I cried when he played this song on piano in Hanford, last weekend.... Then cried again during "These Days" ..... that music.... shit just gets to me.
"I'm just one or two years and a couple of changes behind you in my lessons at loves pain and heartache school, where if you feel too free and you need something to remind you, there's this loneliness springing up from your life like a fountain from a pool."
Those words have saddened and inspired me at the same time on so many occasions. He has the ability to sing to "you" as if you're the only person in the audience. It's almost as if he sees into your soul and turns your emotions into words.
Have quoted from this song many times " ... when you look through loves illusions, there lies the danger ..." wow ... and given away the "Late for the Sky" CD to so many friends and strangers over the years ... to share the wisdom, insight and lyrical brilliance of this man with them ...
The best present one could buy musically for themselves is the Jackson Browne cd Late for the Sky. @Marjoriecaroldkp Amen. My 15 old daughter is into "real" music. I taught her to play guitar and turned her on to The Beatles, Jackson Browne and Pink Floyd etc etc. Ho can you go wrong listening to JB ? Keep on rocking!
Jackson is one of the most prolific song writers of all time. It's to bad he hasn't received the credit due him. I truly love him like no other musician, singer, or song writer. Jackson has to be studied. You can't just listen to Jackson. The lyrics will draw you in and you will get the lyrics sheet and follow along as he sings to feel exactly what he is meaning and you will be astonished at his magnitude and depth of character. David Pollard Sioux falls SD 2000gjk@live.com
@Marjoriecaroldkp Keep on Rocking. To those of us who grew up in the 70's, we remember this guy and he knows it. Keep on listening to JB. He's a musical genius BTW he's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think he's good with what he got out of life. He's my hero.
One of the best lyricist and musicians ever. It took the Eagles to do his song "Take it Easy" before he got any real recognition. Just goes to show you there is so much talent out there and I'm not talking about shows like American Idol. Not bashing Idol but most of them are just like karaoke singers who play to a good back up band with a few exceptions. Jackson is a good humatarian as well and like Grahm Nash devotes his time, money and talent to worthy causes. God Bless you Jackson..
Only a fool who doesn't listen to lyrics, only likes crashing, violent noise disguised as music, and lacks the capacity for pensive reflection and philosophy would describe Jackson Browne as "mellow"
This is an absolutely beautiful and poignant song! Jackson Browne can pack more meaning into a song, than some songwriter's do in every song they ever composed in their whole careers! Thats mu humble opinion, anyway! I got to see Jackson perform live in 1980! Those were great times in my life back then! Peace, BobbyK
He is for sure an artist, his songs tell a story, does not repeat and he is a good father also. Not leaving out he looks good too. Have every album from the old days and new cd's..Love him and his talent....
I'm 22 and I have been in love with Jackson Browne's music since my dad first started playing it for me when I was a kid. His lyrics are nothing short of amazing, they are honest, deep, and relatable.
Unfortunately it's not the type of music you listen to once and get stuck in your head. Music like that is what's on the radio now, songs with a fast beat and simple catchy lyrics... but those songs get old fast, while meaningful music like Browne's can be listened to again and again for years.
music is funny. it's supposed to evolve into different genres and different takes. people that still love beethoven and believe we all should only listen to him are actually wrong. we should build off of what people have done as well as respect it, but move forward to a new type of music (this is what beethoven did off of mozart, mozart did off of bach) the problem it seems is we have no respect for the past. thats why our music is so bland. the question is what happens for the next generation?
god this song brings me back. jb is the greatest modern lyricist. people like to laud dylan all the time, but I never caught on to his scene. jackson is much more relate able to everyman (or woman). which would explain his writing 'for everyman'. he just speaks to anyone and everyone. what a tortured soul. what a creative, artistic soul.
I like how everyone of Jackson Brownies songs have several layers of meaning, which you constantly discover throuought your life, and thats why Im exited to find such meaning from these songs at 16! Have quite abit of meaning to get from these timeless tracks...
Yeah, I agree with all of you, teens and less teens. I'm 32 and discovered Jackson's music at the age of 25. Listen to this song people, the musicality of the lyrics, the changes of rythm, suddenly the piano solo, and then the guitar starting again with his voice....you had to struggle...you had to fight...keep understanding...and compassion inside...and do not forget Lindley :)
I discovered Jackson Browne a year ago by one of my friends and his music is amazing I wish they made music like this in the modern days..I'm only 15 and I hate all this new crap its a shame really
Same. I'm 15 and I love him. I love THIS type of music; especially his lyrics. I'm glad he's still touring. I have no respect for the new shit. You don't hear this anymore. I wish it was still as popular as it once was.
Good for you. You know back in the 60' 70' and even the early 80's it wasn't about the image, there wasn't MTV and the Music Videos. It didn't matter what the artist looked like...it was more the music and the meaning behind the song...Hope it comes back
Same here. I'm 24 and have discovered Jackson's music within the last year. Saw him live in the fall and he was amazing. It's a real shame they make stuff like this today.
I am a cild of the 70's and find today's music very discouragining. I remeber sitting next to my fireplace, after my parents died when I was sixteen and being comforted by the music of Jackson Browne.
Checkout Wilco, if you havent done so already. Great soulful Rock.
But yeah, I have no idea whats going on with singer/songwriters these days. People tell me to checkout Andrew Bird/Sufjan Stevens/etc but I dont like any of those guys.
@xjorieke I'm completely with you. I know my profile doesn't match this but Jackson Browne has been a huge part of my life since I was born. I love his music and while I may only be 16 his lyrics have helped me through some really difficult times. My dream is to go to one of his concerts. And this is just one more of the many great songs by him. One of my favorites would probably have to be These Days but this song is amazing
@Jankenpyon89 That's what I mean...his music is beyond brilliant. To me, For a dancer is one of the best songs ever made. Jackson Browne is such an underrated artist. Many people of my age never heard his name before. I've been to one of his concerts a while back. It was such a great experience, even though the majority of the audience was 40+, haha. And now that I'm 17 I realize even more how amazing his songs are, haha.
@xjorieke I recently just went to one of his concerts! :) I was sooo happy and the concert was amazing and it was one of the happiest days of my life. I went with my mom and we both started to get teary eyed when he came on stage. It was an experience I will never forget. And yeah I'm 17 now and the majority of the audience was 40+ I even ran into some of my other friends parents lol. But it was an amazing night :)
@Jankenpyon89 Haha and now I'm 18, and still listening to his music. When you get older the lyrics mean a lot more to you than before (also because I'm Dutch, which doesn't make it easier to understand everything). I guess we, being 17 and 18, can inspire people of our age to listen to real music as well. There's a great lesson is many of those songs, and that goes for Jackson Browne, but also for artists such as Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding etc. :)
Music is an art form and this is a paragon of it's genre!... in fact it's more, it's a reflection of how life's dreams can crumble as the tide turns and what's been built crumbles before one's eyes!!!

I was told...and this might not be true..that the entire album was inspired by the suicide of his girlfriend...it is a very haunting and moving album. Like no other.
His wife died in 1976, leaving him with a 2 year old son (actor Ethan Browne) to raise. Yeah, but also remember what Jackson says in the same song, "Let your prayers go drifting into space, you never know what will be coming down." That brings some hope to death as well.
The lyrics just go right into your heart. Piercing. Amazing.
