Mom wasn't interested in getting us out of there or divorcing him or doing anything else to rock the boat, and she didn't want us getting him in trouble with the police or otherwise rocking the boat either. So I just had to tough it out, keep my grades up and enlist with the Air Force as soon as I could. That's one way to get out of a godawful house, I guess.
It never really felt like a home because of him; it was just a place where I ate and slept. Pretty rotten deal there.

Secondly the distance that that this pernicious abuse creates in maintaining any kind of close relationship to others, peers etc.
