They are good games, but are overrated. If you played PC games like Quake or Doom before Halo, you could see how generic Halo is. Final Fantasy VI is WAY better than VII. While i love these game alot, they arent the best. I also would include Gears of War and Fable in that list as well.
For Halo you're forgetting how amazingly integrated and seamless vehicular combat was, how huge the environments were, how it was one of the first FPSs with an actual decent storyline, how it popularized only being able to hold two weapons at a time and most importantly, how it felt as an evolution of FPSs as a whole.
If you play Unreal Tournament which had only been released two years prior and on the dominant FPS system at the time (PC) and then play Halo, you'll see what I'm talking about.
I agree with FF7, but Halo: CE influenced a hell of a lot more than Zelda: OFT. Halo: CE might not be as good as now compared to other games like Half-Life 2, but it was THE fps game of the decade, and it was the second (right behind the first Half-Life) to tell and actually compelling story and it does have a huge amount of backstory.
I think the most overrated games of all time today are Mario, Zelda, FF, COD and Gears of War.
I personally have not played FF7 and I hope that it does get a PS3 remake because it doesn't look appealing to play as of now. And I've grown up with the Ocarina of Time and as nostalgic as this game is, it fucking sucks....I don't know what people are thinking about when they say it's great. I was also, so very pissed that they didn't add anything for the 3DS version, maybe a survival mode or something!? not the boring boss battles! and maybe some 4 on 4 minigames? Or PVP adventure or co-op.

Halo is most definatly not overated, the musical score is mind-blowing, the story and universe is both intriging and engaging, the halo games go soo far beyond gameplay, it dwelves into back-story's and and allows players to experiance much more then just blasting aliens, it draws you into the story, it tangles with your emotions, you acturally feel the emotions and relationships between characters.
The reason why Halo is soo populer is not because of the gameplay and the experiance
the CoD series. at first it was good, and still is a good FPS, but its the hype that always gets to me, about any game. its not that "not liking it" makes it overrated, its when fans over-hype and when game makers over produce the same material. videogames of course being a high profit product these days it makes sense of why it works that way. yes a fan of a game series is always looking for the the next big part of their favorite game, but often they get too excited about something repetitive.

IX is great, one of my favourites but I just finished replaying both and its not as good, reading the story isn't enough, VII gradually paces releasing info
HALO, yep... When it came out i was just switching from console to PC gaming. I played counter strike and battlefield 1942 and just saw nothing appealing about it... It was slow, had no real design, and was nothing new for that day and age. FF7 I agree I think there is some correlation between anime lovers and FF7 you hears so much "OMG BEST EVER"

No doubt ff7 was an excellent game, but falls short for me if you compare it to predecessors ff4, 6, and even its contemporary ff tactics. The cast, character development and story of 4,6 and tactics was far supreme than 7. Kefka? Ramza and Delita? FF7's cast generally annoyed me, Sephy's had some real mommy problems, but thats the story. 7 is generally labeled overrated because it was probably the first FF title most people in America played. Ocarina of Time put me to sleep. Halo is okay.

Haven't gotten around to playing OoT yet, though that'll change in the near future. Regarding FF7: I played FF4 (2) before I played 7, and loved 4. I didn't play 7 until 2004, long after many better looking games had come out, and I was 16 by then, so it isn't the nostalgia talking when I say it's among the best games ever made.

Have you tried this PC game call Unreal? Its a game made by the same makers of Gears of War back in the 1990's introducing the Unreal Engine graphics and has a small sequel, as well as the tournament series. It has a AWSOME atmosphere to it once when you first play it.
The first Halo was great, second was good too, third was ok, wars was boring and hard, ODST was boring, reach's campaign was dissapointing, and now for halo 4.

I prefer FF8, but I thought 7 had a decent story behind it. It was kind of hard to feel anything about the characters though. Halo is said to have "revolutionized" FPS games on the console.. but outside of that it's not great. I've played much better FPS games on the PC. Quake 2 multiplayer was addictive. So was Half-Life Team Fortress.
Most overrated games out there is COD (every one of those shitty games), Pokemon (the games aren't bad, but they don't deserve the ratings they get and the popularity it gets since the fanbase is filled with annoying 10 year old faggots), and pretty much most Nintendo games. Halo is not really that overrated since it revolutionized FPS on consoles and introduced one of the most kick ass multiplayers out there.

Personally I find GTA4 immensely overrated. The missions were imo repetitive as hell and mucking around in the city is fun for say 10 hours, but then the game turns dull. It did not extraordinary at all and most likely got hig hreviews due to the "GTA" name.

That "fanbase" is definetely the worst one because you say a bad aspect about FFVII and you instantly get hate mail or stuff. In MY opinion, as a Final Fantasy fan, XIII is the best one. FFVII "fans" praise FFVII because of its storyline, but the actual gameplay is boring and...well, the graphics suck, even for its time.

I agree that Ocarina of Time is overrated. It's gameplay is just really average and as an action adventure game, sure it's fun i guess, but there are so many better games with more involving/original content/ideas like Banjo Kazooie and Conker, which also had FAR better graphics (another thing, Ocarina's graphics were HORRIBLE compared to other n64 games). Sure basically everyone buys it, but really how many of those ppl have that game even on their top 10 list, not many. I agree that Halo is way overrated, the multiplayer was epic at the time but I always get bored playing Halo these days and always have gotten bored playing campaign. I disagree about FF7, that's my favorite game of all time.
As for Zelda OOT, I think it's slightly overrated. Majora's Mask was a MUCH better game but OOT was and still is awesome.

Personally, I feel that Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are really overrated. Call of Duty is basically a knock-off of Medal of Honor, and GTA is fun to play but each game is the same old thing. As for FF7 I think you should've looked at the story a bit more because that's where the game's selling point is.

@McScreamo I have to disagree. I think most of their games, the ones you mention included, weren't thst good. I like Galaxy's levels and Twilight Princess, that's it. Formulas have to change sooner or later. Sonic the Hedgehog, Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon changed. Metal Gear stayed close to it's roots, but still changed very much. Many franchises have changed and innovated their gameplay. Shouldn't that be applauded? I mean, who wants to play repeats of the same game?
I actually agree with you. Halo WAS one hell of an overrated game. I personally didn't even enjoy it that much. As to Final Fantasy VII, as much as I adore the game, the game only really shone in its original context. I still enjoy playing it today, and it was a major landmark in the evolution of the RPG, but you are right about it being overrated. Considering the hype that game gets even today, I don't think any game could live up to that.
As for what I find overrated, pretty much every other game to come out this generation. But more specifically:
Bioshock: System Shock 2 with a facelift. Unbalanced and shallow gameplay and a recycled story. Not a bad game, but calling it a "innovative" or a "masterpiece" is disingenuous when SS2 did everything it did but better.
Fallout 3: A buggy, dull, unbalanced, padded, and poorly designed Skinner Box that wishes it was as good as Fallout 1. Or maybe in your case it's a ssskinner box? :P
NITPICK TIME! Eddie Riggs in Brutal Legend is part demon, so if you're looking for a plot justification for why his health regenerates, there it is.
I think you're mixing up overrated with dated. For better or for worse, Halo defined console FPS's for the next decade. It had some of the best vehicular controls to be found in a shooter, huge environments and scale, and a story that was a cut above that of other shooters. I'm not a huge fan of Halo, but I don't think it's fair to deny its impact.

halo is definitely overrated. I would play it at my friends house and i always thought it was kinda boring. I'd still rather play goldeneye or perfect dark. Ocarina of time is weird because it was so amazing when it was released but for it to so consistently top best games lists was a little too much and hinted at it being overrated. I actually think in the long run A link to the past is a better game.
@dman519 I think OoT holds up very well for a 13 year old game. It's certainly not my all time favorite, but it's still my favorite in the series (haven't played ALttP so you might be right there). I find the subsequent games have progressively suffered more and more from poor pacing that wasn't present in OoT, and a lot of the Zelda formula has gotten really stale like the story, the items, the locations etc. But when OoT was first released it was pretty damn epic.

I would just say OOt and MM are my fav 3D with a slight edge to MM, and ALttp and LA are my fav 2D. And yes the last good zelda game was MM. WW was just OK(crappy dungeons) and TP just sucked.

The older games dungeons had a difficulty in combat and puzzles that WW and TP seriously lacked. The formula is stale, but if the busywork and dungeons have more depth I dont think it would matter.

@Youkickmydog1988 I agree that games need a coherent narrative otherwise there's no incentive to succeed; my problem is when games go too far either way. Earthbound and by extension Mother 3 are two of my favourite games in this regard, as are games like Heavy Rain and Dreamfall, because one feels like they actually have an effect on the story. I don't like when it feels like I'm just shoving a character between hour-long cutscenes and not affecting anything.

I really loved both games. At the time FFVII looked great, had a wonderful soundtrack, and a great story. I've tried playing it again and couldn't believe how dated it seemed. I would love a remake if for nothing else a modern nostalgia trip. As for Halo I think that it was so fun because the graphics were crisp and the controls were tight. More so than the campaign mode, it's multiplayer was truly addicting. I think Halo really got it's name from it's multiplayer experience.
The Call of Duty series is probably the most over rated series in existence in my mind. They aren't 'bad' games.. but they are incredibly boring. I don't understand the fascination, and with every new incarnation I feel such an over powering sense of Deja-Vu.
As a follow-up post, my most overrated game (well, really, a series) is the Metal Gear Solid franchise. It seems as though it can't decide whether to be silly or serious and comes across as trying too hard. I've tried on multiple occasions to play various iterations of it and have never found myself making any progress due to the irritating and needlessly drawn-out cutscenes, poor writing and awkward controls.
I'll agree with you on both games. I've never truly enjoyed any Final Fantasy games apart from IX and XII; even then only because they shook up the formula. I found Halo to be dull and awkward to control with a contrived story.

I personally have not played FF7 and I hope that it does get a PS3 remake because it doesn't look appealing to play as of now. And I've grown up with the Ocarina of Time and as nostalgic as this game is, it fucking sucks....I don't know what people are thinking about when they say it's great. I was also, so very pissed that they didn't add anything for the 3DS version, maybe a survival mode or something!? not the boring boss battles! and maybe some 4 on 4 minigames? Or PVP adventure or co-op.

Halo is most definatly not overated, the musical score is mind-blowing, the story and universe is both intriging and engaging, the halo games go soo far beyond gameplay, it dwelves into back-story's and and allows players to experiance much more then just blasting aliens, it draws you into the story, it tangles with your emotions, you acturally feel the emotions and relationships between characters.

the CoD series. at first it was good, and still is a good FPS, but its the hype that always gets to me, about any game. its not that "not liking it" makes it overrated, its when fans over-hype and when game makers over produce the same material. videogames of course being a high profit product these days it makes sense of why it works that way. yes a fan of a game series is always looking for the the next big part of their favorite game, but often they get too excited about something repetitive.

IX is great, one of my favourites but I just finished replaying both and its not as good, reading the story isn't enough, VII gradually paces releasing info

HALO, yep... When it came out i was just switching from console to PC gaming. I played counter strike and battlefield 1942 and just saw nothing appealing about it... It was slow, had no real design, and was nothing new for that day and age. FF7 I agree I think there is some correlation between anime lovers and FF7 you hears so much "OMG BEST EVER"
but then you sit and play it, and it's really not what they make it.

No doubt ff7 was an excellent game, but falls short for me if you compare it to predecessors ff4, 6, and even its contemporary ff tactics. The cast, character development and story of 4,6 and tactics was far supreme than 7. Kefka? Ramza and Delita? FF7's cast generally annoyed me, Sephy's had some real mommy problems, but thats the story. 7 is generally labeled overrated because it was probably the first FF title most people in America played. Ocarina of Time put me to sleep. Halo is okay.

Haven't gotten around to playing OoT yet, though that'll change in the near future. Regarding FF7: I played FF4 (2) before I played 7, and loved 4. I didn't play 7 until 2004, long after many better looking games had come out, and I was 16 by then, so it isn't the nostalgia talking when I say it's among the best games ever made.

I prefer FF8, but I thought 7 had a decent story behind it. It was kind of hard to feel anything about the characters though. Halo is said to have "revolutionized" FPS games on the console.. but outside of that it's not great. I've played much better FPS games on the PC. Quake 2 multiplayer was addictive. So was Half-Life Team Fortress.

Good video, I agree with most of it (except Halo, but htats more because the only reason its called "genric" is because it spawned so many carbon copy FPSes after it came out) and you express said opinions articulately.
Personally I find GTA4 immensely overrated. The missions were imo repetitive as hell and mucking around in the city is fun for say 10 hours, but then the game turns dull. It did not extraordinary at all and most likely got hig hreviews due to the "GTA" name.

I agree that Ocarina of Time is overrated. It's gameplay is just really average and as an action adventure game, sure it's fun i guess, but there are so many better games with more involving/original content/ideas like Banjo Kazooie and Conker, which also had FAR better graphics (another thing, Ocarina's graphics were HORRIBLE compared to other n64 games). Sure basically everyone buys it, but really how many of those ppl have that game even on their top 10 list, not many. I agree that Halo is way overrated, the multiplayer was epic at the time but I always get bored playing Halo these days and always have gotten bored playing campaign. I disagree about FF7, that's my favorite game of all time.
As for Zelda OOT, I think it's slightly overrated. Majora's Mask was a MUCH better game but OOT was and still is awesome.

FF7 is my favorite game but i admit it is overrated i dont have a problem with the graphics if you played that game in 1997 trust me the graphics wouldve amazed you im a devoted FF7 fan but i respect your opinions & i agree its overrated.

but the reason why i want ff7 to be remade on the ps3 is because square has remade alot of the final fantasy games and all they did for 7 is make a poorly made movie and spin offs
i think ff7 would cool if they kept the same storyline and script and game play and just made it with better graphics and maybe a few more side quests for the fans

Its getting old people saying oot is overrated, its not for obvious reasons i wont explain, but the point is, is their a single game in this world that could be considered the greatest game in the world and not have a bunch of people hating on the answer is no, oot is the only game that deserves that title besides maybe super mario bros since it saved gaming, but thats it!

Personally, I feel that Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are really overrated. Call of Duty is basically a knock-off of Medal of Honor, and GTA is fun to play but each game is the same old thing. As for FF7 I think you should've looked at the story a bit more because that's where the game's selling point is.

atleast somebody isn't afraid to admit there are such things as overrated games, even if they r super popular...so i'm going to add in my opinion, the legend of zelda ocarina of time and twilight princess, and all of the call of duty, halo, and final fantasy games. i'm sorry, not saying they r bad, just a bit overrated.

@McScreamo I can agree. But I would also add Legend of Zelda and Mario to the list. They get so much prasie, but don't do much in terms of changing the formula. At least on Mario's part. Zelda just doesn't interest me.

@vgman94 you know they really weren't meant to change up the formula. they are what they are and will always stay the same. although by graphics terms i can i guess see your point but other than that they are their own franchise. though both get too much fans for only a few near perfect games in the series. SMB3 + SMW + SMRPG + Zelda: Link to the past + Oracle of Seasons. those really are the only great games.

@McScreamo I have to disagree. I think most of their games, the ones you mention included, weren't thst good. I like Galaxy's levels and Twilight Princess, that's it. Formulas have to change sooner or later. Sonic the Hedgehog, Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon changed. Metal Gear stayed close to it's roots, but still changed very much. Many franchises have changed and innovated their gameplay. Shouldn't that be applauded? I mean, who wants to play repeats of the same game?

I actually agree with you. Halo WAS one hell of an overrated game. I personally didn't even enjoy it that much. As to Final Fantasy VII, as much as I adore the game, the game only really shone in its original context. I still enjoy playing it today, and it was a major landmark in the evolution of the RPG, but you are right about it being overrated. Considering the hype that game gets even today, I don't think any game could live up to that.

As for what I find overrated, pretty much every other game to come out this generation. But more specifically:
Bioshock: System Shock 2 with a facelift. Unbalanced and shallow gameplay and a recycled story. Not a bad game, but calling it a "innovative" or a "masterpiece" is disingenuous when SS2 did everything it did but better.
Fallout 3: A buggy, dull, unbalanced, padded, and poorly designed Skinner Box that wishes it was as good as Fallout 1. Or maybe in your case it's a ssskinner box? :P

NITPICK TIME! Eddie Riggs in Brutal Legend is part demon, so if you're looking for a plot justification for why his health regenerates, there it is.
I think you're mixing up overrated with dated. For better or for worse, Halo defined console FPS's for the next decade. It had some of the best vehicular controls to be found in a shooter, huge environments and scale, and a story that was a cut above that of other shooters. I'm not a huge fan of Halo, but I don't think it's fair to deny its impact.

Final Fantasy 7 is overrated because of those overused cheesy love scenes and dramatical tragic scenes.

halo is definitely overrated. I would play it at my friends house and i always thought it was kinda boring. I'd still rather play goldeneye or perfect dark. Ocarina of time is weird because it was so amazing when it was released but for it to so consistently top best games lists was a little too much and hinted at it being overrated. I actually think in the long run A link to the past is a better game.

@dman519 I think OoT holds up very well for a 13 year old game. It's certainly not my all time favorite, but it's still my favorite in the series (haven't played ALttP so you might be right there). I find the subsequent games have progressively suffered more and more from poor pacing that wasn't present in OoT, and a lot of the Zelda formula has gotten really stale like the story, the items, the locations etc. But when OoT was first released it was pretty damn epic.

@QueenOliver There's no doubt it was epic as hell when it came out and its still better than most of the crap they come out with nowadays. Its just that theres a lot of people who will say "oot is greatest game eva, FACT" haha thats what makes it overrated. I dont even know what my fav of the series is. I would just say OOt and MM are my fav 3D with a slight edge to MM, and ALttp and LA are my fav 2D. And yes the last good zelda game was MM. WW was just OK(crappy dungeons) and TP just sucked.

@dman519 Those people are annoying, but outlets that rate it so highly aren't judging it by modern standards, and probably shouldn't. OoT has aged better than most. I find it odd to rate a fantastic game that people love a little too much, to be more overrated than the many mediocre or shithouse games that get blown WAY out of proportion.
I still love the dungeons in each Zelda game, including WW. It's just the busywork in between that kills it for me, and the formula has become predictable.

@QueenOliver Sounds like you're saying that its such a good game, even now, that it isn't fair to put it into the "overrated" category. I would agree with that. I think instead of saying its overrated, it would make more sense to say that its "one of the best games ever, not THE best game ever."
The older games dungeons had a difficulty in combat and puzzles that WW and TP seriously lacked. The formula is stale, but if the busywork and dungeons have more depth I dont think it would matter.

@Youkickmydog1988 I agree that games need a coherent narrative otherwise there's no incentive to succeed; my problem is when games go too far either way. Earthbound and by extension Mother 3 are two of my favourite games in this regard, as are games like Heavy Rain and Dreamfall, because one feels like they actually have an effect on the story. I don't like when it feels like I'm just shoving a character between hour-long cutscenes and not affecting anything.

I really loved both games. At the time FFVII looked great, had a wonderful soundtrack, and a great story. I've tried playing it again and couldn't believe how dated it seemed. I would love a remake if for nothing else a modern nostalgia trip. As for Halo I think that it was so fun because the graphics were crisp and the controls were tight. More so than the campaign mode, it's multiplayer was truly addicting. I think Halo really got it's name from it's multiplayer experience.

The Call of Duty series is probably the most over rated series in existence in my mind. They aren't 'bad' games.. but they are incredibly boring. I don't understand the fascination, and with every new incarnation I feel such an over powering sense of Deja-Vu.

As a follow-up post, my most overrated game (well, really, a series) is the Metal Gear Solid franchise. It seems as though it can't decide whether to be silly or serious and comes across as trying too hard. I've tried on multiple occasions to play various iterations of it and have never found myself making any progress due to the irritating and needlessly drawn-out cutscenes, poor writing and awkward controls.

I'll agree with you on both games. I've never truly enjoyed any Final Fantasy games apart from IX and XII; even then only because they shook up the formula. I found Halo to be dull and awkward to control with a contrived story.
