Funny how people say this movie does not hold up. You're kidding right? I, too, am one of those people who believe GoodFellas was the superior film of the 2. However, it does not lessen this brilliant film in any way. This movie was still very deserving of the win and im not actually upset that it did.

Thank you for You Tubing this. This movie; exceptional in every way, told the truth about the history of the horrible atrocities that the Native Americans experienced by early Americans. This is the true American History and this movie captured it deserving the Oscar and more.

Goodfellas, Ghost, Godfather 3 and Dances With Wolves were all good films. Comparing them and saying, "this one is better" is all a personal opinion. It's like saying one color is better than another. It's all a personal opinion. They were all great.
I thought Dances with Wolves was boring. I didn't even watch the whole thing. I watched it for 1 hour and 30 minutes and was bored to tears. It was literally Keavin Costner standing around talking about nothing interesting for an hour and 30 mintues. Goodfellas was much more entertaining and should've won.

Dances with wolves opened up one of America's most shameful historical episodes, that of the virtual extermination of its indigenous inhabitants, in a way that portrayed these people not as the bloodthirsty savages that stood in the way of progress as had been done in the past, but as the highly developed, complex societies that they indeed were. The film was beautifully shot and highly evocative, and that is why it won.

The point is, Dances With Wolves explored a chapter of American history that was long ignored in Hollywood and it captured the minds and hearts of American and international audiences. I like both "Dances with Wolves" and "GoodFellas". They are both excellent films.
This is NOT the biggest fuck-up of the oscars. (Marty should have won for "Raging Bull" not "Ordinary People"). The same people who voted for this were probably the same people who chose "Forrest Gump" over "Pulp Fiction". Both excellent films again, but "feel good emotions" tends to trump "violence" during the oscars. Look at this year, "The King's Speech" beating out "The Black Swan" and "The Social Network".
DWW is a great film, a fresh idea and the first movie in this issue and presented its depth perfectly. Goodfellas was the 25th maffia movie, Godfather and some others won some 128 Oscars in that issue before. I think that is why DWW won the Oscar. And it was a good decision.

Goodfellas is my favorite movie of all time, but awarding the oscar to Dances with wolves seemed only right. Politics plays a *very* significant role with this ceremony, and not only was Dances with wolves a fantastic(and worthy) movie, it was probably the first time in history that Hollywood treated native american culture with a little respect.
While Goodfellas is my personal favorite, it's far from typical Oscar-material. Then again; the world doesn't stop at Hollywood, so who cares?

We just watched the movie for the first time last night and are very happy that this great tribute has been shown to the Indians of whom we love. For the past few weeks we have been doing much research on the history of America and how it relates to the Indians and are shocked at what we are finding to be the REAL story. These tribal ppl are an incredible example to our depraved culture we live in today!!!!! We are so inspired by the movie and all the many things we have learned about these ppl.

Who saw it? Dances grossed $736,000,000 in 2011 dollars (about 9 times as much as Goodfellas). Apparently quite a few people saw it.
I would encourage you to see it too, but you're clearly not bright enough to understand it.

I like both "Dances with Wolves" and "GoodFellas". They are both excellent films.
This is NOT the biggest fuck-up of the oscars. (Marty should have won for "Raging Bull" not "Ordinary People"). The same people who voted for this were probably the same people who chose "Forrest Gump" over "Pulp Fiction". Both excellent films again, but "feel good emotions" tends to trump "violence" during the oscars. Look at this year, "The King's Speech" beating out "The Black Swan" and "The Social Network".

DWW is a great film, a fresh idea and the first movie in this issue and presented its depth perfectly. Goodfellas was the 25th maffia movie, Godfather and some others won some 128 Oscars in that issue before. I think that is why DWW won the Oscar. And it was a good decision.

Goodfellas is my favorite movie of all time, but awarding the oscar to Dances with wolves seemed only right. Politics plays a *very* significant role with this ceremony, and not only was Dances with wolves a fantastic(and worthy) movie, it was probably the first time in history that Hollywood treated native american culture with a little respect.
While Goodfellas is my personal favorite, it's far from typical Oscar-material. Then again; the world doesn't stop at Hollywood, so who cares?

We just watched the movie for the first time last night and are very happy that this great tribute has been shown to the Indians of whom we love. For the past few weeks we have been doing much research on the history of America and how it relates to the Indians and are shocked at what we are finding to be the REAL story. These tribal ppl are an incredible example to our depraved culture we live in today!!!!! We are so inspired by the movie and all the many things we have learned about these ppl.

GoodFellas was full of life, it was like watching a 2 and a half hour long movie trailer. i dont think the academy awarded it best picture, like saving private ryan, was because it was too violent. the academy normally sympathizes with feel good stories.

Ask anyone today who remembers dances with wolves? far less then remember Goodfellas. Oscars should go to films that change cinema and are remembered by people many years afterwards. I hear now friends still talking about the brilliance of goodfellas.
