Thanks, 5-6 efficient blades makes for a faster rotating unit but with area similar to a 2.5-3.0metre, they were going quite fast so looking bent is just a camera effect. It is a 1.8 metre Futurenergy rotor.
@WindyJAMiller high swept area is good, not the only parameter, what about rubbish/great shape aerofoil? large diameter rotors ARE inherently slower, mass produced Mongolian grp blades are incapale of surviving anything like the 900+rpm these can , most snap off at 30 odd mph or so I have run these in Winter Gusts of 80mph with no ill effects,the tips just bend back 1/2 an inch, & the cast alloy hub won't go anywhere, obviously no good for huge pmg's in mild winds, Thanks for Interest also.
Just purchased one of these units from ginlong for the Big Green Gathering in Somerset. How efficient is it connected directly to a battery bank through a diode bridge? I'm worried that at lower speeds I will not obtain a 48V output, though I suppose that the rectifier will prevent reverse loading of the batteries to the PMG.
Do I only need a rectifier and then direct connection to a 48V battery bank?
Hi Joel, just saw your query, bridge rectifier/s are fine, use a 100v model best suits voltage 2 or one 3 phase model. Voltage wise don't worry as the no load voltage is higher than what's required.
This 48 v model would light a 12v 55 w bulb just when spinning the rotor fairly quick.
48v is the rating will go up to 65+ volts when spinning properly to allow for 14v+ for charging per battery, at 250-600rpm, e mail me i can dig out /send u some power graphs.Dave
One thing Joel i did run it briefly with no load in a brisk wind and even with that small 6ft prop volts were rising to 65-80volts, on load slows rotor down which is just as well for rotor/ blade preservation.
@ringleaderuk Yes don't worry, with a bridge rectifier it won't 'flow back' running batteries down at all, they serve as a one way valve in essence. I think you will find it will reach way above 48v mine was hitting 80+ when not connected (not usually a good idea for blades) . the battery serves as a moderating load, probably see it rising to 60 odd Volts at times which is ok
Cables were just clamped at the top of the frame, never had this perceived 'tangling' problem, though you can buy a slip ring if worried they are £70GBP!.

That prop was far too small /insufficient area for pmg, pmg is 1500 w rated and will make 2kw at 640 rpm and about 70+ volts, i did see 27 amps in strong wind so 27a x65v= the watts, they use these pmg's (a smaller model)on the TLG WINDPOWER in U.S.A. if u google it have lots o pics, thanks for your interest.
It's the frame rate that's the issue, not the camera, if the frame rate divides evenly into the RPM, and the exposure speed high enough, it'll appear to be stationary. And, because the optical sensor scans from top to bottom, the blades appear bent, as they move across teh band being scanned during the exposure.
No problem, i must admit i am not much of an expert on cameras, this pmg (white generator unit) is now in County Wexford in Eire Ireland with 3.2 mtere blades on it lol!, thanks for observation pal, Dave.

This is the first ever 5 bladed windmill that I have ever seen. Also the blades look very bent. Nice job.

@wind4watts The number of blades has nothing to do with increasing the area. Swept area is the only perameter that limits power from the wind.

Well observed! Also the fact that it's a 5 blade prop creates a need for a higher frame/second rate.
