The sword is dull obviously it is better off used for blunt force impact against armored opponents. This kid isnt gonna be strong enough to bludgeon an orc to death.

Aragorn helps my realise that there IS always hope. I like a girl verry much, and its hard to understand that she has a boyfriend already. But she likes me too a bit. The only thing i can say is: Pations, because there is always hope! Sorry for my bad english, i am french;).

@xMorgawr I think Aragorn knew perfectly how defected the sword was, you could see how he reacted to a similar sword earlier (right before the 'row' with Legolas). However, in this case, you could see that the boy was not confident at all, so Aragorn just emphasized that 'there is always hope'. And the sword might have been a very good sword before the 'rusting'.....this is how I read this scene.
@xMorgawr Yeah I know, but when you're facing a 14 year old boy who is about to probably be killed, it isn't encouraging to tell him that his weapons is bloody useless! He has to tell him something to keep the poor kid's hopes up.
