  • It's not if this is a good cover or not. Joy division's original is unbeatable. However their take on this song is interesting in a new age of music & should be respected. Their paying homage to joy division, get into it.

  • chale k mal

  • this version is hilarious and awesome, people should pull the sticks out of their rectums

  • Honestly, I love this cover~ and I LOVE the original as well!

  • You don't have to love it, just appreciate the reinterpretation. Joy Division is not an easy band to cover.

  • NO............ you have ruined this song. This is absolute shit.

  • Too slow.....bland...bloody awful!

  • This had a chance until the ridiculous vocal sound came in...

  • horrible cover, this should have never been done.

  • I kind of like it

  • Im a massive fan of Hot Chip but this cover really is awful.

  • I feel an epileptic dance coming on...dear friends, this is awful...

  • wtf????

  • One word... WANK

  • @UKWoodSea one word to you- RETARD

  • Amazing cover

  • Oh come on this is brilliant!

  • Ok, all I'll say, the original is better, this is garbage, yes I DO have an open mind, I listen to the most fucked up shit, this is just making an original masterpiece and turning into "blippity bloopy" shit, fuck this cover

  • @DarkLuffay dick

  • this is..... j-just wow. i can't belive what im hearing.

  • As a Hot Chip and Joy Division fan, not to mention a HUGE cover fan, I just have to say that this one isn't my favorite. It isn't horrible, by any means (see Smashing Pumpkins Isolation), but it really isn't fantastic either (see Hawksley Workman's Love Will Tear Us Apart). It is different, and it is alright, but nothing to write home about. Hot Chip's original material as of late is so much better!

  • All the urgency and bleakness have completely been leached out of this song. The bass sounds like it's taking a leisurely stroll...and oh my god, what have they done with Steven Morris' brilliant drumming? This song used to sound like Berlin post WW2...these fools made it sound like Barbados on holiday. This REINTERPRETATION is infuriatingly droll, boring and brings absolutely no further insight to the song as a whole.

    My two cents.

  • Often covers fall short, and sometimes the excel. Case in point when Dylan heard Jimi's cover of All Along the Watchtower, he stated that he knew that song would forever belong to Hendrix. Whether you agree or not in this case at least try and approach it with an open mind. I for one love this "cover" of this song. You may not prefer it to the original, but it is by no means bad either.

  • It's not as bad as smashing pumpkins crap cover of Isolation.

  • IM A MASSIVE JOY DIVISION FAN BUT THIS AINT TO BAD ITS TRIED TO MAKE THE SONG THERE OWN AND NOT COPY THE ORIGINAL HATS OFF

  • @MrPuppypups i agree im a huge Factory fan and i really like this version

  • Currently on repeat Sexiest song ever!

  • Joy division are the best band in this world,And the original pwns this but I do think its a good cover.

  • que buena rola solo para deleiatr mis sentidos hahaha

  • Sorry, I like Hot Chip fine, but this is a terrible cover of a great song.

  • The point of covering a song is to change it up and re-interpret it, sometimes going so far as to change up the genre. If Hot Chip or any other band just spat back out exactly what was originally recorded, the cover would be unsuccessful and extremely boring. Hot Chip re-doing Joy Division's song, which is a cool song, still makes it cool. Just cool in a different way.

  • ye gods people, this isn't actually a bad cover. Do I accept that hot chip arn't a patch on Joy Division? Gladly, but they've kept the minimalist sound of the song, and done something different with it. If you want to get uptight about travesties of Joy division covers, go and watch Brandon Flowers maul shadowplay

  • kraftwerk 2010

  • hmmmmmm Gay!

  • Woah I should not like this, but woah! I liked! great job!

  • this is a great great great cover.

  • are you f***ing kidding me what the hell is this shit i'm being completely open minded in saying if your going to cover a song don't do your best to destroy it!!!! I'm pretty sure this would offend Ian C's ears aggggh!!! leave the song as it is!! Joy Division live on forever!!!

  • boring

  • boring

  • Shades of JD meets Kraftwerk. Sometimes the cover exceed the original, as in this case. Don't get uptight about it. Just dance, dance, dance to the radio.

  • @LeCutter As good a cover as this is I really don't think it exceeds the original...

  • @Eddemer Why compare? That's not the point... The remake is absolutely rocking! Besides, respect for remaking this song instead of Boy George for eg. :)

  • @djuri1985 I was merely replying to somebody else that had said this cover was better than the original, I agree there should be no comparison when they're totally different styles

  • man! dont blame joy division u_u

  • great COVER. adding the Hot Chip sound element to it. both the original & this cover are great tunes.

  • Wtf is this shit? And shut up you faggot-fucked 'fans'

  • this sucks

  • You got your Hot Chip in my Joy Division! You got your Joy Division in my Hot Chip! Like peanut butter and chocolate, I like it.

  • Meh. Could have been much worse. I personally don't really like it because it doesn't have nearly as much emotion as the original. Please don't shoot me.

  • This is a great interpretation of this song. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I think you've managed to capture the spirit of the music while adding your own personal touches, thus making it sound original and refreshing.

I'll be posting my own cover of this song soon. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed listening to yours.

    Cheers!

  • This is not heart felt, just an artsy fartsy cover. Go rape someone else's work...

  • @PunkRockFist im sure the lads will take your advice and do it exactly as you want it next time round dopey.thank you hot chip for a refreshingly original cover.fuck the begrudgers

  • ta co las bolas el cover xD

  • i prefer the original, but the intent is different of course. not bad.

i didn´t know that band, but i think i should, they will play in brazil with smashing pumpkins and pavement, it will be great!

  • wow this is crazy really cool i think just as good as joy divisions i would say

  • i hope hot chip drowns in acid

  • F-ing awesome! Dance dance dance dance dance to the radio

  • not bad, sure i'll get sick of it though just like all other popular dance music fades in and out, with the exception of the happy mondays and new order of course.

  • Ummmm....... I LOVE Hot Chip but.......

  • The beginning (before the base came in) sounded like Michael Jackson's Billy Jean!

  • i want hot chip to cover "love will tear us apart" by Joy Division!

  • The first time I ever heard Joy Division was when they performed this on The Old Grey Whistle Test. I think it's quite an inventive cover (as far as any cover can be "inventive"), and I think that of all the music I like, Joy Division might be the hardest to cover well.

So you are setting the bar pretty high.

  • intro sounds like material girl

  • Also ich mag diesen Song. Besonderst wenn es schon etwas später ist. :-)

  • i like it but hate the gay vocoding and the kettle drums sound out of place, shoulda used another sound there, but yeh i like it, im stoned so feel the need to listen tpo music tonight, allyballybeaut

  • joy division are definitely a hard band to cover, so even though it doesn't really convey the intense emotion of the original i'm gonna cut them some slack cause that's nearly impossible. at least they had some interesting ideas and made it sound cool. they get points for that.

  • no dont call everyone "haters" everyone with a set of ears can recognize how truly shit this "cover" is. Its like a robot with fisher price instruments, pissing all over the greatest band in history.

  • I love Hot Chip. At least they had a go. I Wouldn't of.

  • big fan of Hot Chip, but i'm not so sure about this, although they have nice covers, this one is too naive for me, takes out all the mystic that JD transmits on their music.

  • Good this

  • it's a good cover in their version. (:

  • Comment removed

  • fuckin great

  • I'm not big on Hot Chip, but I appreciate the version here...Thought I couldn't hear another vocoder, but they make it percolate...At first I was like, they covered another JD song? But no, the other I was thinking of was the Killers...sigh...They are perhaps, a bit over-referenced...Some should cover/rework the Associate's 'Message-Oblique-Speech' and put JD back in the cellar to preserve and further age like fine wine:)

  • I treat JD like a bottle of JD...I come home, start off with small shots and before I know it, I've downed the bottle, woke up the next day and thought 'what the fuck!?!?!' - and then had a another drink...

  • Nice cover! All of the haters can go sit on a tack!

Covers are meant to be played with, otherwise you end up with a bland-assed karaoke version!

And yes, I love Joy division. They were a great band. I think Ian would laugh himself silly over this. (While dance dance dancing to the radio!)

  • retro cover, respect to ian curtis

  • fuckin sucked not wat iwas looking for dont live

  • why do u haters botha lookin at this video if ure not prepared to listen to a cover with an open mind

  • horrible cover, doesn't bring out the energy of the original at all

  • stop hating its all for charity

  • Argh :( this is terrible. I thought it was going to be great.

  • Great cover!

  • whta murder!! what do you to the perfect song of joy division!!!

  • shite

  • Great cover. I can understand the lyrics just fine. Are you deff?

  • Why does he even bother to sing, it's not as if you can hear the lyrics

  • original, but boring

  • actually it is not original at all

  • This is rather lovely in fact.

  • fckin perfect !!!!

  • love this

  • hipsters...

  • good morning 21th century!

  • fuck u and ur 21century!!! the origial is the best!!

  • theres no point in being 'faithful' or reverential when doing covers...thats the friggin point...its a REINTERPRETATION

    this is cool

    wake up you sad losers

  • @quantize that's the best thing about a cover, making it sound different, it's a 'cover' not a 'copy', the creativity is the difference. Great tune.

  • very nice cover! i love the original cause it's tense and dramatic, but happy and funky does it for me too :)

  • what the FUCK did they do to Joy Division.

  • HATE IT. i prefer the original version

  • the horror...

  • bullshit

  • i like how they interpreted the 'dance to the radio' part....other than that i think it could have been better made overall... like lobezmt said: we like the tension in ians voice

  • This actually makes me want to dance, dance, dance to the radio.

  • askooooo!!!

  • Very cool interpretation... Love both Joy Division and Hot Chip... I think Joy Division did the right thing in inviting Hot Chip to make this cover of their great song... Reminds me of the very different cover of PIL's song 'This Is Not A Love Song' done by Nouvelle Vague...

  • joy divsion is no more. what do you mean inviting Hot Chip to make the cover?

  • "We asked 15 ultimate icons to select a favourite song from their classic back catalogue and to nominate the new act they most trust to create a unique interpretation of that hand-picked track."

  • im sorry but im still confused (genuinely). So you mean you asked hot chip to select a song to cover? because earlier you wrote "I think Joy Division did the right thing in inviting Hot Chip to make this cover of their great song..."

  • I didn't mean to confuse. That is an exact quote from their website and also from the CD as well (I purchased it when it first came out-I really love Beck's cover of Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat"). The WarChild organization asked artists (in this case the remaining artists) to chose a song and the artist they wanted to do it.

  • I think it is pretty clear that the remaining members of 'Joy Division' (aka, 'New Order, sans Ian Curtis who committed suicide in 1980), chose Hot Chip deliberately because they were looking for a more 'upbeat' cover of their song. Joy Division was a post-punk band that was known as 'gloomy' and 'brooding'. Hot Chip is known as a 'bright', 'irreverent' and 'good-natured' band and the Joy Division members knew this.

  • I think the reason why so many people don't like this cover is because it is sooooo different from the original. Those who love Joy Division love them because of their 'distraught', 'tense/anxious' music, so it is hard for them to listen to a beloved song sung in such a 'playful' and 'quirky' manner.

  • I know what a tit lopezmt. He must still be living in the 80's

  • I used to like Hot Chip for a bit of a laugh.

This is one laugh too far - just binned my hot chip.

  • This sucks.

    I hope more warchilds die.

    And hot chip too.

    bye.

  • I dunno. I think it's kind of genki.

  • This makes me really sad. i need to hear the original now...

  • Lame version but I love this song so much....needs a bit more angst Hot Chip!

I need to hear the original now.

  • awful :|

  • no me latio su version esta aburrida aunqe hot chip rifa (h) :)

  • load of shite

  • I quite like this a different take on a brilliant live track

never did go down well on vinyl

still prefer the original but this is good

    RIP Ian......

  • Bien igual, es Hot Chip

    No esperen a Joy Division.

    Bien Hot Chip, DANCE!!

  • murdered the original!

  • i wad specting a lot more from hot chip

  • They're playing this song in Old Navy stores, now.

  • Oh gawd i hope not.. D:

  • Comment removed

  • meh...i expect more from hot chip

  • it´s madonna´s material girl ! how this could happen?

  • oh my god, it actually is :/ i love hot chip, but i also love joy division so this is saddening, but not that saddenning since i also like material girl.

  • I'd consider myself fairly open minded when it comes to cover versions of songs, but there are some songs which should just be left as they are and not tampered with. People claim this to be a new and different take on the origional, but in my view it's just been destroyed. With a song as epic as Transmission, or any Division songs for that matter, any modifying or covering what so ever is simply an abomination. With the obvious exception of New Order.

    Overall; this offends me.

  • A great coverversion!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think thats is in the spirit of JOYDIVISION

  • the kraftwerk influence fit well, of course gives another input, just as 'gyqz' wrote, but its still good!

  • This is not so much as a cover as it is a brilliant new twist to the dark input Joy Division gave this song. These guys created not a ripp off or a violation, but a whole new ( well...eeehhrr...quite a bit of kraftwerk influence) input to it!!!...and as a whole....yes on my list...(and I am a Joy Division Guardian.....don't cover them if you can't!!!!)

  • i love too much

  • I really enjoyed listening to Hot Chip's interpretation of this classic song. This version gives off a totally different vibe and atmosphere to the original song.

  • I am an old joy div fan and this is a brilliant mix. The key here is it is a twist on the song in a modern way.. I love it.

  • ....original = classic

    this = phizzz shit

  • Oh come on, how many Love will tear us apart covers have we endured!?! Im thinking fall out boy, absolutely terrible. Shadowplay by the Killers, pretty naff.

This cover is decent, considering. It was done for charity and most likely quickly produced and not taken too serisously. Its funky and enjoyable- its not meant to replace the orginal.

  • Well said, this is deffinitly the best cover of a Joy Division song (not counting live new order covers obviously) I've ever heard.

A brilliant track which has its own character and not just selling on being written by Joy Division.

  • This makes me sick.....

  • This make me sick, then i love this so.... ;-)

  • Oh dear...

  • this is so wrong on so many levels, it makes me sick

  • ummm...not cool. not cool at all.

  • I love both versions of this song, Joy Division created a slice of genius and Hot Chip interpreted it in their own way. Kudos to both bands! =)

  • I really like this cover. :D

  • i was scared of what to think of a band liek hot chip to cover joy division, this actually very good, origainal and still no too over th top, 10/10 cover ;)

  • Very different. Kudos to Hot Chip for having the balls to tackle this song in a very original way, even if it isn't to everyones taste.

  • This is amazing! I love the Joy Division original, but I'm also a big fan of Hot Chip. I think this version is great.

  • i dont like

  • Hey this is different , i think i like it!

  • crap, runined a great song

  • Nice, has a good atmosphere to it, a very dark wave sound as well.

  • it's okay..... definitely different if hooky approves of it I guess I do too!

  • We all get too entrenched in the things we love and often won't give new things a chance. I love the Joy Division, but I have to admit this cover is nothing short of brilliant! Asking if it's better than the original is an apples and oranges arguement. Just appreciate it for what it is.

Personally, I love this re-interpertation of the song. It makes me think Jon and Vangelis meets Kratfwerk covering JD.

  • great cover!

  • pretty good, it's growing on me. obviously the original is best, but then i don't think hot chip meant to better it. very original and hopefully may get more folks into joy division.

  • love it

  • bought the album .. this tarck 7 is savage !!!! love it

  • I like it. Its so different. Hot Chip have really taken an origonal approach to this mighty Joy Division song.

  • swag

  • It is alright, but will never go near, equal or surpass the original

  • Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring

I wouldn't have known it was Transmission unless it had said... and the vocals.... oh dear. I know covers can work wonderfully with a different style on them, but this... no, sorry.

  • im with you laurence,

i'm sorry but it in my opinion this is bloody hideous

  • this is horrible

  • this sux

  • i obviously prefer the original, but his cover is great. hot chip are confident and talented enogh to not just copy and walk in the same foot prints. they make their own twist and that's what making a interesting and good cover is all about. i'm sure curtis would love this.

  • adds a new dimension to the jumpy and energetic original, i like it

  • I don't think that Hot Chip are suited to Joy Division covers, more like New Order songs :P Still a strange cover.

  • Uhh...

It's not meant to be like the original...

I like it...The original is great but...This version is great too..

    Hot Chip FTW

  • this is terrible

  • ::cringe::

  • this really doesnt work as well as it should. i thought hot chip would really add to this songs energy but its been made far too minimalist and flat for my liking, a shame

  • I was really looking forward to this version, but its not for me
