As I understand it the TOW requires helicopter to be constantly aimed at the target till impact while the hellfire can be guided with a laser or the new models can use radar. For soldiers on foot I would switch to the hydra rockets.

Not quite correct about the TOW. The TSU (telescopic sight unit), not the helicopter, must remain aimed at the target until missile impact. The helicopter can maneuver and turn away from the target after firing as long as post-launch constraints are met. The rear-seat pilot has a HUD which indicates these constraints. It is a disadvantage, however, because the aircraft is still unmasked and vulnerable.
