Yo, The Resident. I love your videos but can you do another one like Cuerpo Sin Alma? That video was awesome.
Politics and pop culture have or are starting to merge more than ever. Evidenced by Barack Obama constantly being in the gossip sections. The guy has enough to do already without having to worry about what shoes he is wearing. Anyway, about what you are talking about, I think part of the reason is that no one has values anymore. I don't mean religious. I mean they ride whatever wave comes along. people don't know who they are.
In this video you are in 'the spotlight' ... are you saying you want to be the next big thing? Yet you don't want to be sucked dry... I bet even Paris didn't want to be.
Interesting technique adds a different spin on the message.
the masses... the masses ... the masses... the masses... it's called a thesaurus
and instead of trying to be creative by posting some ridiculous quip on youtube wondering what the next mindless distraction will be, .why don't you make a short video telling people to read and educate themselves on what's REALLY going on in the world rather than what the media tells them. but math science and geography would be a good start.
I think The Resident has made plenty of videos touching upon serious subjects, all of which offers an interesting alternative to corporate media and pop culture. Adding to that, your initial comment about using a thesaurus seems a bit rude considering its a ad hominem attack, and has little to do with the issues expressed in the video.
Knowledge is accessible, particularly concerning word conflict, suffering, death. However there needs to be a will for the people to strive for such knowledge
The current onslaught of stoooopid "reality" paranormal TV shows is what's dumbing down our society at the moment. It's out of control. Let's hope that it's having it's peak and will soon be a ghost itself. "Reality" shows in general are out of hand and are anything but reality.
During every generation the old farts always say that "the kids of this generation are out of hand". But now everyone has to admit that this generation is fucking boring. I'm not impressed!
I think there was a time when Disney, or popculture for that matter had some fuel that was worth running on. But it gave up on trying to have that, the people who run the machine made sure of it. It now runs on what they want it to run on, what they want us to run on; the fuel isn't found Lori, it's provided. Those bright lights are pointed at one spot directly, then when they see fit, or get bored, the lights fade and shift. Exactly like Disney too.
However I have a lot of admiration for Disney Corp as a global entity. This isn't the ideal forum to debate and or post the many facets of an iconic American Corporation but to seemingly judge Disney's merit based on the "poptarts" segment is baseless.
Facts is...young people will always go wild over their hyped up peer popstars. And Disney will roll them out for ur kids and grandkids..just like it did when U were that age. Market Determines.
I wouldn't call the video arrogant. I think she is right. Although I agree she can be arrogant at times. But I think she does hit the nail on the head quite often.

Pop culture will never offer substance. Because the artists and entertainers with substance get looked over. There are amazing artists out there yet they will never catch the eye of pop culture because people are STUPID. And I'm ok with it. Just stay away from the good artists I like and dont ruin them. Then we'll be ok. :)
Any discussion of pop culture is self-extinguishing...since no one is going to admit to being a contributing member of the mindless cult that so characterizes it.
Perhaps if one perceived and dealt with our culture as suffering from a form of disease, we could then admit to our collective affliction, and unify in the search for a cure...perhaps we'd all wear chatreuse ribbons.
Pop culture is a reflection of the culture at large. The outrageousness of pop culture over the last few years is a reflection of the what had been going on in America and the world in general. What with the unjust wars, political lies from our leaders, over spending and investment speculation that got completely out of hand until the world experienced a financial meltdown. All of a sudden the carrying on's of this or that Hollywood bimbo seemed rather unimportant and trite.
You can be sure that where our political, financial and social culture goes in the future our popular culture is sure to follow and mirror back to us.
The popculture spotlight, may be monetarily driven. When a small popular event occurs,it seems the big star makers glom on quickly. If there is a buck to be made, corporations dive for it.
With any luck,"reality" television will fade from favor. But,with karma being what it is,soon, movies will be shot based on past "reality" shows and stars.
You know what's sad and done to death? That hackneyed way of cutting between different angles crossed with Apple-esque advertising minimalism that FLOODS YouTube. I had hoped that you'd be above that awful trend.
Whatever the hell you do, DON'T start making make up tutorials.
Blasphemer! Pray for forgiveness: Our Culture, Who art in Disney Hallowed be thy fads Thy media come Thy will be done On Earth as it is in reality shows Give us this day our daily meme And forgive us our paparazzi As we forgive those who insult Taylor Swift And lead us not into real news But deliver us from thinking. Amen. In the name of the Britney, and the Taylor, and the holy Miley, Amen.
It seems the pop culture machine is working better than ever. They've already found their next victims--Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, and maybe those Twilight characters(I think this one will fizzle out quicker though).
"It's impossible to predict..."
Hmmm, I don't know about that. The producers of this garbage are about as mindless as the fodder they churn out. Basically, it's the same garbage by a different name.
This is true, NsaneNtheNbrane - they aren't very imaginative. Although I include Miley and those bros to be part of the Disney-characters-made-of-kids batch. :)
Lori, I've been a fan of your videos for years now, but I was looking back and realized that I used to love your work because it was fun. Now, seems like it's always about a really serious (not fun) subject all the time. What is happening?, I like your point of view of things and the new subjects are interesting, but I miss the funness of your videos =(
I totally agree i know she got the tv deals and all but this is on the not fun side of things, still like the message just need that umphhh back you know.
You mean me talking about porn on the street the other week wasn't fun? Or my clown audition? hahaha. Maybe you've only been catching the serious ones and missing the fun ones. Either way, I think you'll enjoy next week's! :)
Yeah, the one about porn was funny, I guess I'm just full of all those news and subjects. I'm not even american, wait unitedstatian, lol, and I've had enough of all that. I know those serious subjects are probably the ones that pay the bills, haha but I love your videos when you go to the streets and talk about some more light stuff! Anyway, I love your work, keep 'em coming =)
great just say that you wrote it and i am a fan with a capital F. really i had stopped hoping for such observations on youtube. i loved it. and its very true. the same problem is with other machines of our contemporary lives as well.
I favorited this video. Disney wants to own everything - which would not necessarily be a bad thing - if eveything they produced wasn't mindless dribble.
They want the lights to dim on the bogus 'Green' scam. They want you to mindlessly believe the nonsense... so that the country will blindly accept Goldman's shadowy 'Cap & Trade' racket.
Really, Ramking61? So you believe that your computer is powered on gumdrops and happy dreams? Tell you what, why don't you stick a fork in a light socket so you can be filled with those dreams. Go ahead, do it. We'll wait.
That's a very accurate metaphor, Lori. Almost like the Eye of Sauron scanning the horizon of a blasted heath for any signs of life to feed on.
The next big thing will be driven by economics as always, whoever has the most spending power will be appealed to. As the population gets increasingly older on average, don't be surprised if some old favourites get resurrected, reanimated and couched in new technology.
Lori, you are Absolutely Sweet in this video! God, I was melting in my chair when I saw this "cute thing you have done with your hair at the top". You are one of the most charming, intelligent, beautiful and, from today, cute! I had to watch this video 4 times actually. 3 times, I was mesmerized by your cute hair thing. And the 4th time, I actually "Got the video". I want to meet you at least for a coffee when I am in New York next time from Singapore! God Bless, Lori!
Actually the Canadian comedy troupe LRR or Loading Ready Run quite successfully created a number of deliberate viral videos. One even made it to a mention on late night TV. People thought it was an actual, viral video.
Lori, as a child of the 80s, I see many parallels between that decade and our current one. Both were about corporate and personal greed, as well as living in excess. But in 1991-92 everything pretty much shifted overnight to the down-trodden and disenfranchised. The wealthy family in Growing Pains went to the struggling family in Rosanne. Pop Metal to Grunge. Digital Underground to Dr. Dre. I believe that the culture arising from the people who have lost their jobs and homes...
I hope it's going to be something including grown ups. Teen idols are scary. Adulthood no longer something you look forward to, since apparently, it's when you're a teen you reach the pinnacle of your life.
Right now Sarah is the "next big thing". In our culture "arm waving crazy" is just about the same thing as "GOD". Well, it's always been like that, on now there is "media". The good news is we don't live forever, basic life is not a big game, and if we are reincarnated, we won't be able to join up with the forces of crazy until we start school.
I like the video 5 stars.. I think the next big thing is AmericaTEC(dot)com, along with the evolving concept of ultimately actualizing a second (AR) American Renaissance, if not then yes we can wobble right into the next Dark Ages...
As Dutch.. for the pop culture I like to listen to WRD 4, German radio. For myself I like to listen to Armin van Buuren, best DJ in the world. He might use older, pop/classic and other kinds of music, make it brighter, by making it acceptable for a larger group of people. For instance.. take Tiesto and his adagio for strings. (drama). There's no one who aks themselves what's the real play of it without listening to Tiesto's version. But when they listen to that, loots want hear the Barber vers.

(cont.) ...will give rise to a new, less flashy and shallow view in pop culture...At least for a short time.

Great message. And really liked the text popping up on the screen. (That red/black Courier font worked really well.)

I like the video 5 stars.. I think the next big thing is AmericaTEC(dot)com, along with the evolving concept of ultimately actualizing a second (AR) American Renaissance, if not then yes we can wobble right into the next Dark Ages...

The Resident should be the Next Big Thing. But it'll probably just be another anorexic blond with no talent and nothing of value to say to the world.
