The facts are these, regardless of what relationships previous dynastic governments had with Tibet, that all changed when the Qing were overthrown. chineseheart, I have met young Tibetans that snuck over the border to India just a few years ago. They are not allowed to follow their culture and be who they are as a people. Even their language is changing, young Tibetans are speaking Tibetan with a mandarin accent. They cant go to monstaries and follow their religion as they wish. Tibet was and is an integral part of China' history. In 1913 DL 13th seceded from China and self-declared Tibet's independence which was not even recognized globally. Once China was strong enough, it retook Tibet. Britain can retake Hong Kong and Japan can retake Manchuria if they have the courage to do so. CCP leaders can sit in there backrooms and decide what is and is not 'docile' at their whim. The people have no say and there is no oversite. The U.S. president answers to congress and the people.
Few chinese will deny that the great leap forward and the cultural revolution were disasters and communism of the past was bad for the masses. But today, the ccp has evolved and is a lot more different from those days.

But I can look at the news every day and see stories of poor rural Chinese being treated like shit by their government. Their homes taken, their lives threatened by pollution. They have no recourse then to riot. That isnt a good system. The facts are these, regardless of what relationships previous dynastic governments had with Tibet, that all changed when the Qing were overthrown. The relationship completely changed and Mao did not treat Tibet with respect but as a conquered colony. The people were not given any options, they were conquered and told they were liberated. Now monostaries that once held thousands of monks can only have a few hundred, the CCP wants to control Tibetan life and culture. That isn't liberation.

chineseheart, I have met young Tibetans that snuck over the border to India just a few years ago. They are not allowed to follow their culture and be who they are as a people. Even their language is changing, young Tibetans are speaking Tibetan with a mandarin accent. They cant go to monstaries and follow their religion as they wish. One of the young men I met wasnt even religious, he just couldnt stand living in a police state with Chinese secret police watching his every move.

Tibet was and is an integral part of China' history. In 1913 DL 13th seceded from China and self-declared Tibet's independence which was not even recognized globally. Once China was strong enough, it retook Tibet. Britain can retake Hong Kong and Japan can retake Manchuria if they have the courage to do so. So you are saying that even though Tibet was not truly run by the Qing dynasty, but was more of a tribute country that had a few representatives of the Qing in Lhasa and was self ruled, that modern China, not Qing era China, has the right to take over the country, remove its governement, destroy ancient monasteries and move in Han people? doesn't add up.

Ok, the Dalai Lamas have been the rulers of Tibet since the 17th century. You Chinese decide to change that regardless of how the Tibetan people feel about it. Your attitude is one of arrogance and superiority. You look down on the beliefs of the Tibetans and only allow them to follow their beliefs as long as it doesn't inconveniance the Han. Lastly, the Dalai Lama has not been speaking of secession but of greater autonomy for Tibet.

The chinese troops will likely march down the streets of H Kong if the local police can't control the peace and security there or if H Kong populace decide to rebel against the central ccp govt.
To the ccp govt, an autonomous region can run the local govt administration (like in Hong Kong) but not the army and foreign affairs.

The main problem is this: if the CCP does not respect the religion of Tibet and will always try to interfere with the religious practices of Tibetans i.e. limiting the number of monks and controlling what is taught, then it is not an autonomous region but an occupied colony. Having soldiers there to control the region is a sign of disrespect and distrust of the entire population of Tibet.

I live on the border of Utah tarinxx, you don't know what you are talking about. When the mormon church agreed to end polygamy they only did it so they could join the Union. They decided for themselves to do it, it wasn't forced on them by U.S. troops. Then several groups split away and continued the practice, even to today. The feds don't worry about it unless there are children involved and child abuse becomes the central issue. There are mormon polygamists all over the place.

But that doesn't make polygamy (or bigamy) legal. Polygamy is still illegal in all 50 states.
