Very nicely done. My wife was nice enough to buy me my first mandolin at age 51.I hope to be playing good music like this in no time. Thank you for posting your video on You Tube. Very good job.
I would really like to pick up the irish bouzouki rather than mandolin, as it is an easier fit for my hands. Does anyone know where i can get one for under 200$? the cheapest one i've seen is 275$
How difficult is it to press the strings of a mandolin, i tried guitar but pressing two strings down with one finger was difficult, are mandolin strings easier or harder?
awesome video sir. Was wondering if you had any advice for someone looking to learn more celtic standards on mandolin and guitar. I know how to play the insturnments, i just wanted to know of maybe some good songs or tab sites. i would greatly appreciate it.
@papamongey Try to find any old recordings of the late Noel Strange (Longford think he won All-Ireland in the late 1950s ...he had great accuracy and command.
I think they're both really nice tunes and you certainly do them justice. I think this will be my next attempt on the mandolin.
I love the Irish music although it is very "notebound" and requires more dexterity than other styles. I'm less than a year into the mandlin and can't put it down. Unfortunately, I live on Long Island, N.Y. where mandolin playing is such a small sub-culture that it is difficult to find like-minded players. Keep up the good work !!
I have been playing guitar for twenty years and find the mandolin a pretty easy natural transition. just got to adapt to the tuning and put some time into it. anyway awesome video- 5 strs
yes actually. it is quite hard to play the mandolin and learn it properly. the reason for this is that unlike many other string (plucked) instruments such as the guitar , dulcimer, and even banjo...the mandolin strings are so very tightly together, and the proper play of this instrument requires unusually good dexterity of the fingers & wrist movement. People who can play the guitar very well may not be able to play the mandolin at all because of this!!! its one of the hardest string instruments
sorry to tell you,but you're kinda exaggerating.. yes it indeed is weird at first, but it's not that big of a change. you just need to get used to it. I don't play mandolin for that long, sow could be that i'm wrong. But in my opinion, going from guitar to mandolin isn't that much of a change
(sorry for bad grammar, english isn't my real language =) )
I've played guitar for about 15 years. I'm good enough to impress your average person, but I'm not professional per se. However, I picked up a mandolin and was playing at the level of the video above in about 10 minutes. It's really about how well you know music and how quickly you can adapt to a new playing environment. It's not like I could rip off a bluegrass riff, but basic chording and lead techniques carry over heavily from other instruments.
@ChrisBclips I just started really playing the mandolin after 20 plus yrs of guitar. No it isn't that difficult and you should play what sounds good to you. Create a new style, be an innovator the world is full of ppl who do it "the right way" be you!
@ChrisBclips i find it difficult, but then it is my first stringed instrument. usually you play the strings as courses, meaning the two closest together are played as one.
Man, where do you even go to get the music for a song like this? I plan on picking up mandolin, but I don't have any idea where to get mandolin specific material like this. suggestions?
Good playing but a tip to everyone wanting to play get a A style if you want to play irish or classical he is playing a F style in the video which is used in bluegrass
the best celtic i've ever seen is luke plumb and he plays a Gilchrist which traditonally is used by bluegrass players but he gets the best celtic sound out of it i've ever heard
ncironjohn- I too am a guitarist who has fallen hard for the mandolin. As for the starter instrument question, you've probably bought something by now, but this might help others: I did a ton of research and talked to lots of retailers and players and here is my opinion:
Mandos under $500- get a Kentucky.
$500-$1000- get an Eastman.
$1000-up- your call, lots of beautiful instruments!
At all levels A models (teardrop-shaped) are cheaper than F's (scroll like Bill Monroe's).
Yeah, a Rogue was my first mando, and I was quite happy with it at the time. The tone quality, though, is not even on the same PLANET as the $400 Kentucky K-505 I eventually replaced it with. (And I'm sure there are people out there who would say the same thing when comparing my Kentucky to their Eastmans!)
But for those who just want to try out a mando without getting into real money, I agree the Rogue is a great call. (You're right about the tuners too!)
way to keep pace and not get caught up in speed. Great sound. I'm a yank who has recently been bitten by the Mandolin bug. Swearing off electic guitar for good and going strictly accoutic from hear on out. My wife want's to buy me a mondo for my birthday. Anyone have suggestions on a cheap intro brand to get me started right? I saw the Ibenez for around 300.00 US. Should I bother, or buy a quality peice?
