I saw this great lady live twice at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, UK in the late 50s. Part of the Norman Granz promotion tour called Jazz at the Phil. What a singer. At her best then, I reckon. And what a privilege.
etta is pure talent that in this day and age can not be matched, she is amazing no matter what song she is doing. she is an icon and someone that should be recognized today
woopdi do she can make up gibberish on the spot quickly and sing like every other woman singer... BURT BACHARACH WROTE THE FUCKING SONG WILL ANYONE GIVE HIM THE RECOGNITION HE DESERVES? HE WROTE THIS SONG JUST SO PEOPLE COULD CHIT CHAT ABOUT THIS BITCH LIKE ITS ALL HER TALENT. WELL ITS NOT. HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR THE REAL MUSICIANS!!!!!
@schclum Get a fucking life you no talent cum guzzler! Show some fucking respect for this beaitiful artist. Burt gets his respect in the form of ROYALTY CHECKS! YOU DON'T SEE HIM COMPLAINING DO YOU? THAT'S BECAUSE ARTISTS DOING THEIR RENDITIONS OF HIS TUNES KEEP HIM P-A-I-D!!!!! SO SHUT THE FUCK UP AND CRAWL BACK UNDER THAT WET COW PATTY YOU LIVE AT. YOU DISRESPECTFUL LITTLE SPUNK BUCKET!!!
All you need to know about: tune; tempo; how to hold a microphone; how to not fuck up the orchestra; selection of song; scat; melody impro; lyrics impro; emotion; charisma; perfection.
ELLA FITZGERALD! "AMERICA'S FIRST LADY OF SONG." I think Ella sang this song in a soft intimate way, and this was her intent! I seriously won't second guess Ella ever nor compare her to anyone! She was incomparable! But I do ALSO love the very soulful version of this song by the great
Luther VanDross. That version was beautiful and amazing! It was one of Luther's greatest performances!!
This song was written specifically for Dionne's voice, but a great singer finds their own way through a song. That's what Sarah Vaughn did. That's what Luther did (the lyricist of this song, Hal David, favours Luther's rendition above all others). That's what Ella most definitely did. We are not talking about amatures. These names are some of the greatest singers that ever lived. And for me Ella is at the top of the list, but it doesn't mean that every rendition she did of a song is the 'best'.
@JustinBrava I have to agree mate and I'm a jazzer, Luther's take on this wonderful standard still brings a tear to my eye. Ella is great at it too but opinions are like arseholes......we all have one.
I LOVE Ella, and LOVE Luthar, but to be so .... rude? as to say this puts Luthar's version "in the Shade" ? you dont appreciate music or vocals... both are AMAZING in thier rendition.... but that just my 2 cents... spend it wisely...
Ella, and many Jazz Greats, will still be listened to and loved, for many years to come. Thanks for uploading this. Ella's version of the song is the best!
I have to say that Dionne MADE this song. Yes, Ella's great. Luther was good, Trinjnjte O. is fantastic -- but Dionne made them all her bitch. Everybody else uses too much embroidery; the music is too overpowering - there is just something wrong. But Ella is just so close, and Dionne hits it. 'Nuff said.
@raadiodaysyt Nonsense!!! I just listened to it. 40 seconds was all I take of her screeching. Sinatra said Ella was the greatest female singer of all time. Ella's name is always mentioned when real musicians rate the greatest singers. Warwick's is MOT. If you think you know more about singing and music than Frank Sinatra, then you belong in a mental institution.
Luther sounds like Luther. Ella Sounds like Ella. Dionne sounds like Dionne. Shirley sounds like Shirley. And they are all great singers. Each one of these singers will connect with everyone differently. None of them can sound like the other. And none of them will cover a song with the same emotion.
@brewepau i think burt bacharach has, seeing as it was his fucking genius that created the song just so that she could sing it at the front of the stage with the spotlight on her... but thats just my opinion.
Oh my god, this video disappeared a few years ago i think, and I've been looking for this version all over. Thanks so much for uploading it! She has a beautiful voice, but alas, that's an understatement. :)
Thank you, thank you for this . . Ella was superb here. I had saved another copy of this a few years ago, and it disappeared from this site. Absolute perfection!!!
Ive always loved Brook Benton's version of this record, but thank God for Ella covering it. Sung by the World's greatest singer. We will never see her like again.
@jonwiley hm i appreciate 'em both and am glad that those two badasses did this same song. Luther Vandross and Ella fitzgerald are absolutely incomparable. I'm sick of all this comparing people. Who CARES WHO DID IT BEST?! I wanna hear as many version as possible.
@PracticeMakesAwesome If you read my comment, you'd note I never mentioned superlatives. I stand by my opinon that Fitzgerald's rendition speaks to my heart. I don't have to hear umpteen renditions of a song or of any artistic performance to know what I like.
What a CLASS ACT !! These young singers need to listen to what real talent sounds like !!
Ella we love ya !
