The problem is when RTD condemns property they pay "fair market value" as is, probably a few hundred thousand. Then, they park trucks on it for a couple of years, get the light rail in and sell it to a developer for a few million dollars. This is completely unacceptable in a nation founded on an individual's right to own property.

While I sympathize, the couple & Jon make this sound like a vast, govt. conspiracy. Jon says RTD is giving the property to another (3rd) party, but that's not true. Nothing published indicates they intend to transfer property ownership to another party. I disagreed greatly with the Kelo decision, but this case doesn't even go that far. They'll get fair market value, but that's it; that's all the law calls for.

In Houston our own trainset, METRO, commands a 1500' condemnation radius around each station. METRO continues to float development schemes, is poised to begin construction on more tram lines at costs per mile that are unsustainable (love to throw sustainability in their snozzled faces), and hires former city cncl hacks for 6 figure plus CONsulting services (probably of a flat-backing kind).
