trying to figure out this sport by watching youtube has not been helpful to me at all. COMPLETELY confused here. Is it possible to swing the cricket bat like a baseball bat? I think the ball would travel a bit uhm, better? All ive seen is pop-flys in random directions... is that a good thing?

You can swing it like a baseball bat and sometimes you can hit better. But the aim of cricket is the nudge the ball round the field to get runs, so hitting it baseball all the time would go to a fielder most of the time.

the problem here is that unlike baseball the ball can be bowled anywhere on the pitch at the batsman ,on the full or bounced, so accordingly the batsman cannot pre-empt the flight of the ball but only react to each individual delivery.a lot of these big hits are when runs are needed at the end of a game and the batsmen just throw the bat at anything,crickets a game you probably have to grow up with to fully appreciate,it looks easier than it is!
