  • Both this LP and Wind and Wuthering are excellent LP's

  • Doesn't anyone find thjs song more than a bit scary, being as how it is an ironically savage indictment of some of the excesses of the more unpleasant psychiatric treatments of the 20th century? Or am I reading too much into what I do think is a great song and easily their best post PG.

    Your call

  • GREAT SONG!

  • sheer beauty

  • I saw that Show in Montreal on March 2nd 1977...Fantastic.

  • Many times I thought that this is the song I´d like to listen when I am dying...

  • I'm 16 now and I heard a live recording of this song while I was lying in bed, listening to the song, and I feel asleep

I had the best sleep of my live with this song and White Mountain. The Trick of the Tail Tour must have been greattastic

Try to find Music like this nowadays :((((((((((

  • @illegalalien2 try to find music like this anytime.Phil is brillant and the album is totally fantastic.

  • @illegalalien2 ILLEGALALIEN CONGRATULATIONS..WHITE MOUNTAIN IS A SO FULL OF BEAUTY ..AND ENTANGLED IS FOR THE LAST BREATHE OF PEOPLE WHO LOVES BEAUTY !

  • Probably my favourite Genesis track of all time. Beautifully written and arranged with just the right amount of instrumentation. It must have been tempting to throw everything in. A giant of a track on one of their best albums. Hard to believe that it was released 35 years ago.

  • I'm thinking this was what Steve had in mind when he posted his want ad .... "Ethereal"

  • Beautiful! Can I get this anywhere on DVD?

  • @MrRoller77 no you cannot get this on disk, al gore says it leaves a big carbon footprint and we all must obey.

  • @MrRoller77 Yes, you can. If you buy the 2007 re-release of "A trick of the tail", this is included on the bonus DVD.

  • The last couple of minutes of this song are breathtaking. The combo of Tony's synth melody, the massive Tron choirs and the bass pedals are AWESOME.

  • Waaoo is Big brother.

  • Careful what you say LITTLE BROTHER.

  • I LOve Genisis never new they were part of big brother.

  • such a beautiful song....

  • I still LOVE it!!

    Greetings from Berlin

  • mezmorizing. always loved this~

  • My favorite Genesis song-saw them on this tour and still cannot figure out the chords Mike is playing?

  • One of their most beautiful - especially since they sort of channeled Crosby Stills and Nash :)

  • written by Hackett and Banks. I'd like them to work together again...

  • @ladislas59 i have 3 Steve Hackett LP's and they are all artsey and great listening.i especially like Cell 151.it has a driving rock quality.

  • phill is such a talented musician overall man! please remind me of a guy, who not only plays drums on proto prog albums (flaming youth) symphonic prog albums (old genesis) pop albums (genesis 80's and solo career) fusion albums (brand x) multiple musicians (the list is just to long) and still sings like this!

  • Is there anyone who knows where i can find this live on dvd????

    ¨Pleeeeaaassseeeeee!!! I need it!!!

  • @IactonKruze you can find it as a bonus in the remastered Trick of The Tail, the version with the CD plus DTS 5.1 mixed DVD

  • @KeysBR thank you so much!!!

  • @stigb56: 15, but it's not easy to understand that kind of stuff. It sounds odd, even in A Trick album!

I've played it hundreds of times, still sounds fresh and so good.

I've tried to play it on my FT165 Epiphone 12 String ( the one Banks plays on this video!!!).

Listening to that kind of stuff today, for young people, must be a nightmare!!!

I did attend a Genesis concert in 1978 in Poitiers, France. I couldn't explain why it was so special!

  • 15 persons don't understand music!!!

  • @stigb56

    Sono perfettamente d'accordo.

    I completely agree with you...!!

  • Looks like 15 retards rated this vid........

  • The last thing I would do is take anything away from Tony Banks as to the sound and texture of Genesis, but I hope people know this is a Steve Hackett song...a piece of puzzle long missed in Genesis since his departure after Wind and Wuthering....

  • magical !!

  • yeah seems they were so creative here, haunting melody.not sure if you can compare gabriel and coliins live.each has strengths.it does hold tho that fresh after gabriel left the writing was deeper, less froth and pomp, truly a 70's classic.banks keys are great 4 out of body travel, brill.

  • the melody at the end proves PG wasn't the main driving force behind creation, but just another piece in the set....

  • @felipegalindobr the driving force was clearly Mr. Tony Banks.

  • MY FIRST GENESIS LOVE...

  • Is this the only live performance of this song?

  • @kamwrites You can get it on "Live Over Europe" - 2007

  • from "entangled" to "fading lights," tony banks just can't help but be a total badass genius on any kind of keyboard.

  • @sadmachine I'd give this comment a million thumbs up if I could. ;)

  • Gregory Ginther, this will forever remind me of you. I love you always. Your biggest fan from western PA

  • so much better than all that invisible touch stuff...

  • I know it's without PG, but this is one of Genesis's best songs. I love the album Trick of the tail

  • Beautiful is perhaps the only word to describe this song

I'm 18 and this is and probably will be my favourite song forever!

  • I used to try to cop the chords from these songs but it was bit harder than the typical rock song. However, the tempos were slow enough that I could eventually get it after which I thought I was the stuff ! I would even learn the keyboard parts on guitar because I thought the chords and progressions were so cool - very open voicings and full of room

  • im so inlove with this song, ever since i was in my moms belly i've heard this song over and over again. can never get tired of it. Genesis is the most underrated band ever! thanks to my dad who taught me to love special music like this.

  • All are right. The magnificant musicians were a recipe for some of their finest work. I have to say though, that as beautiful as the twelve string is, it is the guitar plaing of Steve Hackett that makes this song. His notes are haunting yet comforting through out this album. He was not whowas comfortable standing in the front. He just began standing up just around this time. when he left after Wind & Wuthering you notice the difference.

  • I love how this song is so absolutely beautiful and you'd assume it has an equally amazing theme for the lyrics to follow, but you find that the lyrics are about a guy about to get an operation at a hospital. Strange..yet that is truly how Genesis worked..well, until they turned pop, at least.

  • I remember this tour from'76, the bass pedal from Rutherford pounding into my chest. First time I ever noticed on this song, no percussion of any kind. Bruford takes a 6 plus minute break.

  • Comment removed

  • @mikelmart Somebody is playing the xylophone...and the castanets.

  • @garbeaj And, in my opinion, they shouldn't be. This song is beautiful enough on its own.

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday I like the percussion. But you are correct...the song is so majestic that it really stands on its own with 12-string guitar and vocal only. Everything else is window dressing. But it is great window dressing!

  • You people who care what others like or dislike are acting like fascist. Grow up and realise why this country is so great and stop being so damn self centered.

  • The only dislikes from this video has to come from Collins' grungy tank top.

  • I agree. And yes this song is fantastic, Still,

  • Magical music!

  • best prog rock?..........genesis or pink floyd........rick wakeman and yes are defo third....but who`s first?......you decide...

  • @TheRonno Genesis definately. But they're different in their own ways. but genesis has always been my favourite. y

  • Yes Foxtronlnk but stickleback have captured twenty somethings by doing soundtracks-little shitz no?

  • Yes but stickleback have captured twenty somethings by doing soundtracks-little shitz no?

  • This song will haunt you!

  • "14 don't like"? - I really think this should be forbidden

  • @vasco1990 are you serious I grew up wiyh this song and it has helped me deal with and understand weirdos like you

  • @44hornet why weirdo? I said it should be forbidden not to like this song...II love this song man, it s amazingly beautiful

  • @vasco1990 the 14 people who disliked this video are all Kim Jong-Il. You don't have anything to worry about.

  • A Brilliant track mesmerising one of many from the masters of musicianship and song writing

  • Truly outstanding. One of their best, and post-Gabriel, to boot.

  • This music makes my hair stand on end. It gives me chills - it's simply so beautiful

  • hypnotisant.... mesmerising... written by Hackett and Banks. La guitare de Hackett plâne tout le long de l'album ! magique !

  • Phil's got an amazing falsetto. His voice was so unique.

  • The beach scene choreography with the beautiful dancer is a perfect compliment to this incredibly exquisite piece of music. Pure majesty.

  • AL FINAL DEL TEMA LOS COROS DEL MELLOTRON JUNTO AL SINTE SACRO ME VUELAN LA CABEZA... TERRIBLEEEEEEEEE!!! :)

  • Genesis creaba (crea) climas inagotables. Este tema es un ejemplo de ello.

  • ahi te va ese

  • Surraelista... poético... mágico... siemplemente, inagotable!!!

  • When Steve was in the band ...

  • this is quite an amazing song written by tony and steve - one of their finest

  • This is pure GENIUS!

  • This song takes me away to a special place where i feel free from the aches and pains of life.

  • Very feminine. I prefer the grittier Genesis of the Knife ,the Hogweed etc.

  • I have over 1,000 CD's and listen to music non-stop. This - to me - is the best song ever written. Just so beautiful and emotional. I wish I could have the talent to write this kind of music.

  • One of their best songs. The outro sends shivers through me. Genesis, for me were the best progressive rock band of all time. Just then right balance of drama, melody, melancholy and all underpinned by brilliant musicianship.

  • @WarrenCromartie2 here here!!!!!!!!!

  • classic track

  • Me trae tantos lindos recuerdos...sigo "Enredado".

  • That outro never fails to send tingles down my spine

  • I love this song. Lie in the dark, with incense stick burning. Ethereal! Especially with the choir effect at the end. Makes me think of flying through space.

  • My God, what a fascinating song!

  • The musical box, genesis cover band does this song. I saw it in Toronto about 5 months ago. I was blown away. They do it perfect! If you are a Genesis fan, it is a must see (the tour was based on trick of the tail, but they also played all of the hits like cinema show and suppers ready. They are by far the best Genesis cover band today.

  • Agree with all who love what is, in my humble opinion, one of, if not the, most beautiful hauntng piece of music ever wrtten. Makes a great alcoholic lullaby. Nothing like it has ever come close or ever will. Nailed by this tune in 1976 and still love it. Harmony, enchanting melody and rythem. Entangled and cherished forever. Nothing comes close!

  • this track... this album... this band... remind me so much of youth! it stirs alot of emotion..im sure this from a film released around `seconds out` period? i remember going to a late nite screening at the `the odeon` in the jurasic period in Newport S Wales! timeless.. Steve Hackett was so cool in my eyes! the reason i took up playing guitar! thanks for posting. love Steve O from THE PORT

  • @23dino23

i would say if anyone have ever defined genesis it is tony banks

  • The footage at the end was added by film-makers; This was part of the old GENESIS: IN CONCERT which toured as a 16mm back in the day.

  • @studentjohn36 the band used the film as part of the concert performance.

  • Remember my dad playing this LP on a Friday night before a night out with my mum, I must have been about nine, I'm forty one next week and this song still sends shivers down my spine! Follow You Follow Me, and Carpet Crawlers has the same effect. Total class.thanks.

  • Just watch a vid in which a certain Noel Gallagher called singers like Phil Collins 'dicks in socks'. I don't wanna offend anyone, but I can see where he's coming from.

  • @BockstaelTwayDuzant I guess I don't understand that remark.

  • @BockstaelTwayDuzant the guy that said that collins was dicks in socks i aint having that genesis were talented band mr the gallagher brothers unfortunately think ther re the beatles shame really cos i like the beatles and oasis but your just a twat

  • @BockstaelTwayDuzant Well I know we all care what Noel G and you think

  • fuck dammit... the first time I listen to Genesis. Just amazing

  • This is the Song that got me hooked. Just sitting there listening to a recommended album. Guess what? This started my progressive rock collection!

  • This version or very similar from 1976 is on the Genesis 2nd Boxed Set and guess what - some idiot mixed out the bass pedals at the end! Duh!

  • such great memories of this and of my youth.

  • This took me back to a place where time was irellivent and life was 1 long love affair full of new experiences. First loves and intimate dark rooms where life exposed it's secret places and life seemed endless and free. This song brought tear's to my eye's reminding me of what was meant to be and a subtle feeling of something lost ferever.

  • @Richie979 I hear you. Music like this is SO needed in life. Takes away the pain.

  • Awesome song. I wish they would just leave the live footage alone and not add those stupid clips such as women prancing on the dunes.

  • @rachel713tree Wow. I actually thought the woman dancing in the sand was a perfect compliment to this incredible song.

  • Thamks so much for posting this!

  • genius music and tekst

  • Brilliant! The ending gives me chills....Genesis, the best prog band ever!

  • fantastica cancion!!!!!

  • I always play this song for go to sleep....and bring me to nice dream...sleep well...

  • It's so touching to see Tony Banks play the guitar. The footage for the instrumental part in the end is a bit cheesy, though. How many more women dancing on beaches with their bras in their hands do we need?

  • first time i heard this song i had taken an acid tab. i was with this girl who i had just met. we both ended holding on to each other and falling madley in love with each other whilst crying our eyes out. unbeliveable experience.

  • @24547377, did things work out after the acid wore off? :-)

  • brings back great memories of the 70's when "Trick of the Tail" was the first album I ever bought , and it is as good now as then.

  • 4:32 , in my opinion, is probably Tony Banks' best work with Genesis. Its haunting and beautiful at the sametime.

  • I wish they had cranked up the guitar more at the end. This song is so pure and good. It's completely underrated.

  • Instead of cloning sheeps, why don't they clone these guys?

  • @TheLeton995 Only if the Phil Collins clone has any genetic urges to actually write songs, or front a band, removed. On the whole, though, grand idea!

  • @skaisaliveandwell Haha, brilliant... the bulk of the compositions it's Banks' business... BTW not clones, but close to the real thing are The Musical Box. I've seen them twice, and it was an unbelievable experience...

  • Years ago I sat haunted by the intrumental at the end of this song. I taped it on an old basf tape and still play it. I could never remember the song or the album it came from. Then today suddenly I bump into it on 7digital.com. Been playing it on my MP3 player tears running down my face......so many memories come tied up in this.

  • Absolutely delightful track from an all round excellent album - Genesis at their best!

  • As a huge Peter Gabriel era fan, I will say that is as good as anything from that era. That outro is so haunting...really paints a beautiful picture. And Hackett shines as always. Why isn't music this earthly anymore?

  • This beautiful song had just remind me of an experience I had last year when I was strolling on the streets of Frankfurt and, in a matter of minutes, I was being taken to a local hospital after a sudden and sheer kidney stone crisis. I was just a tourist who didn't speak german. And the rest was as surreal as this inspired lyrics, including the end.

  • absolutely love this... but a question niggles at me.. who is playing the bass pedals? Mike can't be cos he isn't even looking.. unless Bill was multitasking?

  • which year was this concert in , the guy playing on the left, is it Steve Hackett? I just cant see his face, nor his typical moustache. I prefer the studio version; but Tony Banks rules!

  • @Xanaseb Steve Hackett Rules. He became the original sound of GENESIS>

  • @FoxtronInk I love Hackett but the heart of Genesis is Banks.

  • @wingodom I guess you are right But, I still think that when Steve left the band, a big chunk of Genesis sound departed too.

  • @Xanaseb: It's from the" The trick of The Trail tour" 1976 :P Hackett left the band October 1977 :P Also, the drummer for this tour was Bill Bruford from Yes and King Crimson :P

  • So miss Genesis concerts. They are so wonderful.

  • Agreed. It's fun to play on the old Taylor 12 string...F#min etc

  • Saw them at the Beacon Theater in NYC on this tour. Loved it! Having Bruford in the mix was a super added bonus. These were the days.

  • Saw

  • a trick of the tail is a great lp, it has great heavy songs like dance on a volcano and los endos than show they still had all the edge theyd had for the last 6 years and amazing soft songs like ripples and entangled which could only really work with phil, the gabriel era was the peak time but the 2 years with this line up were truly amazing, its a pity steve left but his solo career has left us with a big spark of genesis which he still gives us too this day

  • the lamb lies is a total great collection.i also really like ripples.this group would not have been the same w/o phil's soaring.vocals.i have steve hacketts post gensis LP"s,he stands alone nicely.

  • I agree with the Hackett factor as stated by Jeff99az. He carried Phil through this album. Phil was always a great musician, but without Hackett or Gabriel, the group just never reached the high hurdle it set through the early and mid 70s.

  • Ok,in the past I've slated Phil ,but this song is majestic . I'm a Gabriel era genesis fan but this is classic genesis

  • @lufc58 -- due to Hackett influence. AFter he left, the classic sound started to fade away til it was gone completely by early 80's.

  • Duke Still is fabulous!!! Great music never dies. Now we have Nickleback, but thank god for some bands like Porcupine Tree.

  • Nickelback is pure garbage, please dump it!

  • I agree that they were over as a progressive rock band with And Then. But I liked it and Duke, and even Abacab. I consider Abacab a very solid rock album. But after that, well...

  • @Lewsir46 i agree duke was fabulous - there masterpiece i believe.great pop songs, great progressive pieces. abacab is also terrific - wouldn't call any prog on that album but pop-rock with substance.if that album came out today people's heads would explode

  • Alot better than I Can't Dance!!! What the hell were they thinking!!!! Invisible Touch!!!

    Garbage!!!

  • @bassmanjoe the mama album (genesis album)was the last hurrah for them-after that forget about it

  • Entangled was used as background music on a TV program about erosion on the Yorkshire coastline. For thirty years I have been thinking "Shouldn't they have used "Ripples" instead?" Still, it's another example of the wonderful music that came out in that era.

  • Memories...

    I was a young guy, 17 or18...

    a long time ago....

  • I can't listen to this song without hearing the opening chords of Squonk at the end. They just segue together so well.

  • Every Genesis song evokes very vivid memories of the circumstances I first listened to it. This one will forever remind me of a very cold winter, lots oif ice and snow and a 'wonderful' Tesla reel-tor-reel that I had to continuously adjust with a screwdriver to get proper sound.

  • extrait de leur meilleur album

  • I just got to this song recently, when I bought Trick of the Tail. I think this is so pretty, but than I heard 'You catch your breath and the nurse will present you the bill' and it made me laugh só hard, cause that's pretty much what happens in a lot of countries... 5 stars

  • The Gods of Progressive music.

  • ..brings back good memories...

  • Legends

  • This song is so majestic...it can really take you places. Then again what else can I expect from the greatest band ever?

  • yes, and then there were three - it went into a joke

  • Kinda agree. I like And Then There Were Three but the whole time listening to that album it sounded like they were confused and not prepared. They could have improved on it greatly. I like everything they did until after Duke was released. Duke had a couple of bland pop songs but the first half of that album and Duke's Travels/End are epic. After that they completely went down the shitter.

  • A shame the cameraman seems not to care much about Hackett, despite the fact that he wrote this song with Banks...

  • "Trick of The Taił: is genious disc isnt"it???

  • ...a genius disk indeed :)
