Remember people, she was living in East Germany, not the United States. That means she was not free. If she took steriods, it's not as if she had a choice. The same goes for her cooperation with the Stasi. If she refused, there would have been serious consequences. Rent the movie "The Lives of Others" - it will enlighten you about life in the GDR.
When turned her sultry eyes on the judges and flirted shamelessly, there was no way she wouldn't win. Of course, she had the talent to back up her sexiness!
When did Kati admit to using steroids? Watch her ' West Side Story' program in 1987. If she's on steroids, you could've fooled me. I met her and we're about the same height and weight only Kat is younger and more toned. She's just very well trained and enjoys Figure Skating.
She doesn't look like someone who uses steroids - like the east german swimmers in '76 who looked like men with big bulky muscles. Plus I think steroids would slow you down in a sport like figure skating - you want to be small and light.
Can anyone explain the difference between an "Arabian", a "Butterfly", and a "Death Drop"? Visually I can recognize a death drop but no idea what the difference between a butterfly and arabian is.
I don't think her steroid use, if it's true, was really a huge advantage to her skating. This was figure skating, at a time when the jumps were not as huge or numerous as they are now (please don't get me wrong though; still VERY difficult). I just don't think steroid use would have made her footwork, spins, edging, or even jumping, all that better. Plus, there was no testing anywhere, so there could have been a lot more others doing it.
@mlc2005 Steroids completely would have benefited a skater, with the constant run thrus, and the stamina, the recovery and muscle memory. People who believe that steroids make you ripped or big (without doing the work..eg weights etc), are kidding themselves. But for your body to recovery and inable you to train more and do more, strength and stamina...

@claireshana u always accuses her for use of steroids but you can not proof it. so i can accuse you claishana takes Heroin.and i cannot proof it. you can accuse anyone in the internet because noone can take you on a courtroom.
and secondly: it called MfS ! not Stasi .
the MfS was the east german FBI. and the MfS never renovated any homes. and the FBI never build homes. yes she become alot money especially from westgerman advertising companies. and price money for all the goldmedals
you stupid american teen have no idea what the GDR was! you dont know what the MfS was. you know nothing about the GDR or the political system of any kind. your comments proof that.
a sportsmen cannot spy on sport events in other countrys! thats complete bullshit! what should he or she spying? how cold the water of the shower was?
@claireshana That doesn't change the fact that an athlete can hardly go against the orders or 'requests' made of her under a police state. She could or her relatives could just as easily been made to suffer. And those files, I don't care how many pages they are were not archived by Katarina Witt but by officials in a communist government. All may be truth-or fabrications. The FBI kept 'files' on John Lennon, and Martin Luther King Jr. So what? I certainly don't trust them.
@claireshana I doubt she had much choice in whether or not to 'cooperate' with the Stasi. My father spent 15 years as political prisoner in a dictatorship. There is no freedom under such governments.

@faeryquene in wich dictatorship was your father in prison? in fascist franco spain? or fascist greek? it cannot be a easteuropean country.evenfor the heaviest penaltys you become at maximum 3 years for propagandadelict.if he spend 15 years in prison the it was not a easteuropean country or he was guilty of a crime. and dont compare the GDR with a thirt world dictartorship installed by the CIA!

Katarina was a goddess and a true artist of the ice. Poetry in motion.

Wow Katarina Witt is such a beautiful teenager. I like this program better than her 1988 one.

This lady also made good comment of Yuna Kim. Would YUNA be the new legendary skater like her?

I'm done with you-you want to argue go ahead.
And who said I'm Eastern European? Or do you imagine in your ignorant world that dictatorships only existed in Eastern Europe?

Katarina Witt is very beautiful.

@safehaven11 absolutely ! Katarina was always the most beautiful skater. Great quality unmatched by any other skater. I really enjoyed it.
