Wow, Red's really off his game here. For one thing, he's one bar behind the band, thrown off by Roy's unsupportive explosion at the top of the first solo chorus (yes I said it, Roy laid a turd here). But even when he comes back in it's slipshod. Well, these schemes to put two guys on one vibraphone always fail anyway. Bareb0nes, your interpretation of Red's 'what the eff are we doing now' glances are precious! It's an epic fail: watch Red's I'm-getting-the-eff-off-this-stage exit!!!

Wait, that could be hilarious.
dragerger i think gary was pedalling durning the concerted passages. red rarely pedaled at all aside from one note, which he let ring for a measure.yes kvanoene not only was red norvo garys idol, but so many other emerging mallet players idolized him to, including my teacher gordon stout.the looks red gives to gary during this clip are those of excitement and encouragement and a willfull 'passing of the torch'' so to speak.priceless!
That is Jerry Hahn on guitar. He is one awesoem solist and it was a darn shame he didn't get a chance to sail! I've got some great ones of him posted in later years.
It's Danish. I believe he is saying something like: "We're about to experience a meeting of two generations in vibraphone jazz, namely Red Norvo and Gary Burton!"
Maybe he was! Who knows! ...I was just thinking how much i prefer the roy haynes of this era. I prefer his older drum sound. Although the bass drum is babdly mixed in this recording which is probably why Guruburu82 thought the drumming was too much.
So you haven't heard much Norvo, eh? I'm wondering why Burton is holding double mallets, since Norvo was the first to do it, I believe. Check out Norvo and his trio of the 50s--with Charlie Mingus and Tal Farlow. Compare Norvo's version of Move with Burton's, while with Hank Garland.
No. Norvo is Burton's idol. Norvo was a famouse xylo player who pioneered four mallet technique. Burton picked up on his style which is now known as Burton grip. Norvo is being polite. Watch some of Norvo's solo stuff and you will understand.
I never realized Gary Burton was such a classy dresser.

Gary Burton is laight years ahead of Red Norvo. I know he was very famous but still the difference in the two is astounding.
