I contacted Ms. Grubers former agent and was informed that due to serious back problems she had withdrawn from performing. It makes me very sad, as hers was a very rare voice indeed.
The great Andrea Gruber had gastric-bypass surgery and is now slim and, I assume, healthy. Her career is back on track. She's had to overcome drug addiction and obesity. She is a rare talent; I hope that she can remain vital and productive.
Being a fanof 20th century opera singers, I've cared little for the stars of the past decade. I heard about Gruber around 2004/2005. I hear her Met radio broadcast of Turandot & she was marvelous. But what fascinates me about her is her "bad girl" history. She is the only soprano I've heard of who was a drug addict and something of a rebel. How can she fit into the very disciplined world of opera ? She must have gone through an huge personality transformation.
I am concerned about her weight here.I care not one bit about it other than when she appeared at the MET as Turnadot and as Abigaille she was lithe and athletic.Peter Gelb had it in for her.Gulagina replaced her as Lady Macbeth in the new production prima. Gruber was only the cover.Last time I heard about her she had a great success at Covent Grdn as Minnie opposite Alagna.I hope Gelb hasn't destroyed her as he has tried to do with Ruth Anne Swenson! I saw Gruber's debut in Ballo w/Pavarotti!
She was scheduled to sing Aida in Seattle 2008-2009 Season, and then suddenly, the silver cast Lisa Daltirus was the gold cast.

She hasn't sung there since a run of Turandots in early 2007. She was supposed to sing Lady Macbeth the following season but never quite made it.

Where has she been lately? I hear rumors of a relapse, but don't and don't want to believe!
