  • "If he says Wall St, is frantic , cause he won't sell the Atlantic , then you know you're talking to The Reefer Man!"....This is from "My Little Chickadee" starring W.C. Fields , is'nt it? I think that's Fields in the corner at the end...

  • Cab Calloway is the early Michael Jackson, all those dance steps. Makes me wonder if Milt ever met Victor Wooten...

  • great music and great showmanship. entertaining for all the senses- thats what cab is all about tho i guess

  • very true, although i've never had the opportunity to smell cab calloway ;D

  • taking bass playing to a whole new level

  • Bad to the Bone

  • Cab is the original headbanger!

  • PS.... I still have my Dad's Bass.......

  • Gee! Who will ever even consider Rock'n'roll after this? Thanks!

  • I'd like to repeat Mr. Scott's comment:

    It's not Milt Hinton!

    It's Al Morgan.

  • How do you know that? Milt Hinton did play with Cab Calloway and Al Morgan was a pianist. That certainly is Hinton's Bass style.

  • Yeah, that's what I thought too. I can't even figure out who Al Morgan is. Period. Let alone why that would be him playing bass.

  • Al Morgan was indeed a New Orleans bassist who played with Cab until 1937, when Milt replaced him. He was proficient at the double and triple slapping style. I can't say if this is Al.

  • I have since been informed that this is Al Morgan. Was this the first drug song?

  • I don't think so. Charley Patton recorded "A Spoonful Blues" in 1929 and The Memphis Jug Band recorded "Cocaine Habit Blues" in 1930. There are some compilations of drug songs from the 20s onward. A good one is "Junkers, Jivers & Coke Fiends: Vintage Songs About Drugs, 1926-1952".

  • yes it is al morgan..... that's my dad, im donald a. morgan a.s.c. ..... i just saw this, it makes me very proud....... happy new year every body!!.......D

  • "Catch a Cab" Calloway is one of the all-time bests.

When his performances were good they were fantastic.

Oddly, many of his presentations were less than good. It's rare for a top-talent entertainer to be inconsistent, but Cab was that. If the reader were to pick-up a CD copy of the aptly named "The Best of Cab Calloway", he'd find the version of "Reefer Man" on that album far superior to this rendition. Each selection found on the above-mentioned CD is Calloway's utmost work.

    Thanks Cab.

  • Reefers'll do that to ya!

  • Make you play the base?

  • It's not Milt, it's Al Morgan.

  • Damn, look at Milt slap that bass.
