  • When he said he was going to play rochut's 13th etude, I just had to run to get my book and follow along. Of course, he nailed it.

  • im first chair at my school.

  • nice !!!!

  • The way that you make first chair is to be the best in your section. I am not saying that your video lied, but to me personally, it was a little misleading. Thanks anyway

  • i use this book at least 5 times per week. thanx so much 4 this post. very instructional!!

  • /watch?v=fTLfgmfKDr8 Own that, play that song, make it sound amazing. You get it.

  • The guy sounds like Dr. Egon Spengler from the Ghostbusters

  • So my question is, no offense to this player, but who cares about making "first" chair? Does that make you a better musician just because you're first chair, and everyone else in the other positions somehow inferior? I believe that every position in a band or orchestra needs an adequate player, not just on principal or "first" chair. If anything, better players are needed on lower parts simply because having a firm foundation is equally important than a screaming loud lead player.

  • @JPSaxMan The title is more about the attitude you take and always doing your best...the book is very clear about the musical experience being the most important. I agree with you. Thanks for stopping by.

  • recorded with a toaster.

  • Not to be an ass but I have a friend a my high school in the third year with a much more smooth legato than you, but he's an incredibly talented guy :D

  • I've been playing trombone since I was in grade 6. (I'm currently in grade 10. ), and have progressed to play first trombone in symphonic band as well as jazz band. One thing that my teachers always tell me is that I need to breathe more/deeper, so that my sound will project. I do my best to keep my shoulders back, and breathe deep, however I keep going back to my bad habit. Any tips/suggestions?

  • How to make first chair without buying anything:

    Play well.

  • In my opinion, this book is just another thing people try to waste musicians money on. I'm sure you did not get this good by reading this book. I'm sure you spent hours and hours and hours going through your arbans. (I'm a tuba player so that is the only trombone book I read off of.) but so on and so on. One book is not going to make you first chair. Reading isn't going to make you first chair. Practice and practice will make you first chair. I hope you reply "The book talks about that too" lol

  • I wouldn't send kids off practicing rochut/bordogni without direction. A good teacher can give guidance interpreting the studies. They should be studied as if they were solos instead of etudes to cross off after a week. Find a good teacher and work on whatever he uses. If they feel you are ready for the vocalises they will start you on them.

  • I agree that mastering the legato tongue is essential for trombone because the inability to do natural slurs between most notes. However, I disagree with using natural slurs whenever possible when playing. The different attack from a natural slur and a light tongue is distracting within a phrase. None of my teachers advocated mixing legato tongue and natural slurs in the same phrase.

  • How to make first chair: Go through Arbon!

  • wow. great tone.

my tone is crap. occasionally, like once every week or two, i would get a tone almost as great as yours.

  • i studied with Dr. Kimball when I was an undergraduate. He is an amazing teacher! and great player! What a huge asset to the world of trombone!

  • Actually I'm fine in the 4th chair playing my Shires bass thank you very much.

  • Would you recommend this book for a trombone player that's in 10th grade and has been playing for 3 going on 4 years? Cause I am that player and interested in this book. What do you think?

  • Absolutely 100%

  • Thank You

  • @OTooleBoy213

    YES

  • Sackbut actually comes from the words "sacquer" and "bouter" meaning "push" and "pull." So to have a sackbut that didn't have anything to do with pushing or pulling (a slide) makes no sense. Look up what you're talking about before you sound like an idiot in front of the billions of people who use the internet.

  • Bach 36, Small bore w/ Schilke 51D Mouthpiece.

Good for EVERYTHING, Both Jazz and Symphonic Playing.

  • 1:27 Lol, I wanted you to do the "fail" song so bad at that point..

  • YOUR GOOD!!! :) I'm getting close to being that good, but I am not good at all. I mean like I can play a simple song like Jingle Bells. In band I have to play Celebration for Winds and Percusion. IT"S HARD! I'm only in like the middle of 6th grade, but I made 3rd chair in 7th, and 8th grade band. :D

  • Trombones were originally named sack butts and didn't have a slide.

  • @LowCalorieVideos They actually did have a slide. That's why trombones are known for being the only modern instrument that still uses the slide mechanism.

  • @LowCalorieVideos Sort of. Sackbuts are a different instrument, like the lute was an early form of guitar but you wouldn't say guitars used to be called lutes.

  • @LowCalorieVideos sacbuts did have a slide

  • @LowCalorieVideos lol sack...lol butt.EUPHONIUMS FTW! trombones ok too.

  • how to make 1st chair trombone is pratice, learn higher resgister and get lessons. there you go. no need for a frickin video on etudes because if you can play you can play a etude.

  • playing inner [2nd] parts is much more fun

  • Why did he dub in the playing?

  • @danieldevere he didn't...

  • @Qermaq Um. Why is the playing totally out of sync between the video and audio when all the talking is perfectly in sync?

  • @danieldevere it's legato

  • It never ceases to amaze me how a simple and helpful video sparks such a raging torrent of absolute bull shit.

  • @bob9teen76 LOL i know what you mean :P

  • Will Kimball was my trombone instructor in college years ago. By far the best brass teacher I ever had.

  • awesome. helps a lot!

  • I really like his sound. So resonant.

  • you messed up at 0:58

  • What kind of trombone is that??

  • That's a tenor trombone with a open-wrap "F" attachment.

  • no

its actually a Axial Flow Tenor trombone

    more specifically

    An Edwards T350

  • Why do you guys care "What is that trombone?" . Why do you need to know that?

  • Because people want to know and we answer. People are curios and are more than welcome to make comments and if they have a question, they have a right to have it answered. Why do you care?

  • I understood, but still... I am here to listen and watch the video... Learn something... And I don't care what is he playing...

  • Freedom of speech, buddy. It's covered by the First Amendment.

  • Because theres many different types. Slide trumpet(soprano), Bass trombone, Contrabass, Standard tenor, Tenor with f attachment and thats basicly all I know.

  • haha yes I understand that. Let's rephrase that. What model trombone is that? :) Thankyou griego4m!!

  • WTF! Why the hell would you make a video teaching someone how to make first chair?! IT'S CALLED PRACTICE!

  • This is probably one of the best trombone instruction videos I've seen.

  • WHOAH.

I play trombone as my secondary instrument, flute as my first - the tone in this vid is AMAZING. there are no gaps between the notes at ALL. WHoah.

  • wow, seriously. his tone and control is amazing

  • This guy's tone is amazing.

  • GAWD! Trombone seems harder than I thought

I'm a euphonium player and I have to learn to play trombone for high school xD

    Thx for the tips

  • you're cool

  • This is great advice for everybody. There are tons of great players who have trouble playing in a beautiful singing style.

Oh yea, and learn to use the English language.

  • i know how to use the english language. and i didnt say everyone played horrid. all i said is im first chair trombonist and it is a great tip for begginers. No need to get mad

  • in what middle school?

  • Brink Junior High in Moore Oklahoma

  • that was a rhetorical question.

  • Thecandyman86, You Win. (I Don't think he knew it was a Rhetorical question Lawl!) Reply to this :P

  • Sorry kid, but get your head out of your ass, you're in Middle School these tips are amazing not just for beginners, but for players of every level.

  • No way, straight small bore horns were made for jazz. Look at bach, there are 3 jazz trombones there and umpteen symphonic so I'm afraid your wrong.

  • ok ok, i guess your right, ok you are right. I just thought 'd gve my opinion in the world of trombonalism ;-) btw i play in the Hull Youth Jazz Orchestra

  • @joeywright28 yea but there was a trombone player in the l phil who played on a bach 16

  • FYI, trombones were originally used for playing in church music settings.

  • Man i miss my trombone so much. To bad my mom hates music. Playing legato is cake on tbone

  • tell your mom to get the hell over it and let you play

  • How can anyone hate music? Play anyways.

  • That's what I was thinking!! I NEED music!! How can someone hate it??

  • Nice i wanted to get that horn (Bach 42) but i didnt have the money. So i got a Nirschell. (DONT GET THESE!!!!)

  • it's actually an Edwards

  • This is excellent instruction for obtaining a great legato sound.

  • Funny how your telling everybody that and it so happens that only one person gets first chair

  • exactly right! and the book talks about that, too. Enjoy! :)

  • Is that any reason not to play your best? Life has a pecking order, we are social creatures and the best player Should play the hardest part. Generally things make more sense when you look at the Whole picture.

  • How do you play as full as that guy? It sounded so good!

  • try to play as loud as you can without pressing the mouthpiece on your lips :)

  • F attachments have a fuller sounds. They just require more air.

  • Which is why I never play them loud enough. Need to get louder...

  • Ok how do you play as full as that? Well.. When i was in Band my teacher explained how to play loud and full like that. He said to play with SACC. BALLS

DONT BE AFRAID TO PLAY. THIS REALLY HELPED ME MAKE ALL VALLEY

  • im an 8th grader trombone player and to play legato i just tongue very very lightly on the roof of my mouth and make sure my change in position and tongue are precise.

  • hold on .."i'm an 8th grader" ...what's your point?

  • he is helping all the people who can't play like this or have some trouble my friend sent me this link and i was just reading the comments i NEED NO HELP....By the way i am a 9th grader HAHAHAHA'SS

  • Actually, using natural slurs is the smoothest way to play legato. The only reason you are popping your notes is because you lack the technical ability to play them correctly. To play them correctly you must use your air and not your lips (too much) making a seamless stream to get to the next note.

  • Using natural slurs is not the way to get the smoothest legato becuase when you rely on just the breaks it sounds to poppy, and poppy is not legato, the best way is using a "do" tounging while sustaining the notes and using quick slide movements.

  • tromboner?

  • what about the rest of the song? its a beautiful piece.

  • Vincent Hernandez from Hesperia,CA is way better than you haha!!

    CHENTE READ THIS!!

  • and Joseangel Davalos Too!!!!

  • how do you get the wave? i can only to a solid note.

  • my slide sticks horribly. i'v cleaned it, used slide-o-mix and it still wont go well

    any suggestions?

  • Have you checked your slide for dents? Also, what kind of horn is it?

  • no visible dents and its a 5 year old bach

  • There might be dents that are hard to see, or the slide might just be severely out of alignment. It might be helpful to get it checked out by a shop.

  • thanks

  • Makd sure you clean both inner and outter slides. Then apply just a little liquid brass polish. Run the slides few times and then carefully clean again. Use slide cream from manufacturer with water spray

  • Use some Reka if it's available where you are. I haven't been able to find anything better yet. It's even nicer for marching. Who would want to cream a slide when its 100 degrees out....At least that's what I do.

  • I would say spray water and make sure there aren't scratches in the slide. This can easily happen if tiny bits of metal come off the end of the stocking which is not uncommen.

  • video and audio seem a bit off haha

  • amazing. i love how he moves his slide so fast on a slow song. that is my biggest problem. in theory we should all play with afaster slide on slower music

  • Well yeah, don't ever slow your slide for slow music, always move it as fast as when you play fast things.

  • Quick slide, clean licks.

  • Hello! Can you tell me where I can get one of those covers for the shoulder rest and holding part of the slide. Thanks!

  • Just google "lsco guard" and you should get to the webpage of the people who make them. They have a nice fitted one for most styles of trombones. I'd link directly, but apparently youtube doesn't approve of that?

  • wow, I too used to study this stuff back in the day. It does help.

  • What is the best way to achieve vibrato while playing the trombone: mouth movement, movement of the diaphragm, or slide movement?

  • The type of vibrato usually depends on the song you're playing at the time - an old Tommy Dorsey ballad will call for slide vibrato, while something like Morceau Symphonique will generally be played with more lip vibrato. If I remember correctly, diaphragm vibrato is usually avoided.

  • Oh, okay. Thanks!

  • Yeah, diaphragm vibrato is avoided on most instruments.

  • I NEED TROMBONE SHEET MUSIC PLEASE HELP I NEED THESE SONGS; the final countdown!!!if u can get a good website 4 me ill suscribe u guess

  • man, I like your trombone!

man, you have really nice tone!

you should make a video on how to improve your tone!

there seems to be no help around here..

i have been asking, but yet no one helps >:|

  • Long tones and listening to players who are better than you so you can get a concept of how a professional trombone should sound. I recommend listening to (classical side) Joseph Alessi, Christian Lindberg, Carl Lenthe, Ralph Sauer, Jacques Mauger, Steve Witser, James Miller. (Bass Bones) David Taylor, Charlie Vernon. (Jazz Side) Wycliffe Gordon, J. J. Johnson, Steve Turre, Robin Eubanks, Tommy Dorsey, Carl Fontana, Bill Watrous. Hope this helps.

  • Thanx

Do you know where I can listen to these players....or download their music?

  • go to their websites, itunes, your professors, youtube.

  • thanks for giving me a down thumb lol

    its all good = ]

i just got a new horn last week

    brand new

bach 42b open wrap is very nice = ]

  • ooo... very nice:)

  • Dr. Kimball used to be my trombone instructor in college and in addition to playing the trombone beautifully he was a heck of a teacher.

  • ive been on the trombone for 4 years now!

    its awesome = ]

i love playing im one of the best trombones in the region/area.

  • lol

  • Why does the trombone have black stuff on it?

  • It's to protect the horn from acids in his skin, which would eat through the lacquer and even the metal eventually.

  • tastey :) whats is it? foam? tape?

  • I believe that it's leather.

  • hey can anyone help me out? When I toungue any note on my trombone, you can actually hear me tonguing it if you know what I mean , and it is really annoying and doesn't sound good. BTW my trombone is a POS (if you know what I mean ;))

  • Always best to have your local director or private lesson instructor work with you on this problem...hopefully they will make sure your teeth are far apart and you are saying a syllable starting with a "T" or "D" sound so your tongue goes to the right spot on your teeth and not between them. And make sure your tongue is down out of the way. These things are just easier to check in person. :) Best of luck!

  • hey thanks i'll try that

  • thank dear god for you, Will Kimball

  • great video.nice sound.peace

  • i was in band and a music major and this guy is way too band nerdy for me damn dude get a life sorry but i can play and read thats all i need to do
