Cats do this on stairs all the time even without catnip. They love to roll about and twist and flip over and scratch and stretch. Its just what they do on carpet but especially on stairs for some reason.

One of mine, Darjeeling, reacts like a kitten-my other cat, a big male with siamese coloring that a stray had in our barn, acts as though he is above such things-he's such a prima donna, he acts all regal and like he's some multi-million dollar purebred with a pedigree going back to the stone age, when really he's just a former stray kitten from a woodpile. Darjeeling is a stray that just found her way to me too, but he refuses to act like it-he's Mr. Dignity. XD
