@tornmask sadly, he is massively underrated, along with rory gallagher, roy buchanan and many others :(, these people created magnificent music. we should at least listen to it! :D
there's something so fantastic about this song and i can't figure out what it is... It seems like it's so controlled and tame, but contains pure concentrated funk which is somehow conveyed in entirety without messy strumming or silly vocal outbursts. Even on low volume it sounds so goooooood

just a rare coming together of some great musicians, one of the uk,s finest rock bands, paul rodgers is legendary status,,the heartbeat of this once great band
@StijnOldenbeuving I hate getting involved in these "who's better" dialogues, but I think that one thing we can agree on is that Andy Fraser's solo was revolutionary for its time (1970... only 5 years after "My Generation" with Entwistle's bass "solos"). You need to remember that this was 5 - 6 years before Jaco Pastorius was turning the bass into a really melodic instrument, and a decade before the bass was regularly starting to be highlighted as anything other than a rhythm instrument.
YES I AGREE, ANDY WAS THE BACKBONE OF THIS SUPERB BAND HE WAS AN INNOVATOR OF SHORT STEM BASS PLAYING AT THE TIME. AND FILLED IN FOR THE GAPS MADE BY KOSS PLAYING A RHYTHM CHORDS ON BASS.GUITAR
I WENT TO SEE ANDYS BAND WHEN FREE BROKE UP. THE BAND WERE CALLED, TOBY. ANDY PLAYED AND SANG ALRIGHT NOW ON THE BASS TRULLY AMAZING .FREE WITHOUT A DOUBT WERE THE BEST BAND TO INTERPRET BLACK BLUES FROM THE STATES AND PUTT IT ON OUR BREAKFAST TABLE TO ACCEPT OR REJECT
The good ole days....I remember when FREE released Fire and Water.....still have the album, 8 track, cassette and CD.........Mr Big took second fiddle to All Right Now - both classics that I still love........memory lane. This live recording was performed back in the 70's shortly after the release of Fire and Water. This was a era of GREAT bands......no question about it.
@slpplexi1969 koss was great,, no doubt, but take a look at pete ham of badfinger, great band with a claptonesque guitarist, but pete ham was is own man, a great all round musician,,regards rob,
Bythe way, bassist Andy Fraser was quite a gifted songwriter himself; he wrote, among others, "Every Kinda People", which was a major hit in the late '70s for Robert Palmer.
Free used to be a staple of American album rock radio back in the early '70s, in an era when you could hear a station play them, The Allman Bros., Joe Cocker, Little Feat, Yes, Zeppelin, Cream, Sabbath, Randy Newman, Mandrill, Hendrix and many others and classify it all as "rock" without any further categorization. Modern classic rock radio plays far too much of the same bands over and over, and that may be a major reason why Free seem to have been to a large extent forgotten. A damn shame.
@slpplexi1969 I can't speak for the stations in your area, but here in New England the classic rock stations play too much hair metal. I have no real problem with it, but they tend to overplay it. I think that it may have something to do with the fact that so many of those bands are still recording and touring, and the radio stations do a lot to help promote those bands' live shows. I'd just like to see a little more variety, is all I meant.
Fantastic performance, Andy Fraser is one of my biggest inspirations on bass for my style of playing, saying that the rest of this group was just as talented, very special band
I have this video on a DVD called Free Forever. Brilliant. I went to see the awesome Paul Rodgers just a few hours ago at Sheffield City Hall. The Bass player was great but he was not Andy , who was a bit special. Its just a comment, Paul has a terrific band on this tour and we had a fantastic night with Joe Elliott`s band Down n Outz as support. If this gig comes any where close to you get your ticket you will love it
@306bad I saw the Newcastle gig on the 18th April- my birthday. Night of my life! I thought the bass player did a cracking job on this - not Andy as you say but he was indeed great and I cheered his solo on this. Amazing gig and no other birthday will be able to top it.
Free is perhaps the most criminally underrated band of them all. Koss's ability to play lead guitar, then seemingly "back into the shadows" when the bass takes the solo, is uncanny. It's almost as if Koss and Andy Fraser switch places during the instrumental break. And of course, with Paul "The Voice" Rodgers, there's no way you could go wrong.
RIP Paul Kossoff. You are more appreciated now (especially here in the States) than you were during your heyday.
Anyone who deos not like this ,should be slapped until they Cheer up! Rock with a funk edge!!! A 4 peice playing like there A*SES were on fire! I have this laser disc! Priceless!
This is awesome. Love the raw sound of Free better than the "polished" sound of Bad Company. Don't get me wrong, Bad Company is a solid group, but compared to Free, Bad Company sounds too glitzy. Free was raw rock.
@dudestr5552 Koss is my favourite guitarist, he weaves a majestic solo in this and the feeling he puts into the music is infectious. Couple Koss with Andys undoubted timing and you have an electric wonderland.
@iziahlights Koss would have to be one of my favorites too (along with Rod Price of Foghat, Scott Gorham of Thin Lizzy, George Harrison, and of course Jimmy Page), and Andy was truly gifted. It's a pity that these guys were only together for four years, and it's criminal that almost no one here in the States knows about their back catalog (all they heard back in the 70s was "All Right Now" and possibly "Wishing Well", especially once Blackfoot covered the latter). Free was extremely underrated.
Paul Rogers quit the band and joined with Mick Ralphs after he left Mott the Hoople. They formed a drug free band called Bad Company. They just got tired of watching their friends killing themselves Mick said.
This is so beautifully constructed - a bit like a mini symphony. One of the cleverest parts is the way that the guitar gives way to the bass emerging as the lead instrument at the end. Above all it is the way all parts of the band are putting their own skills second to the whole. When you remember that these were very young men at the time, this is an astounding achievement.
My Dad got to seem them live twice. once in '70 the other '74. Kossoff's austounding vibrato thechnique blew my dad away.Being a player himself had, he had never seen the technique done so well in front of him.The 74 lineup was diff but was still a good concert. MR. BIG thumbs up
One of the very few ...if only songs where lead bass takes over from lead guitar.. Absolutely beautiful !! ..And not one of them over 21 at the time.. challenge anyone to find such a great track of modern times with guys of such a young age that can beat this muscianship !!
I admire Andy Frasers bass playing on this track it is a great part of this classic song.
I was fortunate to see Free when they were promoting Alright now. It was at Bradford Uni. I was amazed how the three instrument playing dudes, Simon Kirk, Paul Kossof and Andy were able to fill the concert room with and extrodinary sound, It was not loud to make up for the lack of numbers it was just so very good. I will be at Sheffeld City Hall to see Paul and Simon in April.
Yes, the great bassist is still with us - based in California, and has taken a political stance in the support of Barrack Obama. I guess it's just an extension of show business...
Yes, the great bassist still with us - based in California, and has taken a political stance in the support of Barrack Obama. I guess it's just an extension of show business...
@alicelawson You are right on the money, Bass playing is not understood by many people-they would certainly notice if it was not there-but Bass playing is a Dark art, and if you aint' musically knowledgeable it just passes you by. Fraser was fantastic -is he still with us?
Raw, soulful blues rock at its best - these guys have talent coming out of their arse, and at such a young age too. You can't fault this. Paul Kossof's young death was so tragic. RIP
This was the band that members of the super groups of that day listened to. They were ahead of their time in many ways. An influx of different music styles from Motown to Zeppelin, mixed together with their own personal styling. Bad Company came from the ashes and was the more commercial version. Drugs took Koss. This is one of the songs I learned to play guitar from and make music. It's real, real music is people playing together at the same time, it's like making love.
This is Real Music.... while Beatles was doing that boring, crap, pop, shit ,songs, this guys were doing real stuff with Led Zeppelin+Canned Heat +Traffic .... how could people die for Beatles witn all those real bands Rockin' SHAME!!!!!!
@bolhico and now you're talkin shit. Why don't you get a little info on what Beatles was doing during the second half of the 60's. Just check the White album and Abbey road (especially the song I want you - i know you gonna like it).
You know what I love about these old clips ? They were all professionally shot . ( No idiots with .50 cent cell phones wanting to post bragging rights... to ruin a decent performance ). And when they survive like this one they are awesome .
Remember folks, this band was only together for four years. FOUR YEARS!
That's such a short amount of time. No doubt had they stuck it out longer they would have had much greater success. Their talent was just too immense for it not to happen. Still, it's great that people are getting a chance to hear them now.
@knuteboy36 Also remember that when this vid was shot I don't think ANY of the band members were over 21. Had Koss lived a while longer...well, no telling where this band may have gone.
@fuxgood Kossoff left Free long before his death. He formed another band called Backstreet Crawler after leaving Free. He was one of the greatest of all time. Then again, you could say that for the band as a whole.
@fibes55 I didn't mean to say his death per say. Free disbanded because Koss was so far gone with drugs he became unreliable then, after some time spent trying to get his life back, he formed Backstreet Crawler. At least thats the way i understand how things went.
@knuteboy36 I think...I know the lead singer is...Bad Company...mebbe the band as well, just changed their name. Not sure on the band part, just saying !
Just a shame Paul Kossoff was assigned to a different record label - who did not give a flying fuc* about him - and he died from a massive o.d. If he had lived on - cos he was up there with Clapton Peter Green BB KIng et al - more would have come. Wishing Well is his epitaph - I cried when he died.
@amalkadog Sorry old chap. Paul K didnt die of a Drugs overdose. It was a heart attack due to a blood clot like deep vain Trombonist. But i would admit that the drugs didnt help and if he didnt die then it would of been another time. He died 35 yrs ago on last saturday 19th march
@mjpanek68 But Free has Paul in it, so it's automatically 10x better. I like Bad Company, but if Free stayed together I would be happier. The 4 years they were together they made amazing music, so just imagine how awesome their music would have been after they got older and improved as musicians.
@knuteboy36 4 YEARS?? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKINGGGGGGGG ABOUT??? They stars at 1988.. 1st break up is in 1997.. 9 YEARSSSSSSS... then comeback without Paul in 1999.. in 2002 is the second break up, and comeback in 2009.. it a little more than FOUR YEARS to me (:
@dance2theradio PLEASE EXPLAIN... FREE, BAD COMPANY, THE FIRM, SOLO STUFF, BAD CO. AGAIN... I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOUR SAY'N ? AM I MISSING SOMETHING? GET BACK WITH ME... THANX......
The camera work is way ahead of it's time. Such a cool tune and the bell bottoms look amazing!

Most everybody's talking about Kossof's guitar. Has anybody paid attention to Andy Fraser's bass, from around 03:50?
alicelawson 1 year ago
@alicelawson You are right on the money, Bass playing is not understood by many people-they would certainly notice if it was not there-but Bass playing is a Dark art, and if you aint' musically knowledgeable it just passes you by. Fraser was fantastic -is he still with us?

@alicelawson I'm with you here 100%, (shame the director wasn't). Look at the kit tho, minimal at best, and it still knocks the breath out of you

This is Real Music.... while Beatles was doing that boring, crap, pop, shit ,songs, this guys were doing real stuff with Led Zeppelin+Canned Heat +Traffic .... how could people die for Beatles witn all those real bands Rockin' SHAME!!!!!!
bolhico 1 year ago

Still, it's great that people are getting a chance to hear them now.
knuteboy36 1 year ago 33
@knuteboy36 Also remember that when this vid was shot I don't think ANY of the band members were over 21. Had Koss lived a while longer...well, no telling where this band may have gone.
fuxgood 1 year ago
@fuxgood Kossoff left Free long before his death. He formed another band called Backstreet Crawler after leaving Free. He was one of the greatest of all time. Then again, you could say that for the band as a whole.
fibes55 1 year ago
@fibes55 I didn't mean to say his death per say. Free disbanded because Koss was so far gone with drugs he became unreliable then, after some time spent trying to get his life back, he formed Backstreet Crawler. At least thats the way i understand how things went.
fuxgood 1 year ago
@knuteboy36 I think...I know the lead singer is...Bad Company...mebbe the band as well, just changed their name. Not sure on the band part, just saying !
MrAgelessone 1 year ago
@knuteboy36 ...and they were just kids when they recorded this....think Andy Fraser was about 17? Incredible...
eb3be66 1 year ago
Just a shame Paul Kossoff was assigned to a different record label - who did not give a flying fuc* about him - and he died from a massive o.d. If he had lived on - cos he was up there with Clapton Peter Green BB KIng et al - more would have come. Wishing Well is his epitaph - I cried when he died.
amalkadog 11 months ago
@amalkadog Sorry old chap. Paul K didnt die of a Drugs overdose. It was a heart attack due to a blood clot like deep vain Trombonist. But i would admit that the drugs didnt help and if he didnt die then it would of been another time. He died 35 yrs ago on last saturday 19th march
blindboybenton 10 months ago
@knuteboy36 Well Thank God they didn't cuz Bad Company is one of my favorite bands.
mjpanek68 9 months ago
@mjpanek68 But Free has Paul in it, so it's automatically 10x better. I like Bad Company, but if Free stayed together I would be happier. The 4 years they were together they made amazing music, so just imagine how awesome their music would have been after they got older and improved as musicians.
