  • Sorry I am a machinst not a camera man. But you can see all of the dial indicator movements if you expand the video. Either way, doesn't matter, machine was sold 2 years ago. And for the record, the indicator is a .0001 indicator. Same with the Micrometer. Believe me, we know how to check machines for accuracy the right way.

  • You must use live-center

  • @warshaty Not for this purpose, here they are checking whether the head stock is aligned with the ways. Implementing the tail stock live center will distort the test bar if it is not centered, which can only be aligned with the use of the head stock. There is a general rule in machining that if the work piece length is less then three times the diameter then the supports are not needed.

  • Unless your micrometer goes down to ten thousandths then how can you measure down that far? Second of all Im under the impression that you cant machine down to the ten thousandths of an inch unless your in a climate controlled facility. Not being an ass but I see so many people saying their machine is accurate down to.000x amount here on youtube. On the flip side its a beautiful southbend. Mine is in a lot worse condition.

  • @Dman40475

get yourself a test dial indicator and you can read down to 0.0001". you are probably right about machining that precise, i do not know for sure.

  • @Dman40475 physiist777 is correct, they do manufacture test indicators with graduations ranging from 0.001, 0.0005 to 0.0001. As for accuracy, machinists have a few trick up their sleeves such as the aligning the compound, as seen in this video (youtube.com/watch?v=Zz_eDXtmPGs). A good tool makers lathe if properly set up can machine a rod to a consistent diameter with less then 0.0001" error over the entire length, but even a more domestic lathe can come reasonably close.

  • Hello - I'm new here. Just watched this and your other video on this beautiful machine. You're right it looks and runs like it just arrived from the factory...to bad that factory doesn't exist anymore. I hope it got a good home and is making parts daily! Looking forward to watch more of your videos. RL Atlanta, GA USA
