  • So it's only taken 7 years to improve this much???

  • Hi Shinji, Thanks for the great video. I have one question: Did you find your times improved after switching to TI-style freestyle?

  • What is different about your positioning, Shinji, that makes your hips and legs higher than Terry's?

  • I see you switched form 6 beat kick to 2 beat kick for improved stability. I tried the same. I can swim either way but for me, 2 beat kick seems to require lot more upper body strength and higher tempo. I am more comfortable with 6 or 4 beat kick. Is there anything wrong with 6 or 4 beat kick swimming at normal tempo?

  • @afara2000,

It is your choice. People sometimes try to snap harder when they use 2 beat kick, and it causes loss of energy. Smaller flutter kick is more efficient than inefficient 2 beat kick. You make sure your roll can sync with the leg motion every three kicks when you use 6 beat kick.

  • Love this video -- it gives me hope that someday, I'll swim much better than I do now.

  • Lovely technique! I was wondering if you could help me with my two-beat kick. I just... can't do it. Whenever I start swimming, I just do my usual 6 beat kick as a force of habit and simply can't seem to do the 2 beat kick! I think the problem is psychological, but maybe I need to reprogramme my muscle memory? What do you think I should do?

  • @9littleducks,

The problem of 2-beat kick is mainly caused by your dominant side. If your dominant side is left, you will focus that you try not to move your left leg then you enter (spare) left arm.

  • thx

  • Love the technique... before i didnt know how or when to kick!!!! thanks (5months swimmer)

  • Am i able to swim fast...i think about 50m-100m freestyle races?

Or is it just good for long distance swimmers?

Where can i order the Video from Total Immersion, where the coach explains how to swim freestylle right?

  • im thinking about coming in for lessons with you in SJ, do you teach side stroke as well?

  • I am afraid I do not teach side stroke.

  • hi

is there any way that i can keep my body more balanced and not wobbling my head and body around all the time?

also what ways are there to make your freestyle strokes faster without "wobbling" the whole body?

  • How do you "wobble"?

    If it occurs horizontally,

    1) You might cross enter your arms in the water.

    2) You might over-rotate your body

    3) You pick up your elbows too high after pulling them from the water

  • If it occurs vertically,

    1) You raise your head during breathing

    2) You push the water down when you pull

    3) You lean on the side with your head too much.

If you can find the cause, you can fix it.

  • I can't help but notice that you seemed like a pretty strong swimmer even before TI. Your post-TI form is beautiful, but the cadence is much slower, and it's easier to maintain better form. I doubt any beginner would have been able to maintain the fast cadence of your pre-TI form. Great final form, though - can you go as fast with it that clean?

  • The cadence is slower at post-TI form, but it is faster. I could not swim 100 meters with the pre-TI form and the speed.

  • amazing style. I love TI !

  • Shinji, When I come out to breathe I right now look at an 70 degree angle (almost the corner roof). Shud i b looking parallel to the water instead? Also, I have been using the TI technique of "belly button" breathing which enforces you to turn your body instead. But I notice that turning the shoulders/body causes me to turn my head a lot more for air. Should i rather just keeping my body in place like how it is for a "non-breathing" stroke and simply "turn" my head for air.

  • Answer to your question: "angle of your head"

If you raise your head, you tend to push the water with your leading hand and it makes your lower body sink. Or raising your head simply fatigue your neck.

The best angle is the same as your streamline, i.e. your back and your back of the head is in line.

  • Answer to your question: "belly button"

The center line of your face and that of your body might get out of sync.

You do not want to move your face. You want to synchronize both lines when you roll your body. If your belly button is around the surface and both lines are in sync, your mouth comes out of the water.

  • but when i train is so difficult!!!it's to swim ,no to train

  • Hi Shinji, could you elaborate the main differences please?

I swim 1 mile every time I go to the pool but I feel there is so much inefficiency in my strokes. I've made up my mind to relearn swimming in TI style. I hope I can still break my strokes habit and mold them into TI style. Any advice?

    Thanks :)

  • Total Immersion's approach is to swim more efficiently by 1)getting balanced, 2)reducing drag and 3)create propulsion from your core.

TI also recommends to practice drills to achieve it rather than swimming whole stroke.

You might feel it is ineffective first, but you will agree as you can understand purposes of drills and acquire those skills.

  • Thanks for the reply. I'll watch the TI video again and do some basic drills when I go to the pool this afternoon.

  • I've been focusing a lot of efficiency. And it seems every trip to the pool I notice more and more horrible swimmers slashing around. I am surprised that some people can actually swim more than 1 lap the way they jostle the water. You won't regret learning TI. Good Luck.

  • wow.

  • always good stuff
