@revman383 i believe you sir, Are correct...i remember when i was a kid watching the CP trains run out of revelstoke east thru rogers pass. In the winter months the first car after the units was ALWAYS an old beat up box car with a metal frame on it specifically for knocking the ice off of bridges and tunnels...
@kdlehel it definitely sounds different than classic emd, doesn't it? From UtahRails site: "UP 589 & 600 (SP 4826 & 4841) are GP38-2 1(980)." Could not confirm re-engine. Quote: "...UP 572, 580, 600, 602, 604, 606 are equipped for snow service on Donner Summit; ...are equipped with icicle breakers, wire screen protection for the cab windows, & spinning cab window inserts; for better braking control in severe weather, all six units also received Blomberg B trucks with dual-clasp brake rigging..."
Nice shots of the California Zephyr and the stack train after the flanger went by.

some serious effort getting that footage up there, and in heavy snow. well worth a watch.

It's hard to tell but at 3:33 that is probably about 5-6 feet of snow lol and that's not even deep in the Donner Pass.

thats how you renove ice and snow drifts----no sd70s or ac4400s here!!!! this job goes to the always reliable units--from the 1970's!!!!!!!!!!!!

@gmsd70mac I don't like AC4400s either but there's nothing wrong with the new "Tier II" units.
