it is calculated that the van allen belt wouldnt make the astronauts get more then 1-2 rad when they flew out. this is insanly little since you will begin thorwing up and get rad sick at 100-200 rad. also NASA was very careful about any sunflares since they might have had an effect on the astronauts but when they wear out in space they wouldnt get any huge amount of radiation since there was no sunflares.
