To add on that he seems to not know much about the founding fathers. History is not as black & white as he thinks. Many of them laid the foundation for the slaves to be ultimately free'd. There are many writings of them speaking out against slavery. Washington free'd his slaves in his will. He couldn't free them while alive because they believed in the idea of property rights (Human Rights & Political rights were seen seperately) some slaves belonged to his wife. It was indeed a different time.

True they had slaves, but they were not inconsistent with their message when you put into context that Africans were not considered men in the colloquial sense, but less evolved, and practically a different specie. Granted IN THIS DAY AND AGE, we would find those ideas reprehensible and detestable, but if you lived in that era, the thought may have never occurred to you.

I wasn't alive during the civil war and neither were you, so we have no idea, all we can do is speculate...I'm 99.9% sure I would have opposed slavery..treating people like animals would not have ever seemed good to me

I can speculate based on evidence that every other industrialized society abolished slavery without a war that killed 600,000. But that's neither here nor there.

Its easy to say you would have opposed slavery, isn't it. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, I'm sure. The truth is that you can't honestly say what your common assumptions would have been back then, because NOW you have the benefit of an extra 250 years of progressive thought. They didn't.

Of course if I transplanted my current self into 1770, I would advocate against slavery, and I would be one of a fraction of a fraction of people who could make that argument, BUT if I had grown up with it as an accepted practice, would I have accepted it too? Probably.

In 1980 you would have probably thought only gay people and drug users could contract AIDS.
