Vashti is brilliant. NicK Drakes actual soulmate though was english singer Bridgette St John. He used to tour with her and stay up playing guittar with her. Rare thing for Nick.
It's 2AM and I'm sitting in the dark.. Listening to this and getting goosebumps. So pure and powerful. I feel like she's here in the room, singing to me.
Nick Drake was a shut in. & that's what made him great. He had that tortured genius thing going. All locked in up there with his guitar, as his only outlet. Vashti's reminds me a little of Sandy Denny, mixed with an unplugged Amy Lee.
Vashti is supreme and sublime. Far, far superior to Nick Drake in my opinion. I've got tickets for her show at the Union Chapel on 11th April, and I cannot wait!
Im into alternative rock, indie and psychedelia. I discovered Vashti Bunyan just a few years ago, and was blown away! Breathless! So incredible beautiful. The magic and haunting mood of her songs, transcending all time and trends. Her two albums are now among my top favourites. Divine!
Vashti's not gone! She's a new album out, called Lookaftering. It's about her time between then and now, being a parent. Despite the fact that a lot of people would seem to like her to be the female Nick Drake, she isn't. She just got out when the getting was good and led a normal life - albeit with caravans, dogs, cows and so forth. Good luck to her!
A one-off. Quietly brilliant and from a place of total integrity. Had the great pleasure of seeing her live a couple of years ago. Her music is an act of pure humanity. Even better than Chas 'n' Dave.
One of history's big "ifs...".: I read somewhere that back around 1969-70 that somebody tried to get Vashti & Nick together to work on a song or two but nothing came of the hoped-for collaboration. Kinda sad, but to think what might have happened...but it's good we have the recordings of both Vashti & Nick to enjoy forever.
@hugojrneves Agreed! As a side note here, I read in an interview with Vashti that once there was an attempt to pair her and Nick Drake together and either write some songs and record as a duo around 1970 or thereabouts, but things didn't go as planned and sadly, these 2 great talents never made a record together. Look around online for the interview and read more about it. It's a good read and informative as regards Vashti's life and career.
I'll put up the other version "Winter is Blue (Reprise)" as featured in Peter Whitehead's film: "Tonite Let's all make love in London" where Vashti is recording the song ON FILM IN THE STUDIO. I work for Peter Whitehead, he is a very interesting person.

I saw her perform on the Nick Drake tribute tour recently in Brighton, and she sang well.
She's scheduled for her own gig on the 10th of April - so she's still vital and vocally strong.
