@Bobomooman2395 It's a bending iron. Basically a hot pipe which is used to bend the wood for the sides or the binding materials. Some people use electric ones like that and some still use an old pipe with a propane torch to heat it up. Takes a little bit more work to bend things accurately with an iron which is why some use commercial bending machines such as the Fox Bender.
Sides aren't that hard to make. Looking at the rest of the videos I'm guessing he bent the sides himself. The thing he's using to bend the purfling is a bending iron and you can use it to bend your sides too. Freehand bending with an iron is a bit more hit and miss than doing it with a press. I actually prefer freehand bending the ribs for my instruments. And, yes, you can buy pre-bent sides from StewMac but nothing beats doing it yourself.
@kolialliotto They are spool clamps made for joing top/backs to guitar dies. They usually have a soft wood (or cork) on the part that touches the top/back to prevent it digging in. I always wondered the same until I tried them out.
@kolialliotto give the guy a break hes workin miracles with limited tooling...he probably used another workshop with a press to form the sides...i guess..
That drill bit you used for the tuning machine holes was a bit too long I think. The shorter the bit, the less wobble it may have. That wobbled a lot. Try brad point bits. Or better yet, forstner bits. They are very accurate. And you should clamp that to the drill press table. If the bit binds up in the channel, the whole thing could grab and spin at the RPM of the drill! Your hands are your life man. Keep 'em safe. Beautiful work! Peace.
I learnt mostly from reading and looking at pictures of how other people did it as they posted it on their websites, I also built smaller experimental instruments before attempting a full blown guitar
Quick tip: With the machine "off" position the wood under the drill press first, making sure you're on the right spot, then turn it on and drill your hole, that way you wont ruin the wood with the spinning drill. Just a thought...
save some money on the bending iron they work great and are pretty easy to use but build a jig of the sides 2 pieces of sheet metal and a silicone heating blanket will work just as well and save a couple hundred bucks. nice job on the bending of the sides though if you did do them
Any video on how to make the sides?

why did not you show us how you made the sides? If you had spoken telling us what you were doing, that would have helped. Anyway, great video.

I'm pretty sure he bought the sides. The only way I have seen them made is with a steam press.

Yeah you definitely should clamp that down... It makes it easier to drill holes and you would get it cleaner...

I will for sure make a side bending jig, the bending iron worked ok for this project but it is more stressful. Thanks

hey do u live in luther oklahoma? cause i live in edmond thats cool well if u live there anyways
lildrumman404 4 years ago
you can see the bending iron around 3:48 being used for shaping the binding
bigdjindustriez 4 years ago
were did u get the sides? of the body it didnt show that u made em in part 4
nilogg 4 years ago
I would presume he made them using a bending iron. Sides aren't that difficult if you have the right tool
