  • As for capitalism, I like it but there's a line between capitalism and greed, and it gets crossed all the times. We are telling ourselves and teaching the younger generation, yes, capitalism is good, be driven by the money. Then we wonder why we get shoved into the nursing home when we couldn't take care of ourselves anymore. "But Ma, the boy's dad been working so hard (to cover all the things we want) and we only have a couple of days off. He needs time to decompress. We can't visit Ma."

  • Stossel's "gov't can't count vote"...oh they can if they want to....As for the Canadians in the audience not raising their hands for UHC? Is it possible that since they were in the US means they had the money to take the trip? And that they still have the money to travel because the health insurance bills haven't bankrupt them or keep them poor?

  • You people that think Krugman got owned are fucktards. His point is that the cons took controll of goverment and wrecked it. Example: Medicare Part D

Also he should have asked those Canadians how many of them would have traded their system for the USA system? None.

Since when did this lying fraud Sally Pipes have any credibility on this issue?

  • I love when Paul Krugman doesn't get the response he was hoping for he then says "okay well I guess I won't try it". Also, Cannon absolutely OWNED Krugman in this debate.

  • What a moron.

VISA keeps the accounts correct to a penny, and yet government can't count votes? What a stupid analogy. Perhaps he's not familiar with the concept of software.

  • Krugman GOT OWENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOL Krugman! LMAO!

  • Unbelievably, most of the arguments by the GOP panel favor gov't insurance. Pipes argument that Medicare patients can't get doctors because the gov't keeps the fees down would be solved by a universal system. This is really a debate over practicality and ideology. The GOP will avoid all gov't programs. I think they should propose the police and fire dept be run privately. If you want them to come out, give them your Mastercard number and they'll be right there.

  • Compare this Nobel prize winner to the other one we had. Milton Friedman

Krugman would be in bits sobbing if he had to debate Friedman.

  • @ 5:09 noone raised their hand in favor of their care!!!!!!!!!!! Canadians even get it! STUPID STUPID LIBERALS

  • I laughed so bad when that guy tried to get Canadians who liked their healthcare and all of them hated it. Goes to show you whats really going on.

  • 5:00- 5:14

Paul Krugman = OWND by his own little trick. You can tell he was absolutely flabergasted.

  • doesn't take much to get a Nobel Prize these days...

  • Krugman comments of medicare and social security were ridiculous

  • Yup. Krugman may have been a good economist at one point, I don't know. Now he's a political hack.

  • Fuck Paul Krugman. I'm getting really sick of him trying to conflate the Republican Party with Libertarian free-market reasoning. The Libertarian guy blasts the Republicans more than Krugman does. ...but Krugman still tried to conflate the two VERY DIFFERENT ideologies.

  • haha.... I see fuck Krugman and think man that's something my friend would say and sure enough. What's up man? False dichotomy all the way. the wise federal government versus the "unfettered" free-market. Democrats versus Republicans. Libertarians don't fall neatly enough in this false dichotomy for Krugman's tastes so he has no choice to think Neo-Con=Republican=Libertarian.

  • Audience 1, Krugman 0... haha

  • Doctors get paid by procedure and hospitals get paid by filling beds as well as procedures. Its a conflict of interest. Get your investigative reporter hat on and quit telling us about how bad Canada and the UK are and go find us the best solution that is active today. Try France, Germany, Belgium, Japan or Korea

  • Stossel I hope you read this: Any capitalist wants less government. Its not that we run to government as we all no its the last resort and we are at the last resort. Pharma companies do not want to CURE anything. They want us to take drugs and when that drug has a side affect we take another one. Thats business keep the products moving. When was the last time they cured anything? Jonas Salk didnt work for a company and he didnt patent his discovery. (cont)

  • You obviously don't understand that intentions have absolutely no effect on results. Maybe you should trust the free market a little more, it's what has created all the good things you know

  • Stossel needs to take a basic logic class. This falsehood that capitalism equals innovation is ridiculous. Crave for profit does not equal innovation. That's the logical equivalent of saying if p the xyzirj. Crave for profit results in innovation to create new profit not to service the customer in the best way. This includes lowering the quality of the product (Ford, Chevrolet) in order to attempt to increase profit.

  • stossel operates from the stand point of pure logic . super zzzzz comment missed the point completely crave does not create profit competition creates profit . answer me this how did america go from 13 small colonies to the most prosperous country in the history of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maximal profit for a corporation is not created under perfect competition. It is created in a monolopy.

The United States exploited Slavery to jump start its economic prowess. Upon the abolition of slavery social darwinism was then so readily embraced by the majority of entrepreneurs. Look no further then the homestead strike and Andrew Carnegie for a fine example. The strength of this nation was built on the underpaid work of the slave and labor classes.

  • @SuperZzz1234, you have obviously never been part of a design group where service to the customer IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL! these companies have paid for their short sights and they are changing to a client focus. that is capitalism. sometimes it moves painfully slow but when real capitalism i.e. competition comes along the wrinkles get ironed out. you see it in all types of businesses. the bad will go away sooner or later. unless you're microsoft.

  • What an idiot!

  • Krugman owned..

  • within the first minute is bullshit! Thats not how capitalism works! You can make better profits by keeping your customer in the dark about how things work. People go to hospitals and doctors, and have little choice about it, there go where they can and there given huge bills that they can't pay.

  • John Stossel understands what you mean. Most of his career was chasing scam artists as a consumer reporter. (And they'll be able to prosper under a top down system as well.) What he means is that under freedom, people tend to organize themselves so to avoid such problems.

For instance, in your example, in a free market, an entrepreneur that doesn't keep customers in the dark will be able to charge higher prices for the service, thus the situation you propose couldn't be a stable equilibrium.

  • John is the man, Krugman needs to go back to explaining temporary international trade trends and leave social issues alone.

  • The US doesn't have private healthcare, we have corporate healthcare.

  • poor paul krugman. His little trick backfired.

  • LOL - the Nobel Prize winning economist maybe isn't as smart as he thinks he is! He also had to throw in his little jab that Bush "stole" the election. Imagine if Gore was our president; I think our economy would have tanked long before now because he would have forced massive government spending to provide everyone with hybrid cars and energy efficient light bulbs. Companies didn't cause this mess - government did!

  • So very true kind sir.

  • I love it.. What a putz...LOL

Who is high pitch guy with a "wife."? Woo hooo!

  • wtf is wrong with that? he graduated from Princeton

  • Care to cite an example of these inaccuracies?

  • what is the problem w/ corporations?

  • Gee, can't seem to think of any that wouldn't require someone crawling out from under the "invisible hand" long enough to look at the lead stories on the economy from every day for months now.

  • Corporations provide jobs, provide technology advances, provide new products, and build cities. I would argue government interference caused a lot of the mess we have today: Frank & Dodd pushing banks to lend to people that couldn't afford to pay it back, the ridiculous Mark to Market rule that constantly revalues companies, and the Fed lowering short term lending rates to almost zero. Now again, what is wrong with corporations? When companies are left to live or die, we're all better off.

  • I completely agree. It's too bad most people who enter into government don't think this way.
