The way the guy goes to pin the snake down at the beginning makes it look like he is acting for the spectators - there's something about this accident which screams show-off to me...
George Van Horn knows exactly what he is doing, he is the director of one of the oldest venom extraction facilities in the U.S. There is no show off at all in the video, it was purely an accident and he practices with safety in the hind sight as all venom extractor's do. Everyone works differently in this line of work, its what works best for them and what is comfortable. There is no book you can go buy at Barnes and Noble to teach you techniques on venom extraction. You have to come
up with your own and learn from your mistakes. When you do learn from your mistakes, you will not get bit that exact same way again...trust me, there are numerous accidents to have when it comes with venomous snakes and its within the blink of an eye.
watch the bite carefully, the snake actually just cocks a fang out and stabs his thumb, i wonder if this means the snake learned this from being restrained and milked so many times
Ouch. Poor guy. Luckily they probably have anti-venom on hand for accidents like that. And to all you haters, you'll all be grateful when you have anti-venom available to you when you get bit while you're out camping because of people like this.

He just lost his handle on the snake for a split second and thats all it takes. He followed protocol perfectly, isolate snake to prevent further injury to others and seek medical attention immediately! Hopefully he didn't sustain any long term damage to his hand.
it sucks the man was bitten. He is trying to milk the snake. Usually they milk them to get the venom to either make anti-venom, or for other health purposes.
@Lyvetacus Corruption is SOLELY and ENTIRELY based on money. To make it simple for your thick skull. THERR WOULD BE NO REASON FOR CORRUPTION, CRIME AND GREED IF MONEY DID NOT EXIST. I'm sorry if you find that insulting but it is not human nature to be greedy. Maybe you won't be so "morally" strong once you have your own bills to pay or family to feed. Tell your parents to read everythig I've written. They will agree with me 100%.
@Lyvetacus Lol my argument is backed up by fact. You don't go to school, do you? I'm glad you've decided to call it quits. I was getting bored arguing with an idiotic kid who doesn't even know the difference between "your" and "you're". Everything I've said is documented as fact in soiology and any education institution.
@Lyvetacus Oh yeah? You know if they didn't do that you would already be dead from the lack of medicine that is available to you? Idiot. The snake wasn't hurt one bit. Be a human, all life are equal.
@emilm lol...play with fire and your going to get burned. Do you think the snake had any say in being contained in a box or domesticated? Of course not. I know the snake wasn't hurt, it was the one doing the hurting-- learn sarcasm, jackass. All life is equal, why disregard the snake's life? Go fuck yourself. TY.
@Lyvetacus Yeah, but he's not playing with fire. He's doing that for science/medicine. It's viewable by an audience to show other possible future herpetologists the process+increase support and funding for their research/work so progress for science/medicine can increase.
@Lyvetacus How is the snake's life disregarded? It's put in a completely humane environment under perfect conditions, weather, temperature, given sufficient food and water where they are completely free from predators. That's a fair trade off for a few ml's of venom every once in a while. No need to get angry and hostile. You learn something new every day, so be happy :)
@emilm Lol! thats like saying... the conditions the Chinese communist government give the people of China is fair because they aren't dying or getting shot at. And the limited amount of freedom that they have makes the actions of the government justified. Just because the conditions of the situation seem better to you does not make them better for the animal. Ignorance deserves hostility-- yours is well deserved. Who says i'm not happy? I'm watching a man get bitten by a snake.
@Lyvetacus What? Chinese people aren't being treated badly by their government lolol. I think you're confusing North Korea with China? lol... I won't continue discussing this because you've just shown the world how dumb you really are.
@emilm No i mean china. Idiot. North Korea would be a much more extreme example. I don't think you know anything about politics or you would know how corrupt their Government actually is. Its sad-- when people pretend to know the full context of a situation.
@Lyvetacus So, you're only argument to what I said is that "China is a corrupt communist country"? It is true that China is run by the communist party, however, they have one of the most capitalistic monetary practices in the world (hence Shanghai). Communism does not mean corruption. In fact, the ideology of communism goes strongly against the very act of corruption. Corruption exists because there is an incentive for it. This incentive is created by what you call the MONETARY SYSTEM
@Lyvetacus With that said, under the surface, the "corruption" of China is no more than the corruption of most other western nations. What determines the extent and ratio of corruption is the country's monetary influence and wealth. With that being said, please do not ever pretend to know the full context of ANY situation ever again before you embarrass yourself any further :)
@emilm Haha, its not entirely about what system they have, it is about who controls the system. The leader who wields the power in China has omnipotence over all laws, institutions, individuals, beliefs and freedoms etc.... What determines the corruption in a country is the person(s) who make(s) the rules. The person who makes the rules in China is the person who does not abide by them. China is far more corrupt than any western nation because the leader has a freedom separate from his people.
@emilm If you've ever read and understood history you would know that what determines a country's power is not only their wealth but their military size. Countries do not wage war on other countries that have a smaller standing army, even with outstanding military tactics or equipment. I never said i knew the context of a situation, but you made it seem like you did. Jerk! :)
@Lyvetacus Yes, and military size is not accomplished with wealth............ Please get out of here, really, it pains me to see someone as dumb as you.
@Lyvetacus Yes, countries will always wage war on other countries with a smaller standing army. I suggest you go back to those "history" books you speak of.
@emilm Your argument is weak. All your saying is that the incentive for corruption is money. People who are morally strong would see that as an insult. The fact that you think corruption can be measured by a country's wealth/monetary influence is absurd. Your argument translates to all countries who have great wealth have been or are corrupt. I hope you get bitten by a snake. Bye now! :)
@bigredfighting the human can become immune to snake venom some handlers inject small amounts of venom over time and when they get bit the affects are minimum like minor tissue damage apposed to respiratory failure, cardiac arrest etc.If their body's are immune to rattler venom and then they get bitten by a cobra then it wont work.
That be the last time he milks my fangs again, just his luck he gets bit by a rattler those snakes have very toxic venom I'm sure he has anti venom in the back
@bigredfighting101 tell that to dr. bill haast, they used his blood to save 21 people. Dr ray hunter has also had his blood drawn and tested because he has developed immunities/resistances to many snake venoms through self induced immunization shots of snake venoms.
Wrong, "Soon after opening the Serpentarium Haast began experimenting with building up an acquired immunity to the venom of King, Indian and Cape cobras by injecting himself with gradually increasing quantities of venom he had extracted from his snakes, a practice called mithridatism. Mithridatization has been tried with success in Australia and Brazil and total immunity has been achieved even to multiple bites of extremely venomous cobras and pit vipers."--Wikipedia
@GnatTwo I've used Wikipedia for years, never had a single problem. Wikipedia has been proven to be as accurate as any printed encyclopedia. I'm sure if I looked many other websites would say exactly the same thing. I'm not going to call the Serpentarium on the telephone. Wikipedia is accurate enough for me.
i know that man...i read a book about vipers and it mention him in the book, it said he been bitten 160 times during his life and been making antivenom for 50 years, and his body been geting use to being bitten so the body started making its own antibody, it was pretty cool to me
Animal rights activists are the ones that belong in a small dark cage. The venom this guy extracts every day is diluted, injected into sheep, and the sheep produce antibodies that are extracted and refined into antivenom, which saves the lives of countless children every year. Anyone who thinks that's a bad trade is not human.
I questioned this by the way they were handling the snake and when they were moving around so much with the rattler in their hands. I thing it was carelessness. Handling just looked unsafe from the beginning..
@dondee500k u kidding? lol defuse a bomb wrong and make a mistake and u die but with handling venomous snakes even if u mess up , u still can live lol its called anti venom
He was milking the snake to get the venom is used to make anti-ventom and shipped to hospitals to save the lives of snake-bite victoms who were bitten in the wild.
@davidallenroth He's trying to save peoples lives..... I hope that you or one of your loved ones never get bitten by a snake. Even something like hiking can pose a risk to a deadly bite...
This is sad,I see so many idiots on here that are being stupid w snakes and the man risking his life to save them gets bitten,I sincerly hope he is ok :-(
@XFreedomPrimeX When you get cancer you'll be thanking this guy for extracting venom for attempting to find a cure for diseases. Think about it, you could get cancer and someone who extracts venom could be the person who saves your life. They don't keep snakes just for showing off and thinking they're being cruel to them. They do it for research in curing diseases.
@Djinnhydra Sorry to tell you but there's no cure for cancer. We could cut down on our cancer rates by 50% if we reduced emissions, everybody stopped smoking, and we cut red meat out of our diet. The japanese actually have a very good cancer rate. And then look over here in america we're all fat, smoke and eat synthetic foods. Go figure.
Also you could not be more far off, snake venom has nothing to do with cancer research.
@ScopedPewPew First of all. You don't know what scientists are capable of. They can find a cure for cancer if they really try for it. There's cures for cancer already. They aren't for the really bad cancer like lung cancer or brain cancer or anything like that. Testicular cancer and a few others have a cure. People like this man and lots of others try every day extracting venom for research on diseases not just cancer but others aswell.
@Djinnhydra Oh really, there's documented cures for cancer? Please provide me with some evidence... Be it websites, or medical journals, etc. There's a difference between treatment and cures, just for your information.
@Djinnhydra Also, I'm curious about which disesases they use snake venom to try to cure. I'm interested, give me websites or something else so that I may read them.
@ScopedPewPew I'm not sure what websites you can go to but if you Google them I'm sure you can find it. I know they use Rattlesnake venom and Black mamba venom for research on a cure for Malaria and a few other big diseases aswell.
@ScopedPewPew Just looking at some of the comments and came across this silly one of yours. SOME cancers CAN be treated and cured. I see your ignorance continues in that you think snake venom isn't used in cancer research. It actually is. Look it up sometime. There are many articles indicating how snake venom may slow cancer growth. Proteins in snake venom may attack breast cancer cells. Venom from a copperhead can halt the migration of metastatic tumors. Try reading sometime.
@Soulrider2012 Treated and cured? The only way to "Cure" cancer is by either poisoning it, cutting it out, or radiating it. Also, your examples are treatments, not cures.
@StormCloudsGathering Those are treatments, not cures. Again, the only way to cure cancer is by poisoning it, cutting it out, or radiating it. Our methods on how to do each have improved greatly, but those are the only ways.
@fuckvegan So you're saying if you got bit by an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, you'd be like uh-oh, got bit by a venomous snake, let's take a field trip to the hospital! No, you'd be freaking out too, people have died from these snakes and they're no joke.
Well this will teach people to stop fucking round with dangerous animals, leave them in the wild and they won't bother you, Fuck sake they got a life to you know!!!!!!!
I've watched the 'bite' section over and over and over, and still do not see any bite take place. The rattler's fangs never get close enough to the guy's finger to bite him.
@PianoDaemon Look at around 0:37. The snake bends his head back just enough to nip him below the fingertip. It doesn't look like he had time to invenomate him, but the snake deffinatly bit him cause you can see how he bends back just enough to bend his fang down and bite him.
just watching the body language of these two professionals will show how dangerous is their work and how careful they try to be in handling the deadly snakes inspite of which he still got bitten. he may have placed a finger under the head of the snake too close and loose enough for its head to dip its fangs into it.
@matthewlovesbritney Are you seriously that ignorant? Do you know why these people risk there lives doing this? Well obviously not. I could understand your comment if these guys were out in the woods harassing animals, But there not. They take very good care of these animals to collect some of there venom for research on cancer cures, and anti-venom if someone happens to get bit by a venomous snake.
@BelialAndar Yes i do know that but i just dont think its right for them to do that! I mean how would you like it if some idiot got hold of you in a way you dont like and started milking you? Sorry but these animals are not pets, they are wild and they should stay in the wild.
@matthewlovesbritney They are not pets in this situation to begin with, that's one thing you don't understand apparently. I hope you get bit by a venomous snake and there is no anti-venom around, Or you come down with a cancer that snake venom could help cure or reduce the effect of it. If I have to be uncomfortable for a few minutes for something greater it would not bother me.
he holds the snake in the wrong position that's why the fang still reached his finger, i mean he's doing this maybe for decades but why did he make simple mistake like that?
"Pet Rattle Snake" Since when does a deadly animal become a pet? We should be giving you shyt for being stupid. I give you a 10 for being one of the planets most stupid people.

@Lyvetacus Yes, countries will always wage war on other countries with a smaller standing army. I suggest you go back to those "history" books you speak of.
emilm 2 months ago
@emilm Your argument is weak. All your saying is that the incentive for corruption is money. People who are morally strong would see that as an insult. The fact that you think corruption can be measured by a country's wealth/monetary influence is absurd. Your argument translates to all countries who have great wealth have been or are corrupt. I hope you get bitten by a snake. Bye now! :)

i hope that guys okay!

@bigredfighting the human can become immune to snake venom some handlers inject small amounts of venom over time and when they get bit the affects are minimum like minor tissue damage apposed to respiratory failure, cardiac arrest etc.If their body's are immune to rattler venom and then they get bitten by a cobra then it wont work.

anyone else claiming to be an expert with venomous snakes needs to see this. So-called expert + Rattlesnake = OWNED.
DawgcityClev 3 months ago
@xBabyfreezex wrong the body will not make its own anti-venom or become immune to any snake venom
bigredfighting101 3 months ago 7
@bigredfighting101 tell that to dr. bill haast, they used his blood to save 21 people. Dr ray hunter has also had his blood drawn and tested because he has developed immunities/resistances to many snake venoms through self induced immunization shots of snake venoms.
SneakySneakygrow 1 month ago

Wikipedia is accurate enough for me.

i know that man...i read a book about vipers and it mention him in the book, it said he been bitten 160 times during his life and been making antivenom for 50 years, and his body been geting use to being bitten so the body started making its own antibody, it was pretty cool to me
xBabyfreezex 3 months ago
Animal rights activists are the ones that belong in a small dark cage. The venom this guy extracts every day is diluted, injected into sheep, and the sheep produce antibodies that are extracted and refined into antivenom, which saves the lives of countless children every year. Anyone who thinks that's a bad trade is not human.

I questioned this by the way they were handling the snake and when they were moving around so much with the rattler in their hands. I thing it was carelessness. Handling just looked unsafe from the beginning..

Djinnhydra 4 months ago
@Djinnhydra Sorry to tell you but there's no cure for cancer. We could cut down on our cancer rates by 50% if we reduced emissions, everybody stopped smoking, and we cut red meat out of our diet. The japanese actually have a very good cancer rate. And then look over here in america we're all fat, smoke and eat synthetic foods. Go figure.
Also you could not be more far off, snake venom has nothing to do with cancer research.
ScopedPewPew 4 months ago
@ScopedPewPew First of all. You don't know what scientists are capable of. They can find a cure for cancer if they really try for it. There's cures for cancer already. They aren't for the really bad cancer like lung cancer or brain cancer or anything like that. Testicular cancer and a few others have a cure. People like this man and lots of others try every day extracting venom for research on diseases not just cancer but others aswell.
Djinnhydra 4 months ago
@Djinnhydra Oh really, there's documented cures for cancer? Please provide me with some evidence... Be it websites, or medical journals, etc. There's a difference between treatment and cures, just for your information.
ScopedPewPew 4 months ago
@Djinnhydra Also, I'm curious about which disesases they use snake venom to try to cure. I'm interested, give me websites or something else so that I may read them.
ScopedPewPew 4 months ago
@ScopedPewPew I'm not sure what websites you can go to but if you Google them I'm sure you can find it. I know they use Rattlesnake venom and Black mamba venom for research on a cure for Malaria and a few other big diseases aswell.
Djinnhydra 4 months ago
@ScopedPewPew Hey, dumbass how about anti venom. Saves countless lives every yr!
sonex424 3 months ago
@sonex424 Anti-venom has it's own dangers.
SepherStar 3 months ago
@ScopedPewPew Just looking at some of the comments and came across this silly one of yours. SOME cancers CAN be treated and cured. I see your ignorance continues in that you think snake venom isn't used in cancer research. It actually is. Look it up sometime. There are many articles indicating how snake venom may slow cancer growth. Proteins in snake venom may attack breast cancer cells. Venom from a copperhead can halt the migration of metastatic tumors. Try reading sometime.
Soulrider2012 1 month ago
@Soulrider2012 Treated and cured? The only way to "Cure" cancer is by either poisoning it, cutting it out, or radiating it. Also, your examples are treatments, not cures.
ScopedPewPew 1 month ago
@ScopedPewPew - That is highly out dated information you are propagating. Those kinds of treatments are crude and ineffective. watch?v=S81PXHwjMAQ
StormCloudsGathering 1 month ago
@StormCloudsGathering Those are treatments, not cures. Again, the only way to cure cancer is by poisoning it, cutting it out, or radiating it. Our methods on how to do each have improved greatly, but those are the only ways.

ETERNALTEXAN 5 months ago
I've watched the 'bite' section over and over and over, and still do not see any bite take place. The rattler's fangs never get close enough to the guy's finger to bite him.
PianoDaemon 5 months ago
@PianoDaemon I think it bit thru its own lower jaw. Ive seen on TV where they could do that
mrznwalker 4 months ago
@PianoDaemon Look at around 0:37. The snake bends his head back just enough to nip him below the fingertip. It doesn't look like he had time to invenomate him, but the snake deffinatly bit him cause you can see how he bends back just enough to bend his fang down and bite him.
Djinnhydra 4 months ago
just watching the body language of these two professionals will show how dangerous is their work and how careful they try to be in handling the deadly snakes inspite of which he still got bitten. he may have placed a finger under the head of the snake too close and loose enough for its head to dip its fangs into it.
goerizal 5 months ago
And thats what happens when they cant even leave the animal alone!
matthewlovesbritney 5 months ago
@matthewlovesbritney Are you seriously that ignorant? Do you know why these people risk there lives doing this? Well obviously not. I could understand your comment if these guys were out in the woods harassing animals, But there not. They take very good care of these animals to collect some of there venom for research on cancer cures, and anti-venom if someone happens to get bit by a venomous snake.
BelialAndar 5 months ago
@BelialAndar Yes i do know that but i just dont think its right for them to do that! I mean how would you like it if some idiot got hold of you in a way you dont like and started milking you? Sorry but these animals are not pets, they are wild and they should stay in the wild.
matthewlovesbritney 5 months ago
@matthewlovesbritney i wouldnt mind someone milking me hahaha
SGVliverSHOT626 5 months ago
@SGVliverSHOT626 LOL
matthewlovesbritney 5 months ago
@matthewlovesbritney They are not pets in this situation to begin with, that's one thing you don't understand apparently. I hope you get bit by a venomous snake and there is no anti-venom around, Or you come down with a cancer that snake venom could help cure or reduce the effect of it. If I have to be uncomfortable for a few minutes for something greater it would not bother me.
BelialAndar 5 months ago
@matthewlovesbritney No, this is what happens when you need to milk snakes because other people can't leave the snakes alone...
