Christopher Nolan is THE best director ever and he's one hell of a writer. I've seen all of them and I love The Prestige the most but that was the only one he didn't write. Inception looks like a masterpiece so far. I hope it will be the best movie ever!
@c3789 thats not exactly a new light... batman and joker are always represented as opposite sides of teh same coin in teh comics... or at teh very least the Joker is presented as something Batman could have very easily become. Its not new but it is very well done in the Darkknight. I agree, though, that Nolan's Batman movies have far exceeded my expectations. The franchise seems refreshed with it's darker approach to Batman's personal struggles and crime-fighting. The Joker was a good match for Batman - so many similarities and yet so many differences. I can't wait until Nolan makes another Batman move - He just HAS to! =)

Also, I hated that Nolan made Batman like a freakin' spy in TDK. The scene where Batman had to prepare for his "high altitude" jump absolutely frustrated me. All the military gadgets and crap made me want to throw stuff at the screen. Does he have to tell us EVERYTHING about how Batman does his stunts? Nolan has taken away all the mystery and wonder of the Batman character. Sure, Burton might not have given us enough details, but Nolan equally disappoints in the other direction.
To sum up, I think that Nolan confuses taking the material seriously with realism. Batman, while it should be taken seriously, should not be taken as something that must be grounded in reality. After all, a man who dresses up as a Bat could never exist in the real world, so why set the movies in the real world. Nolan sets Batman in the real world, and Batman can never exist in the real world. It is this area where Tim Burton wins out against Nolan, hands down.
Completely agree with you man..i have been saying this since the release of TDK. At the end of the day Batman is a comic book character who is the guardian of Gotham City...a Gotham which Burton nailed perfectly...it was dark...moody...snow..the lot..gave it a more fantasy feel..the way it should be. Nolan makes it too "real" for my liking, forgetting that he is actually a comic book character. My opinion of course
I understand where you're coming from, but I feel that if Nolan were to simply recreate the same "comic book" vibe of the Burton films, it would be rather repetitive. Burton nailed that aspect of the character so brilliantly, so why would Nolan want to do the same thing? Instead he looked to a different side of the character from a different era of comics and decided to bring that angle out more. To me, both styles work in different ways; Nolan's is my favorite but I love Burton too.
To reniisgod, I'm glad you agree. I think too many people are so obsessed with worshiping Nolan and bashing Burton that they may have forgotten about the elements that made Burton's films classics in their own right.
In terms of visuals and style, Tim Burton nailed Batman. I hated to see that style and mood being thrown away when Nolan took over. He substituted that distinct Batman world for a dull, plain-looking Gotham City.

I don't need to have every last Batman gadget explained to the point where I feel like I'm watching a spy movie instead of a Batman movie.
3) The tumbler sucks. Again, another example of Nolan's ultra-realism that forbids him to provide a cool-looking Batmobile like in the Burton films, just because it would look "not real enough."
While Nolan's batman films are good, there are 2 main problems I have with them: 1) His Gotham City sucks. It has absolutely no style. Chicago is not Gotham city. Period. Gotham City is a fictional, dark, gothic city. It's not Chicago, New York, or any other real city. Gotham should have its own set design... it should be built, not set in a real location.
2) Everything is almost "too real" in Nolan's films.

tim burton is a master of fantasy, and set design. his batman was amazing, i love it. i agree with you in this, realism is not always good.

I guess its really matter of opinions...as for point number 2, I think this is the reason why people love the movie. Its very real Chicago is Gotham City, and it really doesnt feel like a comic book movie but rather a crime thriller like Heat. I absolutely love the realism in the movie which is why I am absolutely hooked on both batman begins and TDK. I really cant stand the other batman movies because it did feel like a fantasy.

This was an action movie that was put together so crisply, above and below the line, that it is deep and meaningful, and is the most entertaining Batman film of all time, and one of the final great performances of Heath Ledger.
The first Batman, directed by Tim Burton, was NOT a comedy nor was it meant to be a comedy. Maybe some of the others were (namely, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin), but Burton's Batman movies are not comedies. The only comedic element to them may just come from the fact that they're older movies, and the lacking special effects and overall aged style may give us a laugh at times...but there's not much more comedy than that.
Yes, there was killing in Burton's Batman. Namely, Batman killing other people. But I don't care about this. In fact, I think Batman did kill in the early comics, so Burton having him kill in his movies wouldn't seem like that big of a deal. .......But what's your point anyway, ANKOBROWN?

Heath Ledger did NOT mean to kill himself. He took an accidental overdose of his sleeping pills. Everyone on the set spoke of how happy he was and how he would joke around and talk about his daughter(enthusiastically) between takes.

Yes, there was killing in Burton's Batman. Namely, Batman killing other people. But I don't care about this. In fact, I think Batman did kill in the early comics, so Burton having him kill in his movies wouldn't seem like that big of a deal. .......But what's your point anyway, ANKOBROWN?

jtranmer, My Point is Burton's Batman Movies was Great But, Nolan's Batman Movies surprize me with characters I saw in the Cartoon and the Video Games but, didn't see in Burton's Batman Movies! Not Only That, Nolan First Batman movie show how Batman learned Martial Arts which the others Batman movies didn't show!

@ANKOBROWN That kinda reflects the evolution of batman in the comics. Often in the originals he threw people in vats of oil, but as things have progressed he doesn't any more.

I was just sayin he took that role way to seriously and it drove him crazy where he thought the joker was some crazy guy which turned him nuts. Jack Nicholson never killed himeself or turned nuts when he played the joker. Heath Ledger did NOT mean to kill himself. He took an accidental overdose of his sleeping pills. Everyone on the set spoke of how happy he was and how he would joke around and talk about his daughter(enthusiastically) between takes.
He was NOT insane. Only his character was.You have no right to call him crazy or that he deserved to die.
