The tortoise will not die from having a wheel instead of a leg. I'd be more worried about the fitting, and exactly how the metal interacts with the flesh and bone. I surmise they have a fitting inside, so the wheel can be pushed in and changed where necessary - as if its out in the garden for long periods, it will cause rust.

Other than that, I see no problem here. I'm curious as to how it came about missing one leg though, with virtually no shell damage to that area. Hmm.

@diablo313 Could be a pet dog or cat got it by the back leg. We really don't know. It'd have to be one helluva infection to rot a full leg to the point of amputation, though.

I can see this specific tortoise has had a troubled past though, just by looking at the shell. : (

@tw1stedgrudge The only reason I come to the conclusion that it was an infection. 1) Like you said there was no shell damage. 2) I don't think they said anything about owning the tortoise before he was injured. He could of been in the wild for a long period of time while an infection was eating away at his leg.

Obviously, no one really knows I'm just doing some speculating. But I have seen different animals lose different body parts from infection legs, tails, etc.

I would have probably only warranted serious dissection of the muscles or a marrow infection in the bone to be a cause for the loss of the leg - and I was kindof thinking if it was a bone disease, the shell being made of bone, the surrounding area might show scarring of a past infection also? I dunno, just an idea, maybe.. Weird, in any case.
