No, I almost NEVER double clutch. Usually just slip shift it. Super 10 was pretty easy, and less work. But they were not that reliable, we had lots of issues with ours. Weird electrical problems. A good Straight 10 is probably best. I have never used a 13-18 spd. But it would work the same... just more shifts.
Ok I have a question if u need to go in a lower gear to slow down for a curve or turn, how do u perform this action instead of putting it in neutral explain it for me.
Ok.. Your in 10th, you want to go to 9th. You let off the throttle till the load comes off the drive line. While moving the shifter from 10th to 9th your are reving the engine up a little, to match the RPM it wants. That is slip shifting down a gear. To do a true double clutch shift. You would clutch in move to between gears basically neutral, clutch out rev engine to match, clutch in, move shifter to 9th. It SOUNDS hard, but after you do it a few times it is not too hard.
Yep.. Camera is about the size of 2 boxes of matches. weighs about 2 oz. I just have it attached to a ball cap. That way my hands are free, and it looks where I look. It's a GoPro Hero camera.
No, I park my truck at the shipper. They have a nice safe lot that is fully covered by security cameras. I just drive up there, get in my rig, and leave with the trailer. I am home most every night.
It's a GoPro hero not mounted in its protective case, I just zip tied the camera onto the bill of a ball cap. The camera is VERY VERY light especially out of its waterprof case, maybe 2 oz. Cant evern tell its there. Works good, and it looks where i look, no hands required to work it. Just press the button, and start. Will record for 1hr with a 2g card. They are GREAT cameras. They make a 1080P HD version now.
what the heck kind of goofy ass transmission is that? automaticly switching between this and that. good god man give me a freakin straight ten and let me drive with it.
It's called a Super 10. It took some getting used to. When it worked correctly it was LESS work to drive it. But it could also be a pain. The best part was it would automatically shift between 9-10 if you had the cruise control set. So once you were on the highway it as really nice. I think in this truck it would have worked better with a little taller gears in the axle. I never used 1-2 always started in 3rd.
I feel your pain. I ran OTR for a while. It sucked too. But even though I am home on the weekends it actually sucks pretty bad. I am never working the same time in the morning, and never get on a regular sleep routine. I am often too tired on the weekend to do anything useful. I think I got more rest when I was OTR.
Can't say myself.. never driven a Pete. But of all the trucks I have driven. 2001 Freightliner Century, Volvo VN, International ProStar and 9400 Eagle, and a Class B Kenworth Flatbed. The Volvo was the best riding and driving truck so far. Now reliablity??? they all had issues of one type or another. The Century being the least troublesom. But also it had none of the EGR or other pollution crap on it.
I never had much trouble from mine, no more so than other brands I have driven.
Only thing foreign is the name Volvo, The Frame is made here, Body is Steel and is cut stamped and assembled HERE, The engine Cummins, CAT, Detroit.. made HERE, the Trans, Eaton Fuller, or Meritor made HERE, Steering parts are TRW made HERE, Axles are DANA or Meritor i think, Made HERE, and lastly and most important the trucks are assembled HERE in Dublin VA. So tell me how its a foreign vehicle
As a beginner you may not have much choice as to your employment. Many companies want experienced drivers so you might have to take a less desirable over the road job at first. But you might also get lucky first time around. Watch the paper and other job ads see whats out there.
Do you have any tips/advice, how to shift gears for a new student-truck driver? i have been watchin other vids about changing gears, but i still dont get it.
Sorry for the delay in reply. I would suggest you watch some of my shifting gears videos.. then let me know. I may be able to do another one that can show you what you want to know about if I have some idea whats confusing you. It really is not as hard as it seems.. and really you have to DO IT yourself to totally get it. Then you will either get it or not.
It can be hard, especially if you don't like being away a lot. I am not sure about the age. I think the age depends on the State you live in. But realistically not many carriers are gonna hire people less than 21 or so. Too much liability. AND not enough of a driving history at that point.. They wanna see a pattern of safe driving before hiring you.
Hey, I was reading my drivers handbook on the part on air brakes and it said that there is a 1 to 2 second delay between the application of the brakes and the actual braking action, what is that like?
Well, that seems a little long to me. I thought the TOTAL was about 1-2 seconds. Its about 1/4 sec for you to realize u need to hit the brakes, another 1/4 sec for your body to react and actually press the brakes, then about 1/2 sec for the system to react at all, another 1/2 sec for them to start to do anything. THEN you start to slow down. I could be wrong but I think that's about correct.
I would LOVE to have one.. But its not my choice. My employer buys the trucks. I have heard the new 6 Speed Allison Auto's are AMAZING. Check You Tube for some tests on those. They are popular with logging trucks, dump trucks and cement trucks. They do better in soft and muddy conditions than a regular transmission.
I always have lots of music. But I really prefer nice unabridged audiobooks. They keep your mind going, and really eat up the time. But sometimes some good tunes are whats needed.
It varies.. but figure $30K-40K+ to start. not too much... but you might get lucky. When i started I only got .28cent per mile.. but raised up to .34 cent by the end of one year... keep in mind that was 5 years ago.. so things change. I drive bulk now, and my take home pay is about $600-700 a week.. I am home every night.
You will need to get your CDL (Commercial Drivers Licence) I got my CDL thru Schnieder national trucking. They had a school and I did it that way. I am not sure if they are holding classes now. But thier number is 1-800-44-pride call and ask. You could also go to an independent truck driving school, and get your CDL that way cost about $4K. Salary varies but if your willing to run I would say $600+ a week take home pay. I drive solo. I am home every day now and make that much.
@kens97sto171 Thank you very much for ur help..btw $600 means $600 * 4= $2400 in a month..??btw i think u r now experienced dts why ur earning this much if i take licence now dn cn i earn dis??& I am an indian so i hv to make a visa so cn dey help fr me to write a letter fr job permission dn i ll take my visa..

I have heard that.. but they sell them in all the truck stops... never had anybody say anything. I dont use it at my new job.. the steering is lighter in the ProStar I'm driving now... plus I hardly ever back up anymore.
Yea... they are nice.. the ride quality was great. This particular Volvo was in the shop a lot.. but I think it was all related to crappy previous repair work.. electrical stuff.. Also had 4 EGR valves replaced. Lots of problems with 2005 Cummins EGR's .. not really Volvo's fault.
had my cdls for 5 years drove 3 of them but had to come off road because of my kids getting into trouble there grown now so its back out there niceeeeeee
Schnieder National is running their CDL school again.. 1-800-44PRIDE
I think that is the number.. talk to a recruiter, and get the details. Its a good job for youg people... work you ass off for 3-5 years, then go to something more relaxing.
Well that sucks.. HMM.. I was listening to American Trucker Network on 700 WLW and someone called in saying they were running classes again. Maybe they are only running limited classes now. Best to call them and find out for sure.
@kens97sto171 i did earlier to make sure again there not. but after you get your cdl they will reimburse your tuition cost up to $5,000 only if you work for them of course
@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI i know but the bad thing for me is ive been laid off since oct. 13th of 09 with unemployment its hard to get 5000 like that. it sucks for me. im only getting 297 bucks and it sucks just no work and i live in delaware.
hows the truckin life? everyone gives different answer..to me ive never been in a semi nor have i ever driven one..but driving cross country sounds kinda fun when your haulin alot of shit
Life on the road can be great and it can SUCK. If you have lots of freinds and family or a wife or GF.. it will suck to be away. If your young single and have no real ties to home.. It can be very cool, get out there and work you ass off while your young, get your doubles, Hazmat, tanker, and any other training you are interested in like flatbed, or specialized. Work like crazy for 3-5 years,, Put every penny you can into savings and retirement. then relax to something easy.
Yeah, I have heard that, but they sell them in every truck stop I have ever seen. I don't use one in my current truck, the steering is little lighter. Plus I almost never have to back up anymore driving bulk tankers...usually just pull thru.
Thats what they were called.. when I was young. I just looked it up.. on Wikipedia this is directly from there. they were originally called Brodie knob's named after a bridge jumper named Steve Brodie (1863-1901) He suposedly jumped from the Brooklyn bridge and survived. Brodie became famous, and his name for a time became slang; to "pull a Brodie" or "do a Steve Brodie" came to be understood to do something flamboyant and dangerous.
European drivers dont spend weeks on end living in thier trucks do they?? Thats why they are bigger here. I like the Euro trucks though.. for some routes they would work great.
@kens97sto171 european drivers do actually spend weeks on end living in their trucks, and plus american trucks are way too big to fit on european roads. good thing about the amrican trucks is that they have a hell of allot of space, all good for the driver. but live the volvo beautiful truck. great vid.
Yea no switch on the front. This one is on the side. Its not the same mechanics as a straight 10. I don't know exactly haw it worked. I am working someplace else now and am back in a straight 10. I actually prefer this in some ways. I would really like to try one of those new Allison automatics... seen some good reviews on them.
I had to be 21 to get mine in Iowa so i dont know but dude its not really all that hard unless you have hours of 9-3 in the morning its hard i have 4-10 so yeah...
No its a gear set.. when you flip it and the load comes off the tranmssion it goes into the gear... I have never seen one apart.. so not sure exactly how it works.
hey i was thinking of becoming a truck driver so im wondering how old do you have to be to get the truck license and is the job it self hard i mean its few hours of driving. If its possible can someone tell me. Im really exited about cars and trucks and other jobs just dont get to me . :)
I think u have to be 22 but it may vary state to state. Also company us have age requirements. I would go to a truck school at one of the major carriers. I sent they Schneider National school. It was very good. You will find yourself driving 8-10 he's a day on average and it can be stressful. I would try and find a friend or family member to go out with in a truck before u commit to it.
I drive a kodiak 5500 with 30 ft gooseneck and i had to get cdl-a(Oklahoma) . I had to move a customers truck the other day and its an old volvo LTL type truck with i think a 9 or 10 speed. I wish i could get a truck like that when if i get a new one later. i have an auto with hyd brakes. i would have to get the air brake and auto tranny restrictions removed too. I wish i had an intl 4400 w/dt466 and 9 speed.
Yeah, I know.. I'm not too worried about it. It will come to me like it did when I first started driving a car. At least I've drivin something half the size up a tight two lane road. My 31' motorhome and the whole time up Hume Lake Rd I never once went past the lines. But that's beside the point. I think I'm starting to get the concept of the split gears and double clutching. I've been looking at a few diff videos and it's finally starting to make since lol
I think it's cool that you keep the cam on your hat. A lot of drivers have the cam elseware and you really don't get to see the view from the drivers seat. It allows the viewer to get a better look at what it will be like when he/she is in the real thing. Somebody as myself, who will be going to CR England trucking down south of me, this sort of thing kinda helps. Still tryin' to figure out that split gears and all, but I'm sure I'll get it. Take care bud, keep on truckin'. be safe
Never would have thought of doing something like that with the camera! I think I'm gonna take your idea the next time I make a video of me driving. Keep up the great videos
got my permit last week, did some driving on the road, and the back-in, pull forwerd, right turn, but the 42 back up is getting me. but I LOVE the way the truck feels. And how long have you been driving?
Glad to hear its going well. The angle backing will take some time..but u will get it eventually. And it will be second nature. I have been driving g for 5 yrs.
Sorry I have no idea. The rules for your CDL vary state to state a little. You may be able to get tour cell at 18.. but almost no company would hire u. Most start hiring at 21 or so. Call your local motor vehicle office they could tell u.
Great news glad its going well for ya. As you gain more experience more opportunities will open up. Just drive safe and keep your MVR clean both in the truck and in your personal vehicle.
Just read you study material and do your best. I don't remember it being that hard.. but your state's test may be different. So read that book.. there are some catchy questions.
Thanks glad you liked it. The cap can works pretty good. I wish the white ballance was better on the cam. Its not working so good now... my audio has started to really suck bad..something is wrong with the mic input. Looking for a simple way to record it separately.
You don't really need to use the cough once your moving. You just pull the shifter out of gear as you ease off the throttle with no load on the transmission it will just slip out of gear. Then push it into the next gear as the revs drop to to the right spot. These transmissions don't have any synchronization.
the button makes the transmission go from low to high range.. its kinda hard to explain. And not all transmission have it..most don't. In a regular straight 10. You would shift 1-2-3-4-5 then flip the range to high and move the shifter back to 1st position. which is 6th gear....then continue 6-7-8-9-10.
@trafficjam10 It's mounted to the brim of a ballcap thats on my head. The camera is VERY small and VERY light. Check out my GoPro Hero review to see the camera.
You have to get your hand off the shifter when your rolling, you will end up with carpel tunnel syndrome like me after 15 years !! It's a bad habit, look how your wrist is bent, and it's this combined with the vibrations that cause carpel tunnel. It's aterrible thing to have trust me. Nice vid and keep em' comming !
@RiverGhost007 Thanks for the suggestion i never would've thought of that. It is a comfortable position for me, but your probably right about it causing problems in the long run.
@RiverGhost007 Thanks for the suggestion i never would've thought of that. its a comfortable driving position for me but you're probably right about it causing long term medical problems thanks again
@RiverGhost007 Thanks for the suggestion i never would've thought of that its a comfortable driving position for me but you're probably right about it being a bad for your wrists.
The thing you have to remember is that HP is a calculated number not measured. The formula is: Torque x RPM Divided by 5252 = HP
These engines don't rev much.. so the HP number looks lower than your used to seeing with a gas engine.. even a big one. My Cummins 15L ISX is making over 1600 lb-ft at 1200RPM. The engine will not rev past 2000RPM.. and us usually running at 1500RPM.
Hey great videos, and explanation on your information. I was wondering on how the shifting works in the truck? I was wondering if you have to push the clutch in every time you have to shift or if you just let off the gas and shift it?
very nice !!!

Yea... they are nice.. the ride quality was great. This particular Volvo was in the shop a lot.. but I think it was all related to crappy previous repair work.. electrical stuff.. Also had 4 EGR valves replaced. Lots of problems with 2005 Cummins EGR's .. not really Volvo's fault.

Schnieder National is running their CDL school again.. 1-800-44PRIDE
I think that is the number.. talk to a recruiter, and get the details. Its a good job for youg people... work you ass off for 3-5 years, then go to something more relaxing.
kens97sto171 10 months ago
@kens97sto171 there not> you have to get your cdl first then they hire you

@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI
Well that sucks.. HMM.. I was listening to American Trucker Network on 700 WLW and someone called in saying they were running classes again. Maybe they are only running limited classes now. Best to call them and find out for sure.
kens97sto171 9 months ago
@kens97sto171 i did earlier to make sure again there not. but after you get your cdl they will reimburse your tuition cost up to $5,000 only if you work for them of course
1962Galaxie514ciMPFI 9 months ago
@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI
Well. thats something at least. You should be able to get CDL school for around $5K
It was the same deal with thier own school.. you had to work for them for 1 year.. or maybe 2. Or you could pay them $4500 for the classes.
kens97sto171 9 months ago
@1962Galaxie514ciMPFI i know but the bad thing for me is ive been laid off since oct. 13th of 09 with unemployment its hard to get 5000 like that. it sucks for me. im only getting 297 bucks and it sucks just no work and i live in delaware.

hows the truckin life? everyone gives different answer..to me ive never been in a semi nor have i ever driven one..but driving cross country sounds kinda fun when your haulin alot of shit

@jlagraba

Plus I almost never have to back up anymore driving bulk tankers...usually just pull thru.

suicide knob?
fishtankfreak 1 year ago
@fishtankfreak

I would really like to try one of those new Allison automatics... seen some good reviews on them.

hey i was thinking of becoming a truck driver so im wondering how old do you have to be to get the truck license and is the job it self hard i mean its few hours of driving. If its possible can someone tell me. Im really exited about cars and trucks and other jobs just dont get to me . :)
polakdawido 1 year ago
@polakdawido
I think u have to be 22 but it may vary state to state. Also company us have age requirements. I would go to a truck school at one of the major carriers. I sent they Schneider National school. It was very good. You will find yourself driving 8-10 he's a day on average and it can be stressful. I would try and find a friend or family member to go out with in a truck before u commit to it.
kens97sto171 1 year ago
@polakdawido You can get your CDL when you are 21 but i hear that most compoanies want you to be 22 some require you to be 25 .

I wish i had an intl 4400 w/dt466 and 9 speed.
bobcats330 1 year ago
Yeah, I know.. I'm not too worried about it. It will come to me like it did when I first started driving a car. At least I've drivin something half the size up a tight two lane road. My 31' motorhome and the whole time up Hume Lake Rd I never once went past the lines. But that's beside the point. I think I'm starting to get the concept of the split gears and double clutching. I've been looking at a few diff videos and it's finally starting to make since lol
radioman135 1 year ago
I think it's cool that you keep the cam on your hat. A lot of drivers have the cam elseware and you really don't get to see the view from the drivers seat. It allows the viewer to get a better look at what it will be like when he/she is in the real thing. Somebody as myself, who will be going to CR England trucking down south of me, this sort of thing kinda helps. Still tryin' to figure out that split gears and all, but I'm sure I'll get it. Take care bud, keep on truckin'. be safe
radioman135 1 year ago
@radioman135
Glad you like it. The shifting is pretty easy.. once u do I a few times.it will be easier.

Sorry I have no idea. The rules for your CDL vary state to state a little. You may be able to get tour cell at 18.. but almost no company would hire u. Most start hiring at 21 or so. Call your local motor vehicle office they could tell u.

so you dont use the clutch when shifting gears? im confused
joewarcupinhull 1 year ago
@joewarcupinhull
You don't really need to use the cough once your moving. You just pull the shifter out of gear as you ease off the throttle with no load on the transmission it will just slip out of gear. Then push it into the next gear as the revs drop to to the right spot. These transmissions don't have any synchronization.
kens97sto171 1 year ago
Thanks for replying.
lalabadsha 1 year ago
Thanks for uploading a very instructive vedio. Can u please explain a use of atomatic shift button? Is it necessary to use it?
lalabadsha 1 year ago
@lalabadsha
the button makes the transmission go from low to high range.. its kinda hard to explain. And not all transmission have it..most don't. In a regular straight 10. You would shift 1-2-3-4-5 then flip the range to high and move the shifter back to 1st position. which is 6th gear....then continue 6-7-8-9-10.
kens97sto171 1 year ago

kens97sto171 1 year ago
You have to get your hand off the shifter when your rolling, you will end up with carpel tunnel syndrome like me after 15 years !! It's a bad habit, look how your wrist is bent, and it's this combined with the vibrations that cause carpel tunnel. It's aterrible thing to have trust me. Nice vid and keep em' comming !

450 horsepower? i always figured these trucks had at least 800. i stand corrected.
SkooterBush 1 year ago
@SkooterBush
The engine will not rev past 2000RPM.. and us usually running at 1500RPM.
kens97sto171 1 year ago
Hey great videos, and explanation on your information. I was wondering on how the shifting works in the truck? I was wondering if you have to push the clutch in every time you have to shift or if you just let off the gas and shift it?
Thanks, and stay safe!
