phish! This is my favorite FZ song, so I say that in a very critical frame of mind! Shows what a difficult song this is to play, yet you guys put a lot of emotion in there!

  • @hapexamendar Agreed.

  • Nice attempt, but quite a few wrong notes, especially during the double-time keyboard parts. Gotta give 'em credit for trying, though.

  • @bodhibrother Anastasio was dead on though, as Close as possible Frank was always unique.

  • @bodhibrother

Who gives a shit? It's a great rendition. Listen to the Zappa and Zappa plays Zappa versions on here. Some are a train wreck, others are fantastic.

  • phish and zepplin are un compareable

  • @kikimaru21355 oh yea?u need to check out phish 10.30.10 it will blow ur mind!

  • @thezepp68 false.

  • Comment removed

  • not bad for having half the amount of people in the band Zappa had while playing this live

  • Well, at least they like Zappa. They get points for that!

  • I love frank zappa and phish they are on my list of like top 10, phish being #1 of course ;) but the funny thing is, is that i was born 3 months and 10 days before this show haha

  • @thezepp925 being a LZ fan, how can you even tolerate phish?

  • @zachhartwell You are a fool for that statement.

  • @josiahscovel lol, ok.

  • @zachhartwell

This answers why if you like Zepplin you should like Phish.

Sssshhhh No stair happen when Trey plays it!

    youtube.com/watch?v=z6YzYNzZ8vo&feature=related

  • They did a respectable job with it. It's not an easy song to play.

  • I agree. nice try, but no

  • Nice try .. Frank wouldn't have cared. But it's weak.

    Sorry folks .. WEAK!

  • @shpilk I tho't it kinda groovy. It's a veri acceptable cover. It's got that so.Cal garage band sound. Something one might hear on a friday night in the 'burbs ;-)

  • The genius keyboard guy makes quite a few mistakes on this tune listen at 1:35 -OUCH!

  • If you want to hear Phish surpass the composers intent and instructions listen to them do this 1993-12-31.

  • Page with a glorious curly head of hair!!!! I have seen about 75 shows at The Paradise and every time I wish that I could have teleported in time to see Phish there or any other small New England club that phish played at 88-90. Pearl St., Stone Church, The Haunt, Toads Place, the list goes on.

  • admirable effort, but fails to execute the composers intent and instructions.

Go to the source for the real.

  • i played this zappa song along with a couple originals for a bar full ppl tonight... i love putting money into the jutbox so ppl can here this shit for the first time... were back .lets party

  • I have this show

  • message me if you could send! thanks phan

  • they killed this tonight at MSG (12/2/09'd)

  • Does anybody have any clue as to what the Charlie Parker tune is that the play after this?

  • take the a-train

  • Take the A train's not Parker... It's Ellington/Strayhorn

  • Donna Lee

  • Beautiful. Hope to hear this again from the boys someday...

I love Page's cheesy sounding keys from '89! Thanks for the awesome video j0ndaily.

  • Damn, they have a great piano player!

  • If this is too sloppy for your tastes then I can promise Phish is not the band for you. These guys aren't studio musicians and anyone who appreciates the band knows that there ability to play "perfectly" or lack there of has nothing to do with what makes them great. Even though they make lots of mistakes they are all technically great musicians and far more important, they have a shit ton of style and great improvisational skills. (Also trey has written some amazing songs).

  • The best music always comes from the ugliest people!!! PHISH ROCK!!!

  • hey same goes for the original mothers or invention. they ook even worse but there still awesome

  • Oh totally! Especially Roy Estrada & Jimmy Carl Black! Those 2 were like Lurch & cousin it!!! LOL!

  • haha don preston was the weirdest looking of the bunch

  • second. i know he came later but art tripp III also had a bit of a mug on him.

  • fucking LOVE the beginning. BIDDIBUDUMBUMBUDUBUMDUPDUPDOODAPDUDUPUPUPUM

  • how does it go?

  • @synestheticmusic Me too hahahahahahahah

  • @synestheticmusic Oh ya! Sounds like something Napoleon Murfy Brock would do at a Zappa show in the 70's.

  • "I would want to play for zappa, but i would'nt be good enough" - Fishman....Out of an old Relex mag i used to have

  • Zappa's music can be extremely difficult to play, as this song is. Phish does a damn good job here.

  • its not so hard

  • for some reason, muppets come to mind whenever i hear this song...

  • @jhachey222

Shoot, The band members even look like muppets!!!!

  • fuck that. fraggle rock.. u pussy

  • with all my love

  • i love that kid getting down right in front of trey

  • @arz703 : I think that's me at 19 years old and rocking out!

  • uhh pottycall, this was in 1989 - they have played the songs probably thousands of times since and trust me, they nail it!! In fact, this was probably one of the very first times they attempted it - 20 years ago.

  • I just listened back to this again. Yes, the sound quality may sucks but that deosn't mean the musicianship sucks because of THAT. At :45 the keyboardist plays the wrong chords. Guitarist sounds like a hacker at 1:17- 1:19 . Keyboards hack it up at 1:34 and many more spots too numerous to list. These guys need to SHED before playing such a hard piece. Nice try though.

  • these guys can shed.......

  • don't judge them based on their playing here? Why not, because it illustrates clearly that they suck. At every instrument the talent abyss is great, especially the drummer, who can't even hold the sticks of ANY Zappa drummer, let alone the great ones. This is not very complimentary of Phish, especially if you happen to have been listening to Zappa's band on your foay into YouTube.... ugh

  • You are obviously a total tool. Have a look at "Zappa Picks - By Jon Fishman of Phish"

Jon Fishman is a fantastic drummer.

  • Honestly, I like Jon Fishman's drumming better than the guy they have on the Zappa Plays Zappa version (Joe Travers?)

ZPZ sounds very stale compared to this.

  • This version (and all versions until '93) was played "by ear". They got the charts from Dweezil during the "Hoist" sessions in LA in '93. The re-vamped Peaches from '93 forward is far superior to this sloppy rendition.

  • This was done at the beginning of their career. Phish is pretty damn awesome, but I'll admit that this version is a pretty loose. Don't judge them by this video, I mean the guy did beat Carlos Santana in a guitar battle. Plus the drumming is pretty spot on.

  • @posdit : Actually, this was played four years into their career.

  • needs more guitar. i know trey's play. he's awesome and all, but it's inferior to frank's version (and with that, dweezil's ZpZ version).

  • Too bad Dweezil is only a Frank Zappa cover!!! And will never be as much a legend as Trey, or any member of phish for that matter. Ram that up your poop-shoot blastingcaps!!

  • Lit up by Dweezil?? Trey plays guitar with more emotion than most players I've ever seen. Why do people compare apples and oranges? Zappa and Phish different, but both amazing! Before you knock it, try it first and you'll see that is a blessing and not a curse. Go see a phish show. Buy the ticket, take the ride!

  • Your a fag.

thank you for allowing me to cyber bash you.

  • I love Paige's face @ 1:50. u can see him really rockin out. I love when performers get so passionate about playing awesome rocking stuff.

what a great tune! I was 8 years old during the time of this show... lol I remember this song from my first Live Phish Tape.. Old school Phish RULES!

  • Frank is rolling over in his grave like a fat pig on a stick. These guys should stick to silly rock and roll jamming. There are so many mistakes in FZ's masterpiece it ain't funny. At all! Stick to your goofy Dead ripoff jamming crap you thilly boys.

  • Frank was alive at the time this was show was recorded.

  • It's a good thing there was no youtube then 'cause he would've killed himself after seeing and hearing this version. Nice try but no cigar. It IS a hard tune to play and it is admirable that they tried but it makes them sound like hackers.

  • First of all if you dont know anything about music AT ALL, or anything about The Grateful Dead for that matter....i hate when people relate Phish as the wannabe successors to The Dead... They arent and they arent trying to be. If you even TRIED to listen to Phish's music you would obviously see, hear, and undersand that they dont sound anythinglike The Dead... Phishs jams are intricate and masterfully composed.. and these guys are sickly talented. The Dead is an influence in their music yeah,b

  • Ok...so Phish is not like the Dead when they jam. I know nothing about Phish and don't care to. I DO know that this is a LOUSY version of Peaches. Tons of mistakes all over this tune by all the "musicians" in the band. And by the way Hendrix sucks. All his licks were blues derived - he couldn't play through a chord change if he tried. Yeah he was one of the first to make noise on the guitar but his melodic content was bland and insipid.

  • riiiiiiiiiiight..... yeah i forgot how much Wind Cries Mary, and Red House, and Purple Haze, and Little Wing just SUUUUUCKKKK SUPER BALLS...... ur right just absolutely horrible songs...... jimi hendrix sux........... ur fuckin nuts dude.... go home... nobody likes u.... i think uve heard that one too many times in ur life huh?

  • (cont'd)but so is zappa zz top, clapton, etc...musicians grow and evolve into their own beings by influences from their idols...u tellin me hendrix and vai never had idols?..vai's idol was Zappa...SRVs was Hendrix.... eveyrone of those guys has created their own paths and beings, JUST LIKE PHISH...get ur facts straight before u go knockin on the band-waggon of PHISH haters...the only thing they have in common is long trippy jams, heavy following, and live based performances... music..nothing alike

  • First...do you play an instrument, or are you one of "those people" that think they are super cool because you go to a record store, find the section that's covered in dust because the music sucks, buys it and says to yourself "it's sooo great, people just don't get it!"? Second...do you have a lisp, or do you just liking typing w/ one? Third...pottycall? Really?

  • @briandrum1 hey man, just out of curiosity, (and laziness) who are you talking to?

  • some wise ass w/ the name "pottycall" he's was on this video about 5 months ago stirring shit up and talking shit....after reading his comments, I could just tell he was exactly one of those people that I described in my previous comment...

  • @briandrum1

    Hi Buttwipe,

I play drums very well and guitar and piano. I know what I'm doing. I was making money as a musician before you were crapping your pants. It's obvious these charlatans should've let the musc to FZ. Open your ears douche -baggie bag.

  • @pottycall Holy hell, you're stupid!

  • @briandrum1 You listen to Phish and I'm stupid. Phish = musical nothingness

  • @pottycall You listen to Phish and I'm stupid. Phish = musical geniuses

fixed that for ya! And yes, you are stupid...thanks for agreeing w/ me!

  • @briandrum1 = deaf

  • @pottycall = childish....If you're such a fantastic musician, why are you sitting on youtube arguing w/ someone that was crapping his pants when you were "making money" as a musician? Say hi to your mom for me! oh, and don't forget to change out your dehumidifier every couple days....those basements can't pretty stank!!

  • dude, I remember this song from live tapes back in the 90s... heard the song on the radio the other day and couldn't think of it.... glad it only took me a few minuts to find on here. GREAT SONG!

  • Hard to believe, that was 20 years ago to the date.. just got back from the Alpine valley show.. still kicking ass

  • Page has a ton of hair!

  • Fishman is killin on this track! This does kinda suck though, but mostly because of the sound quality. Maybe if some of these negative comments were made by musicians they'd have acknowledged that.

  • jesus, phish have been around for a long time. grateful dead still a better jam band though

  • It takes muscians to play this song......these are not.

  • excuse me....?? i know the great zappa is awesome.....so is steve vai, i see u are a fan obviously.....but if you have any sense of musicality or knowledge of the band Phish....which i know u dont know anything about Phish cuz you just said they are not musicians and u are judging them off a cover of Peaches and Regalia..... why dont you go take a listen to YEM, or Reba,Harry Hood,Guyute,Fluffhead,EPIC Jams where u will see how good they are.... Treys lines are derived from Zappa...hesa huge fan

  • they got more skill than you, trust me !!!

  • Some Phish tunes (reba, David bowie) could border on roughly the same level of difficulty as some of the more challenging Zappa tunes (bebop tango etc.). I'm not a phish-head or mega Zappa fan per se, but I'm a musician that knows enough that this kind of disrespect is unwarranted.

  • Indeed.

It's actually quite surprising how Zappa-esque some of the earler Phish material is.

  • You are right, he's a muscian and Tre is good but not that good. He would get lit up on stage by Dweezil or Vai much less Jaime Kime (I bet you dont even know who that is)

  • Funny that you would say "I bet you don't know who that is" as though you where some sort expert and yet you obviously have no idea what your talking about. Look at the compositional work Anastasio had done by his early to mid 20s.

To say one guitarist would get lit up by another is simply dumb.

  • You're right, I just dont prefer hearing his version of Peaches....I dont like his playing that much either, i dont know why, just dont. He is a great player none the less.

  • lol

  • u screw up at 1:33

  • Worse at about 2:00, but who really cares?

  • they are gonna play this at hampton, mark my words.

and i'm gonna be there to see it!

  • Zoinks! Theres alot of this "...mark my words.... ...at hampton" about these days.

    :)

  • I've always loved this song. I just don't care for this version. I prefer the Zappa Live At The Fillmore version.

  • Not bad!

  • THEY'RE BACK FOLKS!!!!

  • *Pholks

  • Uhhh how did

i missed that one, was I stoned? Was I sober...ok, let me now go on to say THEY'RE BAAAAAAACK PHOLKS!

  • will you be on tour this summer?

  • The drummer -not only him, but specially him- plays beautifuly

  • haha.

    the drummer's name is Fish,

that's why the band is called Phish.

  • this is the best i love zappa and phish sooooo muchhh they are my favs

  • and now they are back...

    next thesis?

  • Ahh,...the trampolines! I almost forgot about them!

  • Maybe, if you are talking about early Phish, say from '89 to '93 or '94. It went like this, if you ask me: 1986/87 - they wrote the core songs, they played them in their sleep for months and years on end. 1991/92 - they polished the act and wrote some more good stuff. 1993/94 - they became adept/adroit improvisors. In essence, they lived, breathed and ate together for 12 years. Then they got married, had kids, got rich, started dabbling in narcotics, the music suffered, they broke up.

  • I wonder what Zappa would of thought of Anastasio as a composer. It's probably like asking Mozart what he thought of Beethoven

  • While gifted, Trey is not even in the same ball park as FZ. Frank composed the music, owned the music, hired the musicians, trained the musicians, started the record label, booked the tours, and everything else. The response I get from classically trained musicians when I play Phish is usually lukewarm...they typically find Phish tonally and melodically monotonous. This is not my opinion - I love Phish...but Trey has nothing on Frank.

  • Well in terms of composition Zappa was more interested in rythmic exploration while Anastasio is more interested in melodic exploration. While not necessarily "classically" trained, I am a trained musician, Trey has done things Zappa never dreamed of, so I don't think your analysis is wholly fair. It's a matter of what your interests are. But I do think Zappa would have appreciated Trey's versatility and unique approach to composition which is anything but monotonous

  • Sometimes I think that Zappa has nothing on Trey. Both were so good it boggles the mind. I always appreciated Frank, but I never bothered learning his songs. I had to learn Treys though. I just had to figure out what he was doing. To compare them (or any other guitar players) is silly.

  • Zappa and Trey are on totally different levels.. you cant even compare the two (alright maybe you can)...one is a true composer, the other is a virtuosic improvisor. they are both musical geniuses who make the world that much sweeter...

  • true in a way, although zappa was no slouch at improvisation either. he could do both tremendously well.

  • zappa never sang and played his gitfiddle at the same time.

  • all you haters of phish can blow a fat one....

dont forget that phish was only playing this as a tribute to Frank Zappa in their own way. listen to some of Zappas early shit, it sounds just as raw and choppy

I love Zappa to death dont get me wrong but this cover is awesome

  • Well Zappa's "raw and choppy" was intentional. No seriously, he'd record it first and then deliberately chop it up for the sake of parody.

Nevertheless, this isn't bad. Not perfect either. You really have to have the song memorized to spot the mistakes... though that seems to be a typical behavior of Zappa fans.

The recording quality is the thing that takes most of it away.

  • sometimes this band rocks and sometimes they can suck my white staff

orange nemesis crail blightly under milky snalogn'

  • This is awesome!

These guys are amazing musicians and were able to cover this piece with 4 instruments which is pretty fucking remarkable.

  • Ouch - These guys are musicians ? We performed this song in my high school Jazz band and sounded a whole lot better than this. Kudos for attempting a popular Zappa tune but this is downright embarrassing. And to the person who said Trey is a better guitarist than FZ. I guess the Earth is bigger than Jupiter. An opinion yes, but not based in objective reality.

  • A few things wrong that comparison. I'm not quite sure the time span you guys take to practice, but it sure as hell is a lot more than Phish did. My guess would be they learned their parts and practiced it a few times, especially in 89. Secondly, this song is meant to be preformed by a full band including horn section, mallet percussion ect. I wouldn't call this down right embarrassing. I would say the fact that you asked if the members of Phish are musicians is embarrassing.

  • lol, hippie rage

  • You are a moron - the recording sucks not the musicianship

  • If you're high school jazz band is better than Phish, why don't you guys go on tour and make tons of money. That'll show 'em all.

  • You and your High School Jazz Band are GODS!!! All praise the great Arretus!!!

  • Really, you think you can beat a band that has been adored by many for many years. Id like to see you try, but i dont envy what will happen to you if you happen to meet up with any phish fan.

  • not a bad cover but zappa's sounds heaps better.

  • this doesnt sound digital for some reason. Awesome

  • 1st- there were NOT like 7 gtr harmonies. The "Hot Rats" studio cut was arranged for gtr, flute,e bass,kit,3 sax voices, and after playing thru the coda cut there is a clarinet voice on the out chorus. I'm sure Frank would prefer that if he is remembered at all- that it at least be an accurate memorial.

2nd - any Frank tune is going to be a challenge when arranged for a 4 piece is going to be difficult to pull off.

Finally, thank you for the excellent a/v sync and upload!

  • the original has about 7 guitar parts

  • Decent cover. Phish rock!

  • What was the last show they covered peaches en regalia.. just curious?? (i.e. I Don't have a Pharmers Almanac) Can somebody help?

  • This great footage man!!! THanks!

    Boogie on...

  • man they did a bang up job!

  • i think is awesome... good job

  • Trey can play guitar, I tell you what.

  • its hard to recreate any of zappas masterpieces. kudos to phish, they did a terrific job

  • Now ladies thats quite enough!!

  • nice version
