  • Whats the first jig called?

  • Very nicely done. My wife was nice enough to buy me my first mandolin at age 51.I hope to be playing good music like this in no time. Thank you for posting your video on You Tube. Very good job.

  • could you tab this out please?

  • I really want to learn to play. Especially Irish jigs.

  • I wanna get a zouk, but gonna start on mandolin since I can get one for $40 on ebay compared to $300 for a zouk.

  • Could ypu tab this out? flashlight_massacre@yahoo.com

  • so nice!

  • I would really like to pick up the irish bouzouki rather than mandolin, as it is an easier fit for my hands. Does anyone know where i can get one for under 200$? the cheapest one i've seen is 275$

  • Sounds good!

  • Slip Jigs actually, since they're in 9/8 time .. but nicely played!!

  • How difficult is it to press the strings of a mandolin, i tried guitar but pressing two strings down with one finger was difficult, are mandolin strings easier or harder?

  • What is the first song called?

  • @EmpathicAlchemist It sounds a bit like Tenpenny Bit to me.

  • are those 511 tactical pants? haha

  • a mandolin noob question......

    4 pairs of strings....

when fretting a pair of those strings, do u generally play them both or no?????

  • @kod01 Yes. That's the whole point of the strings being paired, you see.

  • It must be a pain in the ass to tune that one, must get it! THUMBS UP FOR ME! :-)

  • That is beautiful playing. I was wondering where your purchased your mandolin, I am interested in starting myself.

  • That is very beautiful playing, would you be able to tell me where you purchased your mandolin, I am interested in getting started myself.

  • awesome video sir. Was wondering if you had any advice for someone looking to learn more celtic standards on mandolin and guitar. I know how to play the insturnments, i just wanted to know of maybe some good songs or tab sites. i would greatly appreciate it.

  • put this on itunesSSS!!!!! XD

  • Nice.

  • What tuning are you in, sir?

  • what is the first tune you play?

  • When did you start playing mandoline?

  • please write a tab, pleaseeee :D

  • Comment removed

  • Nice axe!

  • what kind of scale or patten do you follow or u make it up as u go?

  • keep practicing

  • melody ??

  • Nice playin' I live in ireland:) I'm not as good as yhu take alook at my video... It's called sean mongey mandolin . Agai. Great playing

  • @papamongey Try to find any old recordings of the late Noel Strange (Longford think he won All-Ireland in the late 1950s ...he had great accuracy and command.

  • What model is your mandolin?

  • that is dope man

  • Great playing...

  • The first tune(Humours of Whiskey) is a "slip jig", 9/8 time, whereas the second tune, Owen Hackett's is a double jig, 6/8 time.

  • do you happen to know the name of the first tune? great playing btw sounds amazing

  • nice! love the tune you played.

  • I think they're both really nice tunes and you certainly do them justice. I think this will be my next attempt on the mandolin.

I love the Irish music although it is very "notebound" and requires more dexterity than other styles. I'm less than a year into the mandlin and can't put it down. Unfortunately, I live on Long Island, N.Y. where mandolin playing is such a small sub-culture that it is difficult to find like-minded players. Keep up the good work !!

  • @LOOKN450 Cheers, from a fellow mandolin picker on Long Island ;)

  • your a 20 min subway ride from Hells kitchen . there must be a few Irish left there hanging in a bar some place that you could play with .

  • is that a loar?

  • I have been playing guitar for twenty years and find the mandolin a pretty easy natural transition. just got to adapt to the tuning and put some time into it. anyway awesome video- 5 strs

  • I find the mandolin easier to play than the guitar.

  • Liar!!!

  • yes actually. it is quite hard to play the mandolin and learn it properly. the reason for this is that unlike many other string (plucked) instruments such as the guitar , dulcimer, and even banjo...the mandolin strings are so very tightly together, and the proper play of this instrument requires unusually good dexterity of the fingers & wrist movement. People who can play the guitar very well may not be able to play the mandolin at all because of this!!! its one of the hardest string instruments

  • sorry to tell you,but you're kinda exaggerating.. yes it indeed is weird at first, but it's not that big of a change. you just need to get used to it. I don't play mandolin for that long, sow could be that i'm wrong. But in my opinion, going from guitar to mandolin isn't that much of a change

(sorry for bad grammar, english isn't my real language =) )

  • I've played guitar for about 15 years. I'm good enough to impress your average person, but I'm not professional per se. However, I picked up a mandolin and was playing at the level of the video above in about 10 minutes. It's really about how well you know music and how quickly you can adapt to a new playing environment. It's not like I could rip off a bluegrass riff, but basic chording and lead techniques carry over heavily from other instruments.

  • is it hard to play the mandolin? and do you play one string at a time instead of struming th etwo that are close together?

  • @ChrisBclips I just started really playing the mandolin after 20 plus yrs of guitar. No it isn't that difficult and you should play what sounds good to you. Create a new style, be an innovator the world is full of ppl who do it "the right way" be you!

  • @ChrisBclips i find it difficult, but then it is my first stringed instrument. usually you play the strings as courses, meaning the two closest together are played as one.

  • thanks super helpful. thats what i was wondering.

  • very nice

  • whats the first song called its brill|!

  • does the oval or f hole actually affect the sound or is it just a technical thing that differs from player to player?

  • show how to play it plz

  • incredible

  • isnt the jig called "rights of man"?

  • sounds great.

  • whats this song called? and where can i find the tabs for it? gr8 job tho btw!

  • Man, where do you even go to get the music for a song like this? I plan on picking up mandolin, but I don't have any idea where to get mandolin specific material like this. suggestions?

  • check out aussie luke plumb - awesome celtic mando player. teaches at zoukfest if youre in the US

  • A music store dude. You will find loads of sheet music and guide books there. Or a used book store.

  • Good playing but a tip to everyone wanting to play get a A style if you want to play irish or classical he is playing a F style in the video which is used in bluegrass

  • the best celtic i've ever seen is luke plumb and he plays a Gilchrist which traditonally is used by bluegrass players but he gets the best celtic sound out of it i've ever heard

  • irish/ celtic music favors more of the oval hole or flat top mandolins. it doesn't matter so much a or f style.

  • what is this song called

  • nice jig

  • ncironjohn- I too am a guitarist who has fallen hard for the mandolin. As for the starter instrument question, you've probably bought something by now, but this might help others: I did a ton of research and talked to lots of retailers and players and here is my opinion:

Mandos under $500- get a Kentucky.

    $500-$1000- get an Eastman.

$1000-up- your call, lots of beautiful instruments!

At all levels A models (teardrop-shaped) are cheaper than F's (scroll like Bill Monroe's).

    Happy picking!

  • $70, a Rogue oval sound hole w/spruce top, change out the tuners

  • Yeah, a Rogue was my first mando, and I was quite happy with it at the time. The tone quality, though, is not even on the same PLANET as the $400 Kentucky K-505 I eventually replaced it with. (And I'm sure there are people out there who would say the same thing when comparing my Kentucky to their Eastmans!)

But for those who just want to try out a mando without getting into real money, I agree the Rogue is a great call. (You're right about the tuners too!)

  • thats kinda like the jig from dropkick murphys "im shippin off to boston " well at least in the beginning great job bro

  • Awesome playing!

  • Nice job!

  • way to keep pace and not get caught up in speed. Great sound. I'm a yank who has recently been bitten by the Mandolin bug. Swearing off electic guitar for good and going strictly accoutic from hear on out. My wife want's to buy me a mondo for my birthday. Anyone have suggestions on a cheap intro brand to get me started right? I saw the Ibenez for around 300.00 US. Should I bother, or buy a quality peice?

  • just got an epiphone a style. Fantastic quality for a starter!

  • I just recently got a Martin backpacker mandolin, its definitely not perfect, but i think it has a very nice tune for a pretty affordable price

  • i say go for the $500 range and get a low end michael kelly or morgan monroe or kentucky. its worth the extra cash.

  • Thanks for the tip.

  • I picked up an amazing A-style Eastman in Berkeley, CA for about $550 this summer, amazing.

  • I saw Eddie and his mates play @ Mike Kelly's Westsider the night before they played the Irish Fest and they were AWESOME!

  • all right the jig is up reach for the stars hands up shows over nothing to see here all right break it up lads quit while your ahead sherlock last call ninth inning hit the road jack hammer any questions who wants to know

  • for tabs you can also go to mandolincafe (dot) com. they have a lot on there. they also have chord charts and a lot of other stuff.

  • The first one is Dever the Dancer, maybe it's also called The humours of Whiskey...

  • Lovely playing!Thanks!btw..is that a Galway shirt i see???

  • Yes, bought it when I went there.

    Thanks!

  • Sounds great! I've just started playing mandolin, could you possibly tell me where to get tabs for jigs like that

  • Thanks indeed.
