  • Saw this show in Denver in '73. Saw many shows here in the early 70's. This one was the best.

  • best jethro tull album ever

  • They are just as good "live" as on the albums....

  • THANK YOU for your efforts to put together live APP!! I ALWAYS thought this work was brilliant. Oddly enough it was the ONLY JT album I actually bought. I was 14 or 15 & probably a bit odd, since I became enamored of APP especially! (probably stll a bit strange) I'm now on a quest to see/ hear EVERYTHING JT did. Such brilliance. Live shows particularly mesmerizing because of Ian A's awesome showmanship. BTW I THINK he was very sexy. Here I am at 50 (young 50 I hope) lusting for a genius!!!

  • I saw this concert in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 13, 1973, the second time the band ever performed the Passion Play. It was one of the most mesmerizing, magical experiences of my life. I can vividly remember this concert as if it were yesterday and not over 36 years ago!

  • I'm so jealous. What Tull fan wouldn't give his right arm to have been there.

  • I was at the first of 2 PP Houston shows and I can confirm - what we witnessed that night was so far ahead of its time that I cannot recall a better show from that, or any, era. Man, those guys played their hearts out!

  • Oh, I sure know that. My first Tull concert was 1976. I have seen them 12 times.

  • As with all bands in that era. Record first then live show.

  • Was the LP released prior to the concerts or was this the "debut" for all the concert goers? I don't know which would have been better,,,to see this after I'd been able to familiarize myself with the music and know what awesome stuff was coming up...or just go in cold turkey and try to keep up with waht was going on!!! And a lot was going on!!!

  • Ian and the band wrote the book on multi-tasking back in the day. It was not uncommon for them to tour while writing new material and recording. They always kept a full plate while touring 11 months out of the year. I saw them every year from 1972 thru 1978. Mostly at Cobo Arena in Detroit. Simply Amazing.

  • I saw this live at the Capital Center in Landover Maryland. It was by far the greatest show ever. I was 3rd row front and center, so close I could see the sweat beading on Ians forehead. Unbelievable show and still the best one Ive ever seen. Ahhh the good old days, and the sweet smell of cannabis filling the arena as every person in there lit one up, took a big long savory toke, then passed it on. Its a shame the 70s passed so quickly.

  • @Rescuedogrudy no it's not the good old days LOL

  • Thank you so much for your efforts. I am sitting here with tears in my eyes. APP is by far my favorite music in all the earth except for a little Borodin and Mussorgsky. I have loved this music from the first time I heard it so many years ago. I didn't get to see Tull till 77, when John Glascock was already sick. He was my favorite bassist so I was a little bummed but Tull has had it's share of great bassists. Don't even get me started on drummers!

I sat in awe for 2 1/2 hours.

  • Also saw Tull at the old Swing auditorium in San Bernardino. General admission. Tull rarely did those. got right up front. Then after went out back to see them leave and stiff some groupees, from there limo.

  • saw passion play concert 73/74 at the LA Forum. Saw Ian flipped his flute to a stage hand, the stage hand missed and I heard his flute clanging down the hall back stage. Ian gave the stage hand a dirty look, like (your fired).

  • the icecream lady wet her drawers to see you in the passion play.

  • Salty lyrics indeed from Mr A. I was the recipient of a real and rather tasty ice cream thrown to me from the said lady at Tulls Dublin (Ireland) gig in 1993. She diddnt follow up with her drawers though....

  • I saw the Passion Play tour at the Oakland Coliseum in 73, it was my favorite concert (along with Thick as a Brick), the year before and the same location .......... I've seen at least 40 Tull concerts over the years .........and 100+ other bands .........and Tull blows them all away with their talent and unique sound ......two of my daughters (20 and 22), love Tull and now go to concerts as well ...........

  • Historical!!!

  • I agree, puseye. Ian's voice, which used to be incredible, isn't what it used to be either. On the other hand his intrumentation is better than ever. The group members are pushing 60, so they've chosen more intimate settings over the raucous venues of the early days. Besides, their audience is older now.

  • I saw the tour on Tuesday, May 29,1973 at the Kitchener Aud. Kitchener Ontario, Canada. It was my first Tull show. I saw my 55 show last September 30/07 in Vancouver. The Jethro Tull of today is a sad site behold. Nevertheless, I feel so lucky to have attend so many fine Tull concerts. They were the best band I have ever heard.

  • even gets better as you go. Steve you did a very good job keep it up. You are getting to damn good at this shit. How about some Zappa work now!!!

  • I didn't do this one Bill. This is the original footage I used.

  • Saw this concert at Mi state blew me away. My favorite Tull project....never too old.

  • Passion Play is still my favorite tull album, although i didnt get to see them untill 1978 in Boston, Great work on this video

  • i bought thick as a brick when i was 13 (1985)

it changed my life , the one song one album , the album artwork (i used to have a copy of the full newspaper record) and ians songwriting and arranging, when i found out about "passion play" i felt spoiled . so i bought the record ..... it's impossible to describe in words how it affected me . to me it accomplished what thick was trying to achieve . thank you so much for making this video .

  • unfreakin believable....saw this in 2003 I have the original album...mint condition,,,Hey did the hare ever find his spectacles....?????hahahahahah

  • He Had A Spare Pair!

  • Actually about 5 years ago I think, I am getting old, could be more or less years, have seen each mostly annual tour since 72, a big ol hare came on stage with big ol spectacles on, but I think the joke was lost on 95 per cent of the audience.

  • I saw the 'A Passion Play' concert in the early 70's, at the Hampton (Va) Coliseum and I saw Ian and 'the boys' about a month ago (Dec, 2007) at the Ferguson Center, at Christopher Newport University, in SE Va.

    Great shows.

Jethro Tull, under Ian's guidance has been an influence for almost 40 years. Quite a body of work: A legacy to be proud of. (Well done Ian, Martin and the rest of the over the years' Tull ensembles.)

  • Never forget this show as a teen in Houston. This film shows the incredible musicianship-every tempo in every section is nailed live- a rarity back then when bands seemed to play thier live shows as fast a humanly possible

  • Which show? Went to the 7/15 (7/14 postponed to 8/1). Been trying to get confirmation - did Ian appear with the opening explosions playing the sax?

  • These vids are a treasure. I've had this music in one form or another since it was released. Music for the knowing souls.

  • I saw the show in the summer of '73 (just graduated from high school) at Cobo Hall in Detroit. It was great. I had already memorized every note, and my friends and I could recite "The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles" verbatim.

  • i saw the show at Cobo Hall in Detroit also. So so great.

  • I was born long after this played, and my introduction to progressive rock was only about a year ago. TullTapes, I REALLY appreciate your work!

  • A Passion Play... Magic Music..! Really Magic.. Thank You TullTapes!

  • Tulltapes, do you know of or have any video with a full live version of thick as a brick? I have been searching for that. I have a live full audio concert version on vinyl, but have never seen concert footage. thanks

  • I saw this show at Madison Square Garden in 1973/74. Never fogot it and never thought I would see it again. I could not believe when I found this. By far the greatest of the Tull groups, Ian, Marin, Barrie, John and Jeffrey Hammond. I loved watching Jeffrey perform. Also watching Ian play all those different instruments was amazing. To see this again blew me away. Thanks for putting this together.

  • the best album of ever

  • unfortunately in 73 I was still too young to see concerts started in mid 70's though and was already a big Tull fan by then must have seen them live 15 times since and never have I been disappointed even storm watch was a great live show thx for the vids.

  • Anderson released many masterpieces in his long lasting musical career, but I have no doubt: A Passion Play is the best expression of his creative genius...something coming out from a God-given inspiration

  • The only footage from Passion Play! Wow. For some it might seem as a disconnect, but thsi is historical evidence, or even the "toll road", to the seminal heavy metal Thick As A Brick and Aqualung. Ian and his band helped bring the world to one where we hear classical musicians charge large bucks to hear their renditions of Metallica.

  • geez, the audio sucks. but this is one of my most favorite bands...they were playing advanced jazz-rock...i just love watcing Ian bounce around..he is a true showman. Doggerel indeed!

  • We are lucky to have this at all! I saw this tour. Just phemominal! There are no copmmercial that I know of

  • woah, you've done a GREAT job! I am a tull fan of the younger generation, i'm fourteen, so naturally, i never saw any of this material live, and it doesn't exist on tape, wasn't it so? it's always fun seeing the young ian jumping around on stage and this, in spite of the terrible quality was no exception! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

  • soprano sax. so cool.

  • saw my first tull show in 71 at william and mary collage hall....i wondered who the hobo was walking out on the stage and sitting down on a stool....missed this show and am tickled shitless to see it....thanks...oh yea LMAO castingtherunes

  • When I wind up homeless, I'll have long hair and a beard, and I'll play a cheap flute hopping on my left leg and have everybody call me Jethro.

    I love the Tull!

  • Incredible!..wish I had seen this LIVE!!!

  • You knocked me on my tail. Now I've lost MY spectacles. I almost cried. The audio sucks. Do I care? NO! I've SEEN this in my head since I was 16, & I'm 46 NOW! I started going to Tull concerts in 1976, so I missed this one. APP & TAAB are so indelibly worn into my memory I can sing along no matter how long it has been (CD) & I know ALL the words. I still hear the spots where my VIYNL had a scratch. This project was worth all the effort you put into it, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • There is a small bit of 16mm film that was taken without sound which was used for the Third Hurrah promo. No complete pro Passion Play film exists.

  • Really great job. I saw that show. I noticed you used some of the pro shot material that ended up montaged into a video promo for "The Third Hurrah". That means there was pro shot FILM somewhere. Chrysalis most likely

  • This footage was taken in Oakland California, and is the only one recorded entirely of the Passion Play concert.

  • This is one of the coolest things i've ever seen!

Pitty there's no official material compiling this astonishing musical piece

  • What a fantastic show. It's great to see and hear Ian play the sax. Thanks Tulltapes, you've done an awesome work with this APP project.

  • This definitely brings back great memories. I saw them in '73 in Miami at the Jai-Alai Fronton....dressed the same. As a matter of fact, this looks like the place. Do you know where these footages were taken from?

Regardless of where, thanks for posting these vids.

Long live the "madman" of the flute!
