  • I am nearly 46 years old so I remember all of these 1970's programs like they were ten minutes ago. I loved my childhood and I know it's not possible but if it was I would go back and do it all again.

  • Old Skool: Rentaghost. End credits music. Series 1 ep 2. 1976

  • RiP Michael Staniforth

  • Pipkins!

  • Over 30 years and I remember Mr Claypole like it was yesterday... and I love the theme song!! :D

  • i bet the actors had a ball making this. This was hilarious and totally mad especially when they bought Dobbin in. i remember at the time they said they'd gone over the top but for me the more crazy it got the better:)

  • Absolutely love this end theme. I was 11 years old in 1976, Rentaghost was great.

  • That laugh at the end always scared me :(

  • @drdawn86 ...pmsl!!!!..good comment!!

  • Michael Staniforth who played Timothy Claypole died from an aids related illness on the 31st of July 1987. He also wrote and sang the Rentaghost theme music. He was the longest serving member of the cast from 1976 when the show first aired until 1984. I am 44 so i remember Rentaghost well and i thought it was a good show.

  • @Davewise1965

He was also in the first cast of Starlight Express, and when it started, Blue Peter did a piece on it, and interviewed Staniforth zooming round the studio on roller skates. I remember watching it as a kid thinking WTF? Fun telly memories!

  • @drdawn86 no, his doppelganger.

  • this program freeked me out as a kid,

  • you wern't taught by mr beale was you !

  • no mr grey.

  • @goodtimes0000 Oh dear, bet you feel an idiot!!!

  • @jaseywasey50 i feel crushed!

  • Anthony Jackson (think he played FRED MUMFORD, and a small partin BLESS this HOUSE ) Anthony according to WIKI, died, in 2006- saw him in 2002, buying some OLIVES from delicatessen in PIMLICO, also saw him come out of the JOB CENTRE in CHADWICK ST, - SW1, as i was going in to the buliding circa 1999/2000...

  • Fabulous! Have been wanting tae revisit this show fir ages, used tae rush home fae school so ah could see this... God, ah feel very nostalgic lately, classic! Also, as a point of interest, the 'Claypole' reverb laugh at the end of the credits is sampled on the end of 'Inner Meet Me' by The Beta Band (available on The Three EP's cd) (8(<)

  • 1975... says it at the end.....

  • Well spotted Superbadbrad, it was recorded in 1975 but was first aired on 6th January 1976.

  • I loved and adored this show sooooooooooo much as a kid just sat yesterday and watched whole of series one we just howled and yes bless michael stainforth that cute little giggle :0 so clever so young to die rip timmoth

  • classic tv at its best ,.it will never be surpassed in this modern day of political correctness.shame the entire series isn'.t available on dvd.Great memories and takes you back so many years .The theme tune is always buzzing around in my head ,great intro from michael staniforth aka Mr claypole who wrote the theme tune and god bless his sole

  • I do realise I risk showing my age, but i have to say thay they don't make 'em like this anymore!!!

  • 0:46

    LOL

  • Wish there were some full length epsiodes to watch on here of Rentaghost

  • me too

  • Mr Claypole!

  • Michael Staninforth was amazing.

I wrote to Jim'll Fix It wanting to be a ghost with him. (Michael not Jin!) Git never responded!

Thanks for the clip - any more?

I loved it, loved it, loved it as a child. Kinda scared it would look rubbish to me now though...

  • Hahaha! Yeah, that Jimmy Saville was a git. He should have been done under 'Trades Descriptions'. Jim'll Fix It my arse.

Still waiting for my singalong/love-in with Agnetha from Abba, Jimmy. Still waiting...

  • As a distant memory, it was the best! Michael Staninforth did a good song, and I will leave it at that! thanx for the blog

  • Brilliant classic kids TV only bettered by pipkins......well that's my opinion anyway!

  • Kids these days will have no fond memories of tv programmes. They get manufactured crap like Hollyoaks.

  • At a party be a smarty and hire...Rentaghost!

I see they changed the lyrics from the original then? Don't let BBC 70's kids know about Ouija Boards!

Keep away from the boards kids! they are not the ghosts of the dead, they are forces beyond human understanding who pretend to be your relatives...HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AHA AH AHA AHA AHAAHA AHAHA!!!!

    P.S. Thanks for this!

  • Heavy footsteps in your attic means a spectre telepathic is descending just to spirit you away. Yay!

I hear the last time Audrey Roberts sneezed in Corrie she ended up in Albert Square.

  • I used to whatch it every week and I still dont know what it was about.

  • Basically it was about a company that leased out ghosts to people who needed them.

  • some woman in the shop i goto said i look like the guy out of rentaghost 2 day so i had to look. i think she means the beardy jester guy, im quite insulted lol

  • I was 5 when it started and was immediately hooked and yes, the first series was the best. Kinda gave up on it when the horse turned up coz it had just got stupid by then.

  • loved this when I was a kid, "DON'T GO INTO THE CELLAR"

  • Loved the show but was very young and the laugh at the end scared the shit out of me every time.

  • i want this on dvd...was my fave tv programme as a kid

  • Loved It!!! Especially the theme tune.

  • Is there a rumour that it's coming back to TV in a brand new show?

  • I loved this programme but yes I agree the 1st series was the best, got a bit bored with the daftness after that

  • Fab program great theme tune

  • R.I.P Anthony Jackson i loved your charactor in Bless this House.

  • I remember he turned up in EastEnders once in the early days of that show.

  • is micheal stanniford dead as well ? didnt he get aids.

  • Yes, he did, he was homosexual, he died in 1987.

  • We tuned in expecting a scary kids supernatural series like 'the clifton house mystery' instead there was a pantomime horse and audrey out of coronation street...on a sad note most of the cast have now died..

  • mr meaker was played by the actor edward brayshaw.this programme was a perfect example

of what is referred to as pantomime acting.

(this means the acting was awful.)this show has some of the worst acting ever seen in a kid's tv show!

  • cool heheh

  • staring freddy mercury as the jester!

  • I was a kid when this was on again great program they dont make them like this any more.

  • As a 6 yr old I thought this was awful;I was right!

  • I just searched for Michael Staniforth (Mr Claypole) on Wikipedia- to see what happened to him.

He died of an AIDS related illness in 1987.

Poor guy....he was a legend of my childhood.

  • Bloody hell the last time i heard this tune ABBA was number 1

  • RIP Michael Staniforth - A true legend...

  • My childhood ROCKED! I'd do it all again from tomorrow!

  • @tireoghainian So would I ! Happy days !

  • oh my god thats all i kept saying there is nothing like memories

  • The pantomime horse used to scare me

  • Sad all three actors from series 1 have passed on.also Molly Weir(Hasel McWitch)and the ghosts boss Mr forget his name.

  • This comment is for dramaticguy. The ghosts boss was called Mr Meaker, Harold Meaker.

  • Thanks, thats right, the actor popped in the orginal Dr.Who too.(Reign of Terror and The War Games)

  • tzetzeflysoup, the clocks were on Pipkins (I'm getting old lol)

  • Mr Claypole! Mr Claypole!

    Ahh, childhood memories ftw!

Anyone remember a show that used a clip of a series of clocks ticking and bonging and ringing when it was 'time for a story'? Been trying for years to remember this one...

  • I remember the show you are talking about but the title doesnt come to mind!

  • That was pipkins... with Hartley hare.

  • Wow, you must be a pipkins anorak lol. I reckon the very early eighties was the end for QUALITY kids telly.

  • @tzetzeflysoup

Yes!! I think it's PIPKINS!! Do you remember Hartley Hare and Octavia the Ostrich??

  • @tzetzeflysoup Sounds like Pipkins!

  • @tzetzeflysoup That'd be PIPKINS !!

  • Damn...I wanna go back!

    Is that possible?

    Fm

  • Well if you find out it is then take me with ya!

    Great memories!!!

  • Most of that cast are real ghosts by now i bet.

  • when i was a kid in nigeria

  • At this point it was a serious ghost programme, but then it became pure pantomime, just lost its edge completely...

  • How bizarre - just done a search on Wikipedia for michael staniforth (Timothy Claypole) and found he died in 1987 of 'an AIDS-related illness' - Also did the theme tune. Interesting factoid.

  • What a trip back to my childhood. Thanks warrenpeace66!

  • Old Skool Rentaghost - totally get my vote. This reminds me of my childhood.

    Thanks for this

  • Im having the theme tune to Rentaghost for my funeral, just for a laugh.

  • hahaha nice one!

  • Wot a cool idea.

  • And I'd just love it if they played stuff like this on Sky, i.e. at getting home from the pub time on a Fri/Sat night. Quality.

  • The UK is far too PC for great childrens TV like this anymore and we're all the poorer for it. Really happy memories listening to this tune. Thanks for uploading, would love to see series 1 on here too (anyone got it?). Thanks again!!

  • Glad you liked the posting of this classic song from when Tele was great! Got the first series sitting right here but having trouble with my converting program so will post as soon as it gets done! Cheers Warren

  • meekers?

    where?

  • personally i always liked the later episodes - they were far more crazy - in fact downright mental.

  • I always thought the bloke in the beard was Garry Bushell

  • Whale oil beef hooked! I saw this briefly when I was little. I was surprised to see Audrey from Coronation Street in it!

  • not sure which version of the song i prefer this one of the later one. the best bit of the other version is the

"coming just to spirit you away WWAAAHHYYYY" bit and i miss that on this version

  • cant help noticing that at the end if that clip it says "1975 bbc" rather than 1976

  • I think it was recorded in 1975 but first shown in January 1976. Cheers for the comments Warren

  • NICE MEMORIES

  • Anthony Jackson aka Fred Mumford died in November last year. :(

  • That's a shame about him dying; but I seem to recall he wasn't too happy about being technically dead in the series.

  • I was very sad to hear that Mr Claypole died of Aids :-(

  • Ahhh, memories of great tv before the days of teenage mutant turles.

  • Rentaghost: The Movie! How come it's just the yanks that get to recreate their cheesy TV shows of yore?

  • Discuss Rentaghost and other Kids TV at new forum;

    nostalgiakids (dot) co (dot) nr

  • i want rent a ghost back

  • Just been digging around about the cast... It seems these original lyrics had to be changed in the next series because the Beeb got worried about satanic output - big fuss about 'The Omen' at the time. Mr Davenport didn't choose to leave after the first series - he became a real ghost. Mr Mumford didn't want to carry on without him, so only Mr claypole was left. I never liked the Mcwitch & Miss Popov characters much... and as for that bloody panto horse!

  • Very interesting facts mate. Didn't know why Mr Mumford left! And changing the lyrics...P.C gone mad eh! I agree that only the first series was the "classic" Rentaghost, I regulaly watch it and it's still a good laugh :-)

  • Your comment about the Panto horse really made me laugh. Thanks for bringing back some great memories of simple entertaining childrens TV.

  • Its a top theme tune!

  • As far as I know, the Perkins are still alive although Jeffrey Segal is well into his 80s.

  • What a great programme!

  • it was really shit tv, absolute rubbish programme.

  • the streets were full of shitty haircuts.what a bunch of scruffy twerps everyone was back then

  • Amazing memories, loved this as a kid!

  • long live Timothy Claypole!

  • who said they are all dead except Chris Biggins? been watching coronation street lately? (sue nichols/ audrey roberts)

Anne Emery is also still alive as well so kindly get your facts right

  • Wow, children's programmes that didn't talk down to the kids. Words in the theme that an adult would understand by I wouldn't have watching it aged 4.

I loved Rentaghost, probarbly my favourite children's TV show ever, especially with Witch Hazel and Nadia Poppoff...

  • Strange to think Mr Claypole would join Rentaghost for real at such a young age! I Reckon he would have went on to be a big star.

  • Sad that they are all dead now except good old Chris Biggins.

  • Mr Davenport looks like Jon Pertwee in Dr Who.

The early episodes were ace but it was never so good after Davenport and Mumford left.

  • I agree series 1 is the best by far for me. In later episodes the cast was weak and the jokes were weary :-)

  • great memories

  • catchy tune

  • Want to also say a thankyou for posting this clip. Also want to agree to the first comment...real good times and memories. Now as an adult I appreciate the lyrics more than when I did as a kid.

    Well done.

  • Cheers Logan, It was one of THE classic shows of the 70's, I really think the theme tune was a great use of wordplay. Warren Peace

  • Good memories!

    Thanks for posting that clip.

  • No probs Zerafa, I'll be putting some classic clips from the first series on you tube very soon! Keep an eye for them. Cheers Warren
