Shelley was fabulous in the role. Of course, she was NOT a racist. Shelley said about the character how vile she was. The character was vile beyond belief, a female Hitler, vulgar and evil, trash on trash. And Shelley played the role to perfection.
@steeplepossum39 Winters character was so vile that she made you ashamed to belong to the same species. I wanted to beat her with a 2x4 for the way she treated "Sleena". It takes serious talent to stir that kind of emotion in a person. So sad to see Elizabeth Hartmann in the audience at 1:58. This was her 1st film role and she played her character to perfection in my opinion. You couldn't help but love her. She comitted suicide after a long battle with depression. Poitier was great as usual.
I thought that her acting in this movie was outstanding and she deserved to win this and in reality I don't see her as racist. This was a very sad movie and Selina and Ole Pa's acting was great as well.RIP Shelley! I love you.
WIsh her interview on Inside the Actor's Studio was on here - she discusses this role wonderfully in it. She talks about trying to use all the ACtors studio stuff about it, and the director told her "none of that! You are just a bigoted bitch!"
@JOJO22858 Very true. After this so many people told Shelley they hater her because she was such a racist!! That was a double edged sword for Shelley: she knew was good to be so convincing but for people to believe she WAS the character??? Anyone who knew Shelley knows what BS that is. They're NEVER be another Shelley!
BTW, I believe that is Sexy Rexy (Harrison), in glasses, seated behind her. And isn't that the great Rachel Roberts (his then wife) next to him?? Another great gone too soon.
Thank you for posting the unedited clip. Look at Ruth!! And beautiful Shelley who is sorely missed. Nice reaction of the tragic Elizabeth Hartman on her co-star's well-deserved win.
What a great actress.

I love Shelley. And she made sure to remind you that this was her second Oscar.
She should have won for Lolita (not nominated) and A Place in the Sun.
One of a kind.

Shelley Winters was fantastic as the racist mother in PATCH OF BLUE, methinks
it was a much stronger performance than ANNE FRANK. She deserved this
Oscar even more so. Miss her so much!!
