I never liked this voice...but here it is less bad...he sang too long, and the voice was closer to poured vinegar than poured honey, but Caruso, Gigli and Lanza Bjoerling were too much to be measured against......for any singer

You had the same reaction I did.

It is his artistic choices, more than his voice (which is also good) that blew me away when I first heard him. He knows when to speed up, slow down, when to punch it, when to be soft.

More than any tenor I have heard, he just invariably "gets it right".

I find him uncanny.

Tenors like him (tenore di gracia) don't exist anymore. The technique simply got lost in time. It's a singing that comes from the heart. It requires sensibility and taste that are impossible to spawn in modern times. A pity, because you can find lots of singers with more technique and more powerful voices then Schipa or Gigli, but only them can lift you by the soul.

In the just "Post Caruso" period, I always felt that Gigli wsa more of a "Tenore Drammatico", and Schipa was more the "Tenore Lyrico" at least that is how Victor in the U.S. presented them. Although listening to some of Schipa's dramatic work, I have to amend my opinion. He carries himself very will with dramatic parts as well as lyric parts. All a part of marketing I guess.
