  • R.I.P farfar från David

  • He was a little "voice professor" - Rolf talking about his grandfather (Jussi Bjorlings father) His grandfather made comments about what a singer should think about. Diet, how to take care of your voice, breathing, note attack etc. Then he goes on about: "How one should sing" (David Bjorling=Jussis father). The onset of a tone should never be strained! Take the tones that comes easily in the middle. The low tones and high tones will come naturally later. Ok this was my try to make a translation.

  • thanks for posting this, very interesting!!

  • My pleasure!

  • @bjorling62 fuck you if you dont like it you dont nead to setch for it

  • I knew and sang with Rolf when he lived in Riverside, IL (Chicago). Although he didn't seem unhappy, there is much sadness in his tale. He died several years ago in Sweden. I have a Swedish record (Three Generations) On this record Jussi sings, then Rolf, then Raymond. I won't comment about the relative artistry, but all three have the same beautiful, velvet, voices. I would like to know more about Rolf's and Raymond's European careers, etc. I was thrilled to meet Jussi at Carnagie Hall. Reply

  • I knew Rolf when he lived in Riverside,IL (Chicago). I don't know that he was unhappy, but there is much sadness in his tale. There is a Swedish record (Three Generations) that I had/have (if I can find it). On the record Jussi sings several songs, then Rolf, then Raymond. I wont quibble about the relative artistry, but all three have the same beautiful sound. Rolf died in Sweden several years ago. I would really like to know more about his career in Europe, and is Raymond still singing?

  • Interesting! Thank you for posting and thanks Renata.

  • Continuation: The manual further states that children should not sing pianissimo, for their throats will clog up, but they should not sing in a manner akin to screaming. Good diction is important, and thus the cultivation of a good middle register.

Note of interest: the cultivation of the middle register is what Flagstad talks about in a rare interview that I heard in the archives of her museum in Hamar. Regards, hope you read this, did my best.

  • Maybe somebody could translate some of what he's saying to English?

  • Brief summary. This is Rolf, son of Jussi talking about a brief manual for singers written by his grandfather (that is, Jussi's father). The manual takes up appropriate diet, way of life etc. The really interesting thing is that jussi's father writes that what singers should concentrate on is the middle voice, neither high nor low notes, but develop the middle voice and the rest will come.

  • Caruso said the same thing

  • It actually makes a lot of sense, because you can sing in the middle register with thicker or thinner cords (head/ches voice) so if you can shift from heady to chesty sound easily in the middle register, then moving down or up ceases to become any problem.
