The bass sounds like it's taking a leisurely stroll...and oh my god, what have they done with Steven Morris' brilliant drumming? This song used to sound like Berlin post WW2...these fools made it sound like Barbados on holiday. This REINTERPRETATION is infuriatingly droll, boring and brings absolutely no further insight to the song as a whole.

This is a great interpretation of this song. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I think you've managed to capture the spirit of the music while adding your own personal touches, thus making it sound original and refreshing.

That is an exact quote from their website and also from the CD as well (I purchased it when it first came out-I really love Beck's cover of Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat"). The WarChild organization asked artists (in this case the remaining artists) to chose a song and the artist they wanted to do it.
I think it is pretty clear that the remaining members of 'Joy Division' (aka, 'New Order, sans Ian Curtis who committed suicide in 1980), chose Hot Chip deliberately because they were looking for a more 'upbeat' cover of their song. Joy Division was a post-punk band that was known as 'gloomy' and 'brooding'. Hot Chip is known as a 'bright', 'irreverent' and 'good-natured' band and the Joy Division members knew this.
I think the reason why so many people don't like this cover is because it is sooooo different from the original. Those who love Joy Division love them because of their 'distraught', 'tense/anxious' music, so it is hard for them to listen to a beloved song sung in such a 'playful' and 'quirky' manner.
As far as joy div covers, this one's not that bad. i.e. it's a lot better than the killers' pop-cheese version of shadowplay... at least hot chip made it a little more creative instead of just selling it out to the teen idol masses.

With a song as epic as Transmission, or any Division songs for that matter, any modifying or covering what so ever is simply an abomination. With the obvious exception of New Order.
This is not so much as a cover as it is a brilliant new twist to the dark input Joy Division gave this song. These guys created not a ripp off or a violation, but a whole new ( well...eeehhrr...quite a bit of kraftwerk influence) input to it!!!...and as a whole....yes on my list...(and I am a Joy Division Guardian.....don't cover them if you can't!!!!)

oh my god, it actually is :/ i love hot chip, but i also love joy division so this is saddening, but not that saddenning since i also like material girl.

I'd consider myself fairly open minded when it comes to cover versions of songs, but there are some songs which should just be left as they are and not tampered with. People claim this to be a new and different take on the origional, but in my view it's just been destroyed. With a song as epic as Transmission, or any Division songs for that matter, any modifying or covering what so ever is simply an abomination. With the obvious exception of New Order.
Overall; this offends me.

This is not so much as a cover as it is a brilliant new twist to the dark input Joy Division gave this song. These guys created not a ripp off or a violation, but a whole new ( well...eeehhrr...quite a bit of kraftwerk influence) input to it!!!...and as a whole....yes on my list...(and I am a Joy Division Guardian.....don't cover them if you can't!!!!)

I am an old joy div fan and this is a brilliant mix. The key here is it is a twist on the song in a modern way.. I love it.

Oh come on, how many Love will tear us apart covers have we endured!?! Im thinking fall out boy, absolutely terrible. Shadowplay by the Killers, pretty naff.
This cover is decent, considering. It was done for charity and most likely quickly produced and not taken too serisously. Its funky and enjoyable- its not meant to replace the orginal.

Well said, this is deffinitly the best cover of a Joy Division song (not counting live new order covers obviously) I've ever heard.
A brilliant track which has its own character and not just selling on being written by Joy Division.

I love both versions of this song, Joy Division created a slice of genius and Hot Chip interpreted it in their own way. Kudos to both bands! =)

We all get too entrenched in the things we love and often won't give new things a chance. I love the Joy Division, but I have to admit this cover is nothing short of brilliant! Asking if it's better than the original is an apples and oranges arguement. Just appreciate it for what it is.
Personally, I love this re-interpertation of the song. It makes me think Jon and Vangelis meets Kratfwerk covering JD.

pretty good, it's growing on me. obviously the original is best, but then i don't think hot chip meant to better it. very original and hopefully may get more folks into joy division.

i obviously prefer the original, but his cover is great. hot chip are confident and talented enogh to not just copy and walk in the same foot prints. they make their own twist and that's what making a interesting and good cover is all about. i'm sure curtis would love this.
